Report from on the ground at Amelia Island.

13

May 15, 2023, 10:28 PM

This is a report from an FSU web journalist who is at Amelia Island at the hotel. He is a respected journalist (used to be sports editor for the Tallahassee newspaper). He's not just a click bait blogger.

Interesting observations from his perspective. I'll give you two quick tidbits and then you can watch the entire thing.

1. Sure sounds like something is up. It was anything but "business as usual" this afternoon.
2. Speculation at the site of the conference is ND is the 8th team.

I keep seeing ND mentioned as the 8th but help me understand why that makes sense? They become homeless if there’s a breakup, right? The only conference left to take them in all sports but football is the Big12. SEC surely isn’t giving them that option. I can’t see the B1G doing it either. What would be ND’s motivation for breaking up the conference?

With 12 team playoff they will always get in playoffs

Sure, but they have 12 other sports who need teams to play. Football stands own it’s own but Men’s basketball needs a conference.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

depends on who will play them in the future

to give them enough power rankings by the selection committee. If the B1G/SEC and schools like Clemson, FSu etc refuse to play them.... the service academies, stanford, etc aren't gonna build that resume. interesting times indeed.

B1G full member

They’ve always been a B1G school at their core. They won’t be able to put a proper schedule together as an independent that could be arguably tough enough and simultaneously easy enough for a 12-team playoff. Cant play Navy and BYU with 2 big games a year and seem competitive with their penchant for crumbling in the big bowl games.

Re: B1G full member

I think that could make sense. They can’t be a top 4 seed without a conference so maybe they’re finally seeing the end is near as an independent. Surely that B1G contract only gets B1gger with them as a full member.

They unquestionably add value

May 15, 2023, 11:09 PM

I don’t think it’s as much as they think but it’s probably more than any other team that would be going through “free agency”.

UNC might be next closest due to their national brand and illicit sustained success.

Southeastern my question is

May 15, 2023, 11:08 PM [ in reply to Re: Report from on the ground at Amelia Island. ]

Does ND even have a vote? Since they are not a member in football, and football is driving the boat, does ND even have a vote?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Southeastern my question is

May 15, 2023, 11:21 PM

They are a full voting member. If they end up being the 8th vote, then we’ll all thank Swofford. Otherwise, I’m not sure what sense it makes to have them as a full voting member!!

Re: Southeastern my question is

May 16, 2023, 9:42 AM

Ni, they are not a full voting member. That's simply incorrect. People keep saying that, but without actual evidence.

Re: Southeastern my question is

May 17, 2023, 11:01 PM

Here is some evidence sort of ….

There is no language in the ACC’s bylaws and constitution covering dissolution of the conference, other than a standard boilerplate clause about the distribution of property. The North Carolina law governing the dissolution of nonprofits would theoretically apply, requiring only a majority of voting members to agree to it. (Notre Dame, for some reason, gets a full vote and not 20 percent of a vote, even though it only gets a one-fifth share of revenue. That has never been sufficiently explained.)

I believe the only major reason ND would want out of the contract is that it gives them the ability to join the Big 10. The ACC GOR prohibits Notre Dame from joining any conference but the ACC should they decide against being independent in foitball. I just read an article that said Notre Dame would sacrifice at least 25 million/year by not joining the Big, even with a much better contract with NBC than the current one. If it the millions were in the single digits they probably wouldn't care but this amount of money seems to much for them to leave on the table.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because it makes perfect sense.

May 16, 2023, 10:03 AM [ in reply to Re: Report from on the ground at Amelia Island. ]

I predicted SEC or BIG two weeks ago, I thought it was the SEShe. The BiG is even better especially when the top all-time team in America is joining with you. The SEShe is trash.

Any other questions?

ND and FSU. That leaves FSU on an island. Hopefully FSU will lobby for some southern “company”. Clemson and GT would work nicely. Clemson, GT, UNC, and UVA works too!

Of the 8 schools, ND is the most coveted by other conferences. They don't have to worry about a new home.

Seems counter-intuitive considering this entire thing is about football.
