ESPN analyst says Tigers have an argument for best team in history

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney says there’s no doubt that his 2018 National Champions are the best ever, and one ESPN college football analyst says Swinney has an argument. Full Story »

to call that team the "best ever", but since it's Clemson, we're just "up there" with some of the best.

15-0. Sorry ESecPN, but winning is just what we do.

I agree that ESPN is generally atrocious, but in my opinion Reece Davis is and always has been level-headed and cool--toward Clemson and toward every program (even though he happens to be a Bama grad).

I'm good with Reece, Herbie and Pollack. Then there's Brock Huard, who just LOVES Clemson.

ESPN had no choice in the matter.

They were calling Bama the best team ever and when Clemson put the beat down on them. What else could they say?

great point, talking about how they just weren't typical Alabama but Alabama on steroids...and then got whooped, what else can you say at this point. Finebaum must be loving all this

Did you catch his show on the SEC network the day after? It was priceless.

Exactly. Rece and the ESecPN reach around gang

would be foaming at the mouth with accolades towards "the greatest team ever".

They are all like a bunch of cats hacking up a fur ball. ESPN just can't hack it up and say Clemson is the best ever.

Until another team goes 15-0 in the modern era.

Until another team punks two undefeated teams to the tune of 74-19.

Until another team has a defense like ours or an offense like ours or has as many 20+ point victories as ours.

Until another team beats as many undefeated opponents as we did in a season.

Until another senior class posts as many wins, conference championships, and natties as ours has.

THERE IS NO ARGUMENT.

First 15-0 major college program in over 100 years. Saban has 6 championships and they were saying this was his best team ever...along with best offense and best QB ever. Just unfortunately for them the Tigers came along and took them to the woodshed.

I was wondering how we were gonna recover after losing DW4, Mike Williams, Jordan Leggett, and others 2 years ago...and then look what happened.

So, none of you guys would consider my Texas Longhorns of 2005 as one of the best ever? ESPN was pimping USC all year long and we went to the Rose Bowl and came from behind much like Clemson did a couple of years ago with Watson.
Watson said he was thinking about Vince Young when he led the Tigers down the field for the win. It was eerily similar.

This team didn't need a last minute come from behind win

Because it was a blowout from the start against the consensus favorite.

That's true. They blew them out from almost the beginning. Good point.

I liked what Penn St did that year (shenanigans at Michigan, major homer clockwork prevented PSU from being undefeated). Thought the National Championship should have been them and Texas.

Robinson vs Young

Penn St's D was nasty, too. Penn St vs FSU was brutal ball that bowl season. One of those underperforming FSU teams that had talent and brought it for the "All-Time Winningest Coach Bowl".

Who Cares?

2018 Clemson is certainly among the best Champions ever since they A) Finished 15-0 and B) had to beat an undefeated Notre Dame and an undefeated Alabama in a playoff and beat both of them by 4 TDs.

Alabama, Miami, USC, Texas, Nebraska, etc. all had great teams in the past that were great Champions. And, some of those teams would have certainly won 15 games if they had played 15 games.

The thing that matters is that this team will always be in the conversation of "greatest ever", even though there it's impossible to have a definitive answer to that question.

And the biggest deal here is that we kicked the dog $hit out of Alabama when everyone in the nation was thinking we were about to get blown out. We violated them in adult ways on national television. Children saw that. It will be a very long time before the memory of that domination fades.

Dabo is a like an elephant, you know, the animal who never forgets? He's sick of ESPiN pushing Bama as the best. He made that clear with the 'ROY bus,' statements poking at Stephen A.

He shoved 'lugubrious,' up the CBS sports crew's butt with a red hot poker. Dabo shoved Stephen A ranking Alabama as #5, #4, #3 #2 #1 and then everybody else up Stephen A's butt with a telephone pole.

Dabo is sick and tired of all his work, his accomplishments, his football team and the program he's built being disrespected and always the underdog even after 7 ten win seasons, all the ACCC titles, appearing in the playoff all four year and previously winning National Championship then being disrespected by Alabama being favored a week after we beat them.

That was not Dabo claiming to be the best ever it was about beating the team that ESPiN has claimed to be the best ever for nearly a decade by using their own rhetoric against them. Now one of the idiots who said Bama was the best ever year after year is claiming that USC had a team which was really the best ever. Those guys don't know whether to chit or go blind when dealing with someone who is as intelligent as they claim to be.

Anyone who can't see that just isn't keeping up.

The key point is that, if Alabama had shellacked Clemson, they would have been considered - hands-down - the greatest team in history. So ... ?

The people who bring up the teams from 1897 and "voted" NC

[2]
Posted: Jan 17, 2019, 9:49 PM

. . . . just need to stop! The biggest player on the OL would have been maybe 240! Assuming there was a play for the teams to play; CU or most modern football teams would absolutely crush those teams! But, people don't like "challenging historical data"! I won't here; just saying - in no way shape or form though would they. LOL!

You bring up Nebraska or the Canes back in the day! I submit to you this: "they had better know about HUNH offenses" LOL! BV would not with a size advantage on those Nebraska teams on the line of scrimmage; just allow them to run the football. Again, I know people who saw them play in the day can't see it because they were so dominant; but the reason nobody runs that offense is b/c folks learned how to stop it. Speed became prevalent over big and bulky ( remember those over-sized shoulder pads)? If it would still bring National Championships they would still be running it; believe that if you don't believe anything else. Remember, hypothetically speaking, all this is! < - - - - yoda-ism The canes in my opinion were just like the Spurrier Gator teams - ahead of the curve regarding either recruiting or offense. Miami was one of the 1st taking the best athlete on a H.S. team and converting them to a position of need. They emphasized speed and b/c of this strategy; and the fertile recruiting grounds of Miami (pre-everybody raiding S. Florida) they spanked everyone. But, I didn't see their offense as particularly explosive. I thought Nebraska's I-formation option was more potent. Spurrier and the fun and gun was running the spread when other folks were running veer and option based offenses. His offense "spawned" variations of the spread including Art Briles unique spin on it.

So assuming those exact teams played our team this year! Go look at the 40 times top to bottom and compare them. Look at the size/speed combination and compare them. I don't see any team that could be ahead of Clemson 2018 with a physical advantage, period.

Scheme - see above.

In short, heck yeah! 2018 Tigers have to be in the conversation b/c no other FBS squad has ever been 15-0 that had to win a NC "on the field"! Not voted on in an opinion poll. BTW, where was most of the sportswriters located back in the day? Not in the deep south!

I'm big into history, and nothing *at all* against 1897 Penn, but saying they were the "best ever" is like saying William Renshaw could have beaten Pete Sampras in tennis.

(Google William Renshaw.)

Funny how they didn't question bama's greatness

After UGA nearly beat them. The only narrative then was how great UGA was for playing mighty Bama so close. Clemson destroys Bama and then it's "but.. but bama's defense was never really that good, we just, uh, didn't get around to talking bout it till now..."

You can definitely argue that this Clemson team was one of the best ever...They had a great group of young men who were talented and "all in"...This team had impressive starters & functional depth at seemingly every position. This was also a veteran group that had had returned a ton of experience from the prior season... For Lawrence and Ross to step into such pivotal roles as true freshman is all the more remarkable considering how much experience returned.
Alabama was considered one of the greatest teams of all time, and with good reason, as they beat everyone they faced by over 20 points, and with Tua the offense reached incredible heights to go along with their typical stifling defense. Clemson just made more critical plays throughout the entire contest, and over the course of the game, as play after play was tallied, it became crystal clear that the Tigers were the dominant team on the field. It was amazing to see Alabama punting from around the 45yd line with just over 10 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. For such a formidable Alabama team to basically cry uncle with 10 minutes to go tells you all you need to know.
BTW, that 2004 USC team was awesome, but they were a bit over-hyped with the whole Hollywood/Heisman winner vibe imo & considering they had 5 pretty close games, and the Oklahoma team they beat for the title also had 5 games that were highly contested as well.

I don't know what you all are complaining about. He had us in the top 50 of all time if you don't count the five times he mentioned 2004 USC. We were only behind or even with:

2009 and 2011 Alabama
Texas team that Mack had that won the championship
2004 USC
2001 Miami
80s and 90s Hurricane or Nebraska teams (little known fact... BOTH teams were consensus national champions for two straight decades)

link

We would destroy the 2004 USC team. But, since those guys
