As much as I hate to say it, we must use the portal to backfill. In today's age of free agency there is just no way around it. Sad for college football.

Using your own words, how do you "backfill" a roster with players entering the portal, whose main reason for entering the Portal was they weren't starting.
Sure ,it'd be nice to snag a couple DE's and A tall WR, basically the only positions someone could start at on this team.

Not all players in the portal weren't starting anymore. Look at the starting offensive guard for Bama who just entered the portal.

"backfilling" the roster thru Portal. That's why I used the OP's words, because there's always one that wants to point out a starter here or there, when the overwhelming number of Portal Jumpers are not starter. That's why close to half never find a home.

just to use WR as an example...........Antonio is the ONLY WR who's job should be "safe"
If we had a chance at getting an ELITE Olineman...........I don't care who's job he "takes"........if he's better, he's better.
I don't like the portal any more than the next person, but it's here to stay and a resource that NEEDS to be used.

some may think they can "get away with" going the HS route to "backfill" losses
some may say "hey, this guy is elite......I know we're in decent shape at this position, but this is an upgrade"

face younger players passing them on the depth charts, why would it be preferable to go the portal route for replacements rather than replacing them with a new crop fresh out of high school? Not saying at all that the portal should be completely discounted, but these types of roster losses don't necessarily scream urgency.

Only way we get a top player is if we have an obvious hole.
We aren't guaranteeing anyone anything and I doubt we are paying them or contacting them before they are in the portal.
Best chance is probably a player we recruited who was productive where they were but wants a change of scene or wants to move back to SC.
