The difference is that Jeffrey Goldberg and The Atlantic is one of the most-respected media sources there is, whereas American Thinker is pure garbage with barely more credibility than Infowars, designed to misinform and mislead those...susceptible to its message.
I mean, nobody even knows who owns this particular rag because it won't disclose its own ownership, and it's bombed more fact checks than you can shake a stick at...but it's just the same as The Atlantic, right?
A simple Google check would have revealed all of this. Why is checking a source so hard?
https://mediabiasfactcheck.com/american-thinker/ American Thinker - Media Bias/Fact Check QUESTIONABLE SOURCE A questionable source exhibits one or more of the following: extreme bias, consistent promotion of propaganda/conspiracies, poor or no sourcing to credible information, a complete lack of transparency and/or is fake news. Fake News is the deliberate attempt to publish hoaxes and/or disinformation for the purpose of profit or influence (Learn More). Sources listed in the Questionable Category may be very untrustworthy and should be fact checked on a per article basis. Please note sources on this list are not considered fake news unless specifically written in the reasoning section for that source. See all Questionable sources. Overall, we rate the American Thinker, Questionable based on extreme right wing bias, promotion of conspiracy theories/pseudoscience, use of poor sources and several failed fact checks. Supposedly the White House maids have been complaining constantly about Trump's constant "skid marks" in his boxers they must wash. Word is that he really has extreme irritable bowel syndrome. That's usually a sign of an underlying health problem much worse. It's a problem. 2 years tops. Per anonymous sources.

Fake news. Trump is a tighty whitey man, I’d bet my life on it.

in terms of what to believe, but you are making a false equivalence when it comes to sourcing. Unless you just think they are lying, which maybe you do, the Atlantic's reporters/editors would obviously know who their sources are, and their reliability. It's not the same as just reading something anonymously written on the internet.
