I don’t care that you’re “the best journalism school in the country” you’re part of our school and shouldn’t be an enemy. There are plenty of other media outlets looking to tear down a football team, the bullets don’t need to come from within; from an organization that feeds from the university’s trough. I definitely wouldn’t want to see articles in the Tiger that tear down Dabo or the athletic department. The constitution says we can’t suppress your right to free speech or press, but it doesn’t say we have to subsidize it. Start your own paper, pay your own bills, then write whatever the hale you want; until that happens understand you’re part of our team.

…….but I disagree.
I want to hear the truth and I don’t care if it’s unpleasant, unsettling, unseemly or illegal. Just give me raw facts and don’t bother telling me what it means, I’ll decide that for myself. A - happened B - happened C- happened

They've gone 4-20 over the past two seasons.
I'd imagine the story was handed to them from somewhere within the administration.

year old dudes who have committed to a "prestigious" institution of higher learning - signing on for theoretically 4 years of membership on a team - and they get a scholarship to get a degree from this place - plus a CRAP TON of other perks - money, pampering we can only imagine, world-class training & facilities & nutrition & chicks & complete stardom with the royal treatment.
In order to maintain all this - you find out behind closed doors that you have to get nekkid and do all kinda demeaning stuff - as directed by the players that are leaders on the team who are supposedly appointed by the coaching staff to do these kinda things.
And what you are worried about is WHO broke the story & found out about all the garbage going on ?
Is that about right ?

No question the actions by the team were beyond unacceptable

But what did the student paper’s reporting do to stop it 5 years ago or prevent it from happening going forward. Nothing; all they did was get the coach fired. Did you read the articles? They didn’t just report the facts they shaped the conversation in way to maximize public outrage; especially the second article. The article that alleges a racists culture at NW, which included only one former player who was willing to go on record, came out the same day that Fitzgerald was fired. There is an adversarial relationship between the paper and the athletic department that has existed long before this incident. The paper is proud of it; I’ve heard a few alums in the media say as much in the last few days in interviews. It’s not fair and balanced; it’s a history of attempts at gotcha journalism from within their own family.

nothing about what happened in the past.
I GUARANTEE that them reporting it will have an impact on it occurring again. Definitely not saying it won't happen again - but it will be MUCH MORE difficult to pull off doing stupid things going forward.

Weeks has been laughable so I can understand a lack of confidence in their ability to prevent it in the future. However, I think they have actually implemented some changes that would do much more to deter the actions than any article about the past. Included in those actions they are hiring independent observers who do not report to the athletic department to monitor team activities .

That's bull. The entire purpose of the press is to report FACTS, no matter how embarrassing or damaging they may be. The press is so critical to our country that its right to exist is enshrined in the first amendment. It's a check and balance to institutions trying to hide something. If anything, Northwestern's student newspaper should be rewarded for exposing the ugly underbelly of their football program. It will only make their university better in the future.

Asking black athletes to cut off their dreadlocks...

Isn't racism.
3 players over 20+ years claim "racism" at NW.
Three.
We had at least that many say the same about Sweeney during the Covid lockdown.
5 female's majoring in journalism did what they know to do; sensationalize a story at all costs.

Calling someone out for not doing the right is what they should do. You sound like a Trump supporter that follows blindly and doesn't care as long as you win.

All those nerds at Northwestern hate “sportsball” and think all the athletic money should go to the science department anyways.
