Since Alabama is "One of the Greatest Football Teams Ever"

Since everyone is saying this about Alabama, would it be reasonable if, for example, Clemson just happened to close the season 12-0, then win the ACC Championship game against Pitt, then defeat a Top 4 team, perhaps Michigan or Notre Dame, in the CFP Semifinals, and then defeat Alabama in the CFP Finals to become the first-ever undefeated CFP National Champion ... would it be reasonable in that situation to say that the 2018-2019 Clemson Tigers are the greatest college football team in history?

Well they would stuffer and hem and haw and say. Bama had a bad game and insert the C word . Then they would say the stars aligned and we welucky and the officials helped us.... well, you get the picture, so probably not. Meanwhile, we just smile and cheer on the Tigers with SEC type players. Dabo said he wanted to have a program everyone else wanted to be like and I believe he is on the way to doing that!

When we beat them the excuse will be Tua wasn’t 100% and neither was Hurts. Both of which are true statements, but the ‘best team in history’ should overcome that.

They said the same thing in 2016. Bama went into the NC game undefeated and with SECHeat Player of the year. the Deshaun and our Tigers showed them that they could be beat. Our guys were more physical than they were. Last year Bama was more physical any KB couldn't handle that. The Defense held their own but with as many short fields Bama had it wasn't hard for them to win. Our guys have worked since January to show everyone that they can be just a physical and I look forward to the clash of the Titans. of after the BC game this weekend and a few more along the path that will allow TL to understand our offense and opposing defenses even better. Go Tigers.

the one time we would beat them out of ten times if we played them again, etc, etc. There cannot be a narrative where any team not in the SEC gets referred to as the greatest ever. Sorry to insert a dose of cynical reality, but hey, this is ESPN, and their flapping sail with the Dumbo ears, Paul Finebaum we are dealing with here.

The fewest points Clemson has scored all year: 27.
The most points a Clemson opponent has scored all year: 26.
(I doubt that will continue to hold, even in a 15-0 season, but if it did, it would be a statistic to be remembered until the end of time.)

to compare teams from other eras, imo. Most importantly, ESPiN has been claiming that Bama is Saban's best team ever year after year. That's nonsense. Competition changes year to year due to graduations and even schedules.
Number mean little in evaluations between teams which have zero common opponents, less in different years and so much more less when schemes change as the cycle between pounding the ball and spreading the field happens.
We have the NC team this year. It's not necessary to proclaim they are any more or less than what they are after that.

I've thought about this quite a bit.
As unfair as this might sound, history might look back and judge 2018-2019 Clemson based on how people like Trevor Lawrence do in the NFL.
For example, if Lawrence turns out to be an NFL MVP, Hall of Famer, etc., there may be a reminiscence about the 2018-2019 team that wouldn't be there if he got injured.
So, even though it's exceedingly tempting to say "Greatest Ever!" right now, reality says that we may not know for another 10-15 years. This is, of course, based on the attitudes of the general public, and not of Clemson fans in-the-know, but general acceptance is what's going to dictate this.
It's superficial and not based in reality, but that's how fame seems to work.

Surely Alabama are still the greatest ...... Only one loss, and a good loss at that, against an undefeated team ...... That can only improve Alabama's standing in the Polls.
