The silence from Clemson on conference realignment makes its own statement.
Jul 16, 2022, 6:01 PM
|
|
It’s been a little over 2-weeks since USC and UCLA announced their departure to the B1G. One of the devil of the details on process was how the announcement itself was presented.
Both schools broke this news by PRing that their applications to the B1G had been accepted, and that was the first ANYONE heard about it. Texas/Oklahoma was managed in similar fashion albeit with an invitation acceptance announcement.
Since the USC/UCLA coup, the ACC has put forward a couple of tepid, trial balloon responses lacking details and cohesion, while the undisputed ACC conference leader has maintained total silence on these proposals.
Graham Neff’s most recent public statements predating the USC/UCLA announcement were made in May on ‘Packer and Durham’ in the wake of news that the B1G and SEC were about to renew their more lucrative TV deals.
Neff’s comments in this interview provide direct insight into the new AD’s thoughts on the status quo.
"Lot of momentum around, you know, now's the time, and what that looks like structurally for college athletics, for division one," Neff said.
“There just seems to be a whole lot of momentum around now, there needs to be change, for a lot of obvious reasons, and now's the time.
From an industry standpoint, or a Power-5 standpoint, you know, what does it look like. There's been a lot of options and discussions and there's still a lot of questions to be answered. But I think if there's one thing that has a lot of coalescence around not only our league, but the industry is now is the time. Now's the window to effect change." -Graham Neff, 5/13/2022
When contrasted against Jim Phillip’s “loose relationship” proposal, Neff seems to articulate a bolder vision that transcends merely rearranging the conference deck chairs.
It’s also not unreasonable to think Clemson had already begun exploring options before the B1G expansion news even dropped, and when/if that news hits, it’ll hit like a ton of bricks, not via a series of water drop torture, rumor tweets. We’ll all just wake up one morning as new SEC(or less likely B1G) members in waiting.
And for now, total silence. Silence from Neff, Dabo, and the BOT.
…and the silence speaks volumes.

Do not disagree

Certainly Clemson has nothing to report at this time. ESPN, the ACC GOR, the SEC, and less likely the B1G and Fox Sports are all gears in the machine. Without Clemson leadership's resolve to achieve a $100M per annum football payday and ESPN's support for Clemson leaving the ACC, nothing happens. Only ESPN can unlock the GOR door by contractually facilitating a Clemson's ACC exit criteria and SEC entry criteria. This has to be in ESPN's and the SEC's best interests.
When the ESPN-hired actuaries extrapolate Clemson's ACC/bowl/playoff ratings, IMO they will establish Clemson's ACC ratings will significantly increase vs. LSU, Bama, Texas, Oklahoma, Tx A&M, UGA, Florida, Ole Miss, Auburn, Tennessee, even usc jr. Clemson will draw views, clicks, and $$$ both regionally and nationally. B1G entry is less likely IMO because ESPN controls the ACC GOR exit criteria. Good post ddraines® ...

Thanks, and agreed. I’m really curious how far down the road Clemson may already be in this process. With Neff calling out now being the time to act and the reality of there only being so many seats at the super conference tables, It’s raises doubt for me that Clemson will wait for very long.

there is nothing to say at this point. During Media Days you’ll hear how great the ACC is, what else can they say? Calls, negotiations and “what ifs” between teams and other conferences will be mum. It will be handled similar to USC and UCLA to the Big - nothing until there is something.

Dabo Swinney after Oklahoma/TX join SEC:
“I would say you will hear a lot of conversation over the next five to seven years. I would imagine there will be some type of restructuring in college football over the next decade. I don’t have any intel, that is just my gut instinct, but we will see.”

If anything, I feel like the powers that be here have had their eyes wide open all along and are keeping up with the game at hand. Dabo's comments from April about 40-50 team top tier possibilities that raised such a clatter - lo and behold, here it is a coming.
We'll have some explaining to do regardless next week for ACC Media Days. No way to avoid commenting around it with all the questions that will be going around. I imagine the party line will be what a great league and what great recent history many of the teams have had and how we're looking forward to taking on the ACC's best this coming season in our quest to regain the ACC championship.

I’m going to be tuned into that too Lou.
It’ll be interesting to see if a well rehearsed, this season focused message comes out or some kind of endorsement of the conference and it’s leadership.
I’m betting, tight focused message like you describe.

In Dabo’s first media days Q&A I heard ringing endorsements from Dabo on OUR university leadership, “beyond my pay grade” on expansion, and no endorsement whatsoever of the ACC/proposals/leadership.

What would you expect Clemson to say?
Until they are ready to say, "We have formally applied for membership in the SEC" they should say nothing.

they could simply say so. The fact that they haven't, or won't, is a pretty strong indication they are considering such a move. That's the point. I agree with you though, as long as they are considering it, we will hear nothing until a decision is made one way or the other.

Iah this has nothing to do with Clemson…nor their preferences…it is all controlled by ESPN, fox, nbc, apple…the media has control now and Clemson will end up where the media wants them!!! It’s really that simple and has been for a while now!!!

For you TNetters with children, were you more concerned about the times when the kids were loud, playing and/or going at each other (as my Dad would say, grab a$$ing) or when things got so quiet that it was suspicious? Usually quiet meant something was up.

But I didnt see any Syracuse rep saying any more or less than we have. It's not unlike the hundreds of these articles.being written by folks like this beat writer.
I just don't see the whole "silence means something must be happening" angle. I'm sure our coach and admin are well aware of a changing landscape, but I just see an imminent move to any other conference. The ACC will remain as-is for awhile. We need to relax and realize we can win national championships just as easy tomorrow or any year just as we have.

The ACC had floated two proposals for a loose relationship, and the leader of the conference has been completely silent on these. No ringing endorsement, no criticism, nothing.
I agree with Lou in that it’ll be interesting how Dabo, Neff, and other team leaders in the conference respond to questions this week during media days.

Correct! Sometimes it’s not what is best for everybody else. It what Clemson thinks is best for Clemson.

SI recently completed a study of this. Clemson ranks 16th on the list of most desirable P5 programs.
Outside of teams that are already in the B1G or SEC only Notre Dame and Washington(barely)ranks higher.

Don’t worry. The annual chicken beatings will continue unabated regardless of our conference.
