Struggling leadership. 2vs3 is bad enough but a 1/4 2/3 and then winners play another game.
Would they also want to do that for basketball?

The regular season used to be extremely competitive and exciting when you had to go 11-0 (10-1 puts your fate in the hands of the voters) to make the natty.

Now all you have to do is be in the top 2 of the ACC to be placed into a play in game for the CFP.

The proposal to put the top 4 in the ACC in play in games will make the regular season even less exciting.

No, choosing the national champion by vote of a sports writers is the dumbest thing ever done in the history of sports. Anything is an upgrade over that.

I think it’s an idiotic idea but i don’t think he’s saying play another game. He said last game of the season. So that would require moving all the rivalry games out of rivalry weekend and playing the 4 teams that weekend. Stupid.

scholastically on players....So now, that idiot wants the ACC champ to play 14 games BEFORE the real playoffs? Is that what I read?

No that's not what you read. What the commissioner is proposing is that the last regular season game be a matchup of the top four teams in the conference. In other words, the ACC would actually only schedule Severn conference games for the regular season. The final weekend of the season, the top four teams would get matched up in the facto playoff games, and the rest of the league would just get matched up more or less at random. You would still play 12 games. It's just that the final game wouldn't be scheduled prior to the season starting.

This idea may be the brainchild of ESPSUX. THEY WANT AS MANY PLAYOFF GAMES AS POSSIBLE. I think they have brought this idea to Sankey and I think but am not sure, that he was open to the idea if ESPSUX upped the money paid to the SEC tv contract. I suspect that Phillips in negotiating a new extension with ESPSUX is doing the same thing. This idea may, and I am only speculating, have been presented at the big ACC meeting in Charlotte last week.

I think the ACC is looking to generate more revenue from ESPSUX. If this flies, it may be one way to get Clemson and FSU more money since they would in 90% of the time be playing in that game and might get the lions share of the extra revenue this would generate as a way to get those two teams to be happy to stay in the ACC. I COULD SEE 2 of those 4 ACC teams making it to a 16 team cfp game.

WE would have to move the game with Usuck or quit playing it. The SEC may want to quit playing it when they start scheduling inter conference games with the BIG. If all power 4 conferences went to this 4 team conference championship playoff with last reg. Season game becoming the first conference playoff game, the TV contracts would be more valuable for all.

I don't think this is an original idea from Phillips. He is not smart enough to come up with anything original.

Re: Second and third place teams to play in acc championship game? No thanks

Jan 19, 2025, 8:06 PM

The value of the conference TV contracts would not really be affected, because no additional inventory is added.

Re: Second and third place teams to play in acc championship game? No thanks

Jan 19, 2025, 8:16 PM

No additional games added, but an additional conference championship game is added with the top 4 teams competing which can be sold and billed as a conference championship series. Advertisers will have to pay higher rates since it is a conference championship series.

So, yes, it makes the contract more valuable.

Jan 19, 2025, 8:25 PM

In practice honestly no it really doesn't. The ratings aren't gonna increase that much, And that Is what determines the value.

I guess we don’t care about these players having to play even more games and risking injury, especially so late in the year when guys are already banged up from a long season.

But, I guess now that we are paying them we can treat them as employees and not give a cr@p.

There are no additional games added. One regular season game at the end of the season is now a conference championship series game.

I'd be game for this.

Easy to hate on but a conference playoff would be cool too and add to the resume. This is actually the forward-thinking we need to have a better product on display.

Personally, I'd take it one step further and add a few more teams (out west) to break into 4 pods by geography. Play at the top seed's stadium and the championship match can either be in Charlotte or some other neutral site area....or just go play it at the higher seed's stadium.

Either way, easy to hate on the ACC + Jim but it's actually a better idea than given credit IMO.

2025 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wouldnt that mean the 4 teams would have to be determined

Jan 19, 2025, 10:47 PM

After only 7 conference games? Not sure how it would work.

Also you could possibly play 2 teams twice. We open season with FSU. Then get GT. At end of 7 games standing are Clemson Miami GT FSU.

We are matched against FSU (again) GT beats Miami. Then we get GT again. Sounds goofy.
