He didn't know how far he needed to go to win the game? How about to the endzone... He was only 3 yards away!

Our defensive players started jumping up and down celebrating as soon as he went out of bounds. If our defensive players know where the marker is, why doesn't his offensive players know.

Not to mention 99% of the fans knew he was short we he went out of bounds

Not impressed with this coach at all. Making excuses for a player who should have known what he needed to do. His comments make that player look like an idiot.

Bottom line....our guy had him where he wanted him.

Suzi, you definitely nailed this one. Petrino isn't just a sore loser, he is just a loser when that's the example he sets for his team. I will say, however, that I was impressed with their fans. All the ones I met were very respectful and complimentary.

Re: sore loser much?

Oct 11, 2016, 8:41 PM

Well made point. Maybe our players are just smarter. (On that I would bet!)

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So, do we need to make the Louisville goal line

Oct 11, 2016, 3:44 PM [ in reply to sore loser much? ]

a different color so the receiver won't accidently run to the Clemson endzone? Or maybe have Louisville players lining the sideline to motion him which way to run? He didn't know where the endzone was because a sideline marker (that isn't even required) wasn't where he wanted it?

Every time I think I've "heard it all" this crowd of cry-baby losers comes up with another one. They need to focus on the fact that they have 6 games in front of them, and forget about the 6 behind them that they can't do anything about. Heck, they have their final game with a top ten opponent... oh, wait... Houston lost, so scratch that.

It's one thing for the fans to gripe, but the coach needs to be a little more focused on the football game to be played... oh, wait... it's Petrino.

Go Tigers!

Agree, and of course its not the players fault, its the Clemson chain gang...GTHO....Same thing as last year, it only rained when ND had the ball and that's why they lost too, right....I

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: sore loser much?

Oct 12, 2016, 2:43 AM

Well, you know that it had to be very hard on ND to play in a downpour such as it was. Clemson on the other hand was fortunate to have clear cloudless sky's when they had the ball. Only an idiot couldn't see that ND was at a horrible disadvantage playing in a monsoon that they had to play in compared to the warm clear night as Clemson was lucky enough to play in. Just think of what the outcome would have been if Clemson would've had to play in the same condition as ND did!!!

Re: sore loser much?

Oct 12, 2016, 8:55 PM [ in reply to Re: sore loser much? ]

The weather wasn't ND's nemesis, it was Clemson's O and D all night. We took our foot off the gas 2 times to run clock and let them back in the game, rather than keeping on running our Offense that ND couldn't contain at all. I hate it when we let up and let the other team close the gap. I hope we learned a lesson from that. The same thing happened at Auburn when we played them down there a few years ago, only Auburn cought up and passed us. I hope we have learned to keep the pedal to the metal.

If he didn't know where to go, instead of making excuses

Oct 11, 2016, 1:46 PM

all Petrino needs to do is look in the mirror for the reason. Coming out of a timeout and false start penalty, if you as a coach, did not make 100% sure everyone knows where the line to gain is, then you have failed as a coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IF Quick had some wiggle room to make 1st down

Oct 11, 2016, 1:49 PM

Then why in the hail didn't he go for it just to be sure?!

Edmonds says HellO, that's why..and thus the marker wasn't at fault.

Losers!

You have a really good point

Oct 11, 2016, 3:51 PM [ in reply to IF Quick had some wiggle room to make 1st down ]

Quick caught the ball, turned and headed upfield, and Edmond hit him... he never had time to look for a sideline marker. Catch, turn, BAM... game over.

And for Petrino to say he "wasn't sure Quick knew where the goal line was" is the epitome of STUPID... and as Ron White says, there's no cure for stupid.

Go Tigers... whup the Wuffies!

How about the coach making sure he knows where the first

That's the yard marker that's ONE....TWO....hashmarks away from that big red pylon in the endzone. Not that difficult. That hashmark didn't move at all - it's painted on the grass. Not the 28, not the 17.....the TWO.

Re: If Quick really didn't know how far to go.....

Oct 11, 2016, 3:02 PM

100% correct. All coaching - especially if he's saying, he's not sure his player knew where the first down marker was. Maybe you cover that next time Bobby.

This is a perfect window into the kind of coach scumbag Bobby is - use the kids purely for your own benefit, take no accountability for your own job as a head coach. Bobby P cares about Bobby P - that is who he is.

Like Bryan Kelly, Jim Harbaugh, Jimbo Fisher and others. Many days I am grateful we have a head coach who is a good person and genuinely cares about his players. This is a good reminder of that.

I mean, clearly the crew knew exactly what the play call was going to be, where on the field it would occur, that it would result in a determination of inches near that sideline, and so they successfully pinpointed the strategic point where the sabotage would be necessary, and implemented it flawlessly. The only question is which illuminati power players were behind it. I mean c'mon come on, guys - lay off Patrino, he's only being reasonable, no?

No! He's being a cry baby and he's setting a poor example for his players. Other than that (an some infidelity issues) he's a pretty good coach who has taken a program of underachievement and elevated it to one that has some degree of accomplishment.

Oct 11, 2016, 2:16 PM

Being too far away from the field more than a week after the game is a coach we can handle. He should be yelling at his players to focus on the next game, not wallowing himself.

Although that is hilarious. Imagine getting beat during your great season, stewing on it for a week while everyone says you're still in it for the playoffs, then stewing on it for another week because you had a bye week but STILL lost ground on the playoffs because of a Group of Five team in Texas. :-D

Oct 11, 2016, 3:19 PM

Did Quick say that he couldn't see the marker? (Seems like it would loom large a normal person's field of vision.) If Quick didn't make this claim then it's silly for anyone else to make the claim.

If Quick didn't see the marker, then why did he act like he made the 1st down?

If Quick didn't see the marker (or even if he did), then why wouldn't Quick try to score a TD or at least gain as much yardage as possible so that his team could have more easily scored a TD with only a few seconds remaining?

How long has that kid been playing football, and he can't estimate where the goal line is with out finding the marker?
Not to mention the fact that he def was pushed out of bounds, he didn't make a choice to step out.

Petrino stated that he thought his receiver James Quick migh

Oct 11, 2016, 3:27 PM

have not known how far to go to the end zone. Dude, how far it is to the end zone does not depend on a yard marker. The end zone strats at the goal line, always has, always will. If he had no idea how far to go for a first down, that is on you as a coach. Make sure everyone knows the yard to make for a first down.

Definitely don't like posting on rival forums, but it's never fun to take things out of context. Clemson fans should know better.

He was directly asked near the end of the 15 minute press conference, what did you think about the down markers being placed in Clemson game? And he answered that it should be consistent for both teams. He never used it as an excuse for losing the game.

There was a previous different question being asked that whether James Quick quit on the play. He defended his player in saying that it wasn't an effort thing, but it was more of a slight confusion on his part where the down marker was located. He even said, anyone who blames Quick on the play doesn't know the difference between winning/losing in the game. Again, there was no mention of an excuse on why we lost.

The only thing he said resembling close to an excuse was that we as a team weren't focused in the first half. The first half lost them the game. I don't think anyone can argue that point.

For a coach that has been given significant praise to Clemson team and fan base in the past, you guys are awfully bitter towards him. He's made mistakes, and he isn't perfect. However, he doesn't deserve the hate being thrown at him.

Re: FB Update: Petrino still salty about ground marker at Clemson game

Oct 11, 2016, 4:05 PM

I'll be the one to discuss.

Did he or did he not say he "doesn't think Quick knew where he needed to go?" Is he not in this very interview blaming the marker position, instead of blaming the real issues 1) his lack of coaching them properly during his time out to know they needed to get to the 21 yd line for the 1st down and 2) Quick's lack of understanding a play that starts at the 12 has to go to the 2 to get a first down? Those are the reasons, not an unofficial marker on the home team's side. The official markers are always on the visitor's side....the one Bobby was standing on. In the end, the marker position honestly would only be a reason to question IF it had been on the wrong yard mark, but it was indeed lined up with the 2, the same as on the other side of the field. The defender hit his leg and knocked him out of bounds, he didn't run out untouched and he made the decision to go that way...end of story

Oct 11, 2016, 4:56 PM [ in reply to Re: FB Update: Petrino still salty about ground marker at Clemson game ]

Thanks for the level-headed response and perspective.

The game wasn't won or lost on that one play. Yes, Quick should have cut inside and used his weight advantage. If Clemson had one fewer turnover the game doesn't even come down to this play.

It was an epic game and Louisville is a great team. Hopefully both teams make the playoff.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You probably have a point but it is tough to know for sure

Oct 11, 2016, 5:12 PM [ in reply to Re: FB Update: Petrino still salty about ground marker at Clemson game ]

I think some of this is blowback from how big a game this was, the fact that many UL fans were calling our stadium Ref Valley(if you have ANY level of knowledge about Clemson, you clearly know we get NO favors from the ACC - I mean ZERO), the "Bouleware" choke-hold reaction/comments, etc. Passions are high on both sides and the fact your HC's history is less that stellar lends itself to a shorter leash by many fans.
That being said, I can't comment on what Petrino believes/feels about this specific situation. I do think as a HC you have to be very measured in how you respond and react to close calls not going your way. As fans, we can say anything, as after all, we are FANS, not paid professionals.
UL has a tremendous team and suspect you will run the table. Best of luck.

This is why Dabo is so much better than Bob

Oct 11, 2016, 5:11 PM

Dabo does not deflect blame when his team loses. Granted our Tigers don't lose much at all(see 20-1 record since start of 2015 season Bob), CDS would not play the blame game when his team when they were unable to know where the first down line to gain was located.

The 5 yard penalty played a huge part as he may have lost sight of needed the extra yardage, but the point is that ole Bob seems to place blame rather than accept and move on. We played under same conditions, with same rules, same refs, same sideline marker distances from field of play.... yet he still wants to think his team shoulda/coulda/woulda won that game. Part of me wants to play them again and wipe them off the field this time which a couple of plays turn out differently we would have. I bet Bob does not know about those plays his team got very luck to even be in the game. I have grown to truly dislike the human being that he is, he is truly a sad and dishonorable person. Who would want to play for this pigsty anyway, what a bunch of poor kids.

Thankfully we have CDS, not that ole Bob fellar!

Go Tigers!!

Hey A$S hole, if you would coach your guys to go as far as they can toward the end zone, they won't have any problems with how far they should go. But if you are just coaching them to get to the 1st down marker, you will lose a few more games this year. Clemson coaches teach our guys to go as far as they can until someone stops them, and if they don't physically stop them, they will run into the endzone, you should try that, it really works out well!!!!

Re: FB Update: Petrino still salty about ground marker at Clemson game

Oct 11, 2016, 9:45 PM

"I'm not sure that he knew exactly where he needed to go." said Patrino ...

... where he "needed to go" was as far as he could get, be it the 3 yard line, the 2 yard line or the endzone ... and the position of the marker should not have been a factor in his effort to get there !!

If a player limits his effort to just getting as far as he "needed to go" then his A## should be on the bench, not on the field.

Sort of long tirade against Bobby P

Oct 12, 2016, 1:52 AM

It's alright and understandable to talk about that stuff around your family, friends, your team, your dog; but FFS when you take 'the refs screwed us' nonsense to the press you just look like an amateur or a coot, which is the same thing.
Grab a pillow, put it to your face and scream to your heart's content. Take your clothes off, walk over to the nearest window and cry as you watch the rain fall. Draw horns, a moustache and some missing teeth on a photo of the Line Marker Guy or Mighty Ben or Dabo or whomever.
I can think of any number of ways to get through your pain, son.
Deal With It.
A reality check might help.
Have you considered the 5 CU TOs, 2 all but certain TDs, resulting in a lopsided 37:29 to 22:31 difference in time of possession? What about 99 plays to 62, yet only 60 more yds total offense?
How about the fact you only converted 5 more 1st downs?
What about yds per play - Lou 6.5 and CU 10?
Lest I forget, what about the score? 42 -36? Hallelujah!

Bobby Bobby Bobby, you're killing me, man. You oughtta be thanking us. Clemson would have a stronger argument if we held a press conference to discuss how we should have beaten you fools by 2 TDs or more.
We don't pull that rookie ****.
I'm beginning to understand why your face has such an odd red hue. Under these conditions, a beat down and public whining would tend to have that effect, I imagine.

Maybe this presser on bended knee is a media plea not to be forgotten in the 1st CFP poll.
If this is the case, here's some solid advice. While you're kneeling down there begging for respect, use the moment to put your hands together and pray you don't see us again this year.
Tigers have long memories and we thrive on this sort of disrespect.
Suck it, LOU!

Clemson controls their own destiny.... Win

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That sounds like a math problem to me.

Oct 13, 2016, 10:12 AM

It was 4th and 12. 12 yards past the line of scrimmage to the line of gain. Let's see, they were on our 14 so they needed to add, no wait, that's a take away problem. Addition won't work on this side of the field you have to have math skills which include subtraction. Maybe, as I pointed out on Sunday after the game, Louisville players don't get to subtraction until next semester.

From a more serious perspective, if you're running from the middle of the field in a more lateral direction toward the sideline the markers are very important. If you're already close to the sideline and only three yards from the LOS there shouldn't be any confusion as to how far you need to go to the line of gain. It was obvious he ran a three yard route so it must have also been obvious that he needed another 9 yds after the catch.

Here is a list of my questions. Why did he go out of bounds? If the clock stops on first downs to move the chains why did he 'step,' out of bounds?

There's a couple of legitimate reasons. He was excited and didn't remember that it was 4th down. He ran the wrong route and should have gone 12 yards before curling toward the QB. He thought he'd run 12 yards and had achieved a first down.

He didn't step out of bounds, he was knocked out of bounds. He ran the correct route, saw two of our defenders coming toward him across the middle of the field forcing him to go straight at Edmonts and just got beaten by a good defense. That's what I saw from the film. If you watch it you will see for yourself that he had no choice.
