I lived in Johnstone A-609 my freshman year 1976. Great thing about that room is it faced towards Tillman (Old Main) and was ground level. Many a time I just went in and out my window so I didn't worry about keeping up with keys! Bad thing was on Thursday thru Saturday nights we would get a lot of intoxicated people walking down our hallway headed to the Loggia or B and C section who would inevitably scream and bang on our walls. Dang......I miss those days!!!!

D3. What a location. My roommate and I almost exclusively used the window for a door. D3 was in the perfect location to get on and off the ledges. During the winter we made those hot air balloons out of the clear plastic laundry bags, drinking straws and candles. Usually the night before the game. Called them UFOs.

D3 was definitely the best. Window access saved time, miles, and numerous flights of stairs daily. Mine aligned directly with the sidewalk in front of the shoeboxes. Back when they were coed only, it afforded the perfect spot to observe, rank, and harass the ladies as they came and went. The view of that little hill in front, covered in blankets on a warm spring day, was particularly inspiring. ??

...did anybody here ever stay in that suite of 8 rooms on top of the right end of Section D? I'm curious as to if they were popular, with people holding onto them their whole college stay, or if you couldn't wait to change rooms. I would guess that they were popular. I wish that I had seen them before their demolition. I have asked several of my friends who went to Clemson when I did in the early 80's about them, and none of us ever noticed them.

That suite of 8 rooms was actually C-7. I lived in C731 right beside bricks facing Calhoun Mansion and Shoeboxes from 1975-1978. It was like our little penthouse. We had some very memorable parties that lasted all weekend. Hanging out on the ledge and “barking” at the babes was a fun past time. A lot of guys on that side of Johnstone would join in. It sounded like 50 different breeds of dogs barking all at once(hilarious).

I concur. Those top rooms in the color photo were C-7. I lived in C-730 on the courtyard side of the hall, right next to the stairwell for two years (1987/1988). Our room was one foot wider than all the other rooms for some reason, probably the stairwell. There was a door at the end of the hall that I never saw opened, but that didn't keep us from crawling out an end room window and going out onto the roof.

on T-Net remembering their room numbers.
In the top photo I lived on the top floor in the upper right dorm; my junior year about midways; my senior year in the far right room, as a Hall Supervisor. Both were perfect as they were a short walk to "The Tiger" newspaper offices over the loggia, and I was already used to running up and down stairs, as I lived on top floors all four years. lol.

it was the far right, top floor in that dorm, which was a single room looking down toward the Calhoun Mansion.
Don't know why, but I had the room to myself my senior year. I lived about halfway down the same hall during my junior year, again in a room facing the Mansion. Had a super-great roommate from Chester who has been a successful Architect in Charleston. When I'd put on my cheerleading uniform before a game, he'd go into the hall yelling which always brought out the crowds yelling and cheering. Oddly enough, he dated and married the sister of an old buddy from my Rock Hill High School days. Wonderful people and times!

It did a 90 degree jog to the left towards Harcombe, and then another 90 degree jog to the right towards, and butting up to, B Section. See attached Black and White photo. Were you there in the early 80's? I had several friends who lived on B-8. One mentioned a cheerleader who lived in B Section.

I spent three years in room C-820 and looked out over the Calhoun Mansion - joked about the lousy neighborhood. That was a great room, minus the cockroaches. Had two rifle racks and a sink in our room.

Pretty sure I was C-809, class of '86. Faced Fort Hill and loved the sunny winter days! We had a kid down the hall who was schizophrenic and would slide along the wall, down the corridor in his underwear, mumbling about the sharks in the middle of the corridor. He was John Stamey's roommate one year (or maybe only a semester).

The shower was the perfect size to set the RA's entire room up exactly as it was in his real room. LMAO. I was in D322 and D310. I too had the view of the shoeboxes out of my 322 window. And ground level on the ledge with a ditch to jump over for the rooms on D2. Couldn't have paid me to live down there.

When I arrived in August 1965, the tin cans weren't air-conditioned, so my roommate and I pooled five dollars to buy a small, oscellating fan from Judge Keller's. The darn thing only blew hot air around, so I took it back, told the Judge's son about it and asked if I could work out a deal on one of his large breezebox fans. He let me trade it in with the agreement that we would pay the ten dollars difference within two months...which we did. It was loud, but did the trick, as many of our hallmates would drop by to "cool off." I LMAO every time I think about it....

I was in johnstone E 514 back in 1985. About the ledges. I think I’m correct in saying Johnstone was prefabricated. The ledges are where the slabs for each floor overhang. They were lifted into place already formed.

E-516 here, but a decade before you.
I remember seeing a book in the library about Johnstone's construction: that each cement slab of a floor was poured, then jacked up and the rooms constructed between the slabs. Now that I write that, it's hard to envision. I know that it was supposed to be some sort of construction marvel, but can anyone else explain how Johnstone was built? (I also remember that when it was completed, it was the second largest dorm in the country, behind only a dorm at the Naval Academy.)

The giant nuts were welded to the rebar in the slabs. The Screws were attached to a hydraulic motor that turned the screws and slowly lifted the cured slab. Then the next slab was poured the same way. Braces added and the walls were built out. Extensions were added to the screws to add additional floors. The screws became the permanent columns and they were sealed in the walls around the bathrooms, stairwells, storage rooms, etc...
Innovative technique developed post WW2 to use more steel since the quit building ships. Supposedly one of two buildings made with this technique, and the other one fell during construction. Crappy building, but it was home and we loved it!
The married housing used to be metal quonset huts built post WW2. Practical but bad as well. They should have preserved on section of Johnstone and one hut, but the administration wanted to get rid of them! Somebody should post a picture of the huts.

They were supposed to be temporary for a few years but wound up lasting a long time. They also weren't air-conditioned for a number of years...something about which I can attest.

I loved our ledge overlooking the Calhoun House and the band marching below on the way to games at Death Valley. We thought of it as a balcony - even would lay down in the sun like a snake sometimes. Then they welded those dang clips on there and we burned up until the AC was turned on! I recall it being 85 degrees on the loft in our room at night. Miserable until the Physical Plant switched from heat to cooling.

Just remembered another funny thing we did in Johnstone. When we came back from Harcombe dining hall we entered at C5 near the restrooms. Someone would always have to go after a meal but they would run back out if someone was on the throne. We would all run up the stairs to C8 and flush all the toilets at once causing the C5 toilets to overflow like geysers. I can still hear the screaming and cursing from C5 today!!! Lol

Pretty sure it was Tulane. As to the ledges at Johnstone favorite memory was during Streak Week in Spring '74. The focal points were the amphitheater and the "top of the hill" street between Johnstone and Calhoun mansion. There were gangs of streakers, 10 or 15, who finally merged on the Thursday night prior to spring break and were jogging around campus. Had to be hundreds of guys and some girls. Cops were letting it go as long you stayed on campus. There was a gauntlet of clothed folks through which the streakers would jog. Made several laps around the Calhoun Mansion Square. Clemson Police would occasionally cruise through the tunnel of humans and once the streakers came jogging up behind the police cruiser and climbed up the trunk, ran over the top and jumped off the front as the rows of spectators closed ranks preventing any pursuit. Amidst all of this a pudgy, long haired (as we all were) Johnstonian climbed out on his ledge (buck naked of course) with his electric guitar and serenaded the mob. He was no John Holmes but comfortable in his own skin. The streaking never really returned to anything like that week. It was my freshman year.

We were all on the hill near Calhoun Mansion when someone would suddenly come out of the bushes "streaking"...Mostly guys. Suddenly a girl comes out of the hedges butt nekked flying downhill towards the shoeboxes. She got a little ahead of herself, lost control, and landed Ta Ta's first sliding across the sidewalk. She got up screaming and ran into the dorm. The crowd went WILD!!

I lived on Johnstone B-8 in the Fall of '81 and our room over looked Fort Hill. I think that Pinto that caught fire happened the Fall of '81. It was late on a quiet night. Maybe a Sunday night. The driver was raising hell yelling out the window and blowing the horn as they went up and down Fort Hill St.
There were ATMs there on the Johnstone side of the road near the walkthrough portal between B and C sections. It looked like the driver pulled up near the ATMs and had 1 or 2 bales of hay in the back with the rear hatch open.
We were trying to sleep and I remember being glad that they quit with all the noise. Next thing we knew the hay in the Pinto caught fire and the car went up. It was crazy.

About the lack of air conditioning, most of us grew up in un-air conditioned homes, went to un-air conditioned high schools, and drove un-air conditioned cars so the heat was tolerable. Soph year on B9 facing west was the worstest.
