Regardless if ETN stays or goes pro, could we see a RB transfer?

Dec 20, 2019, 10:36 AM

Looking at the depth chart, we will have a ton of talent at RB next year. I'm assuming we try to RS Pryor, that still leaves Dixon-Dukes-Mellusi-Bowman-Rencher and possibly ETN. I'm assuming if ETN stays, Bowman redshirts. Even though we distribute the ball very well between our RBs, will it be enough to keep the unit intact or do you see a RB transferring?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I would guess the chances of ETN staying are 0.0

Dec 20, 2019, 10:37 AM

That being said, it's likely at least one RB will transfer.

I keep telling you guys, ETN still needs to work on his pass catching and protecting - he stays.

Re: Regardless if ETN stays or goes pro, could we see a RB transfer?

Dec 20, 2019, 10:41 AM

First, ETN is gone. I would be absolutely shocked if he isn't.

Second, The depth chart for this season was originally supposed to be ETN, Dixon, Feaster, Dukes, and Mellusi.

Losing ETN and Feaster and adding Bowman and Pryor is just back to normal.

We were actually a little thinner at RB this season than we like to be.

None of this means that we won't have a transfer, but 5 scholarship guys is expected.

I expect Rencher is the odd man out moving forward as we have seen his number of plays get reduced late in the season in favor of Dukes and Mellusi.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree, ETN is going pro.

Dec 20, 2019, 10:47 AM

Rencher seems to have gotten the fewest carries, has no breakaway TDs, and seems to have the least upside although he is a very good runner.

I see the two-deep being Dixon and Mellusi in 2020.

Re: I agree, ETN is going pro.

Dec 20, 2019, 10:58 AM

Bowman will have to learn some things before Elliot trusts him to be out there a lot, but he is an absolute wildcard and could be anywhere from starting to 4th string depending on how he picks up our scheme and if he can pass block.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Rencher's plays have been reduced? That can't be right, it

Dec 20, 2019, 10:59 AM [ in reply to Re: Regardless if ETN stays or goes pro, could we see a RB transfer? ]

was only in May when quozzel said Clemson would need Rencher to have 100+ carries and 500+ yards this year.

"Clemson will be asking - and needing - a largely unrecruited local walk-on from TL Hannah to tote the rock 100+ times this year, and generate at least 500+ yards in production in the process...because those carries could well mean the difference between Etienne and Dixon arriving to the playoffs with fresh legs or gimping in with the tread worn off their tires.

It's a big ask. And if Clemson is to repeat in 2019, Rencher's almost going to have to deliver."

In review, Clemson is about to start the playoffs, and Rencher this year has *checks notes* 26 carries for 135 yards. Meanwhile Mellusi has 44 and Dukes has 32.

By the way, in that thread deroberts pointed out how ridiculous quozzel's post was and he was right.

When each post includes 1000+ words, you are bound to have a paragraph be off base here and there.

Quozzel is certainly very informative and almost always has really good information in those posts.

The fact that deroberts ridiculed quozzel and was right in doing so proves that it was a weird day on the bored.

I too thought Rencher would play a bigger role based on how Feaster and Choice were used the year before.

What I didn't take into account was that with games getting so out of hand early, Rencher was skipped over in many games and the developmental "blowout carries" were passed down to Mellusi and Dukes.

In 2018 there was only Dixon to pass carries to which meant there were more carries for RB 2 & 3 late in games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It should also be pointed out that

Dec 20, 2019, 11:13 AM

Knuck® lost a bet in that thread to CourageousTiger

This isn't the first time quozzel has been way off base, I still remember dsp (RIP in pieces) taking him to task for not knowing the receiver positions in one of his 1,000+ word essays.

Re: It should also be pointed out that

Dec 20, 2019, 11:51 AM

Mostly what I was wrong about was the freshmen. I didn't think they'd be ready - Mellusi because he was listed at 175 and looked underweight on his high school film, and because exactly like Wayne Gallman he came from a Wing-T and it takes time to get that east-west tendency out of their game and re-program them to stick their foot in the ground and slash north-south between the tackles. It took Gallman at least a year and a half to really stop doing that. But he came in a lot bigger than I expected - he put on like 35 pounds his senior year of high school! - and he seemed to adapt faster than Gallman did too because I didn't see much east-west stuff from him at all.

Dukes I just plain under-estimated. I saw a last-second fallback kid from a private school; I thought he looked like an athlete but I thought in no way would he be ready to do more than a brief 4-game cameo against bodybag opponents; I thought he was a lock to redshirt.

My math, though, was pretty durn good. Between Rencher and the kids they did get 98 carries for 561 yards, which is almost spot on for the 100 for 500 I thought Rencher would have to get...I just thought it'd be Rencher having to take that load because I didn't think either of the freshmen would beat a redshirt.

FWIW.

Sorry if my talking about football on a football forum gets under your skin. You should try it sometime, though. This might come as a shock, but I'm fairly certain that's actually what this place is for.

The haters have made this website less interesting through the years. They keep hammering at posters until they feel it’s just not worth it and leave. I have seen many leave through the years that I actually liked to read. Without quozzel and a select few others, there’s not much thought put into posts on this board. Now everyone’s after Judge Keller. We’ll see if he stays. He knows more about basketball than 99% on this board.

How many bold football predictions have you made over the past couple years? Please feel free to list them. Being critical behind a keyboard incurs no risk and renders you subject to zero accountability.

Ray Dalio founded the largest hedge fund in the world. His company is founded on the practice of forcing employees to make predictions about investing (market behavior, macroeconomics,etc.....) and assessing those predictions among peers. In fact, an employee’s promotion in the company in dependent on his or her success rate (and willingness play and further the discussion). No one bats 1.000, and I think the absolute best and brightest, Ray Dalio included, only marginally hit over the majority of the time.

Your calling out Q in this fashion seems spiteful and is sort of like calling Ray Dalio or Warren Buffett out on a rare miss they made.

Keep posting, Q.

Re: Regardless if ETN stays or goes pro, could we see a RB transfer?

Dec 20, 2019, 10:49 AM

Bowman definitely won't redshirt. When the other RBs see him practice in the spring, it may encourage one to transfer but I doubt it.

Elliot will protect the vets at RB most of the season. That is how he coaches the position.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Regardless if ETN stays or goes pro, could we see a RB transfer?

Dec 20, 2019, 11:19 AM

This is funny that people still think this about our coaches.

Just because Elliot bases his trust of our RBs off of aspects of their game other than just when the ball is in their hands, people think he lets older players take reps they shouldn't be taking.

In a tight situation, Elliot defers to be the all-around back. Meaning the player who can do everything that is asked of them.

ETN is people's focus when they say things similar to what you have said, but even Travis noted prior to last season that sometimes during his freshman year he didn't even know where he was supposed to run on plays where he was getting the ball.

Yes he still got to play a good bit because even his mistakes seemed to work out most of the time, but there were definitely reasons why he did not take over as the starter until his sophomore season.

Dukes reminds me a lot of Rod McDowell.

I could see him contributing as in his junior and senior seasons.

Based on our higher level of recruiting, I don't see him being the starter but he definitely has something to offer our offense.

Dukes is not ETN, but who is? He seems serviceable, maybe not electric or stellar. Clemson has had a ton of serviceable backs start through the years. Maybe we are approaching a time that we can see a stream of stellar backs come through, who knows.

Etienne is gone and that leaves us with

Dec 20, 2019, 10:50 AM

5 running backs. Rencher is good in his role, but is not on the level with the others. Dixon will be 3 years removed from high school and a possible, though unlikely, early entrant to the NFL. The other guys are young with two true freshmen. Like you said, Pryor may likely redshirt leaving us with 4.

I don't think we see any of them transfer given that and the number of running backs we give carries to every game.

Re: Etienne is gone and that leaves us with

No Dixon is a true sophomore unless he went to prep school for a year after graduating from high school. If you remember Dabo was like 2 in a row for Elliott finding 3 star running back gold back-to-back with ETN and Dixon. I think he said Elliott must have a horseshoe somewhere.

The body of your post is not. KJ Henry redshirted last season.

Before him, Mac Alexander redshirted (injury related) and Shaq Smith redshirted (development related).

KJ was a 230lb DE that needed to gain some weight and he probably never would've redshirted if we didn't bring back an entire loaded defensive line.

Any chance if we lose some backups to transfer we go back hard after Daniyel Ngata? He would be a great weapon as a pass catcher out of the backfield.

Re: Regardless if ETN stays or goes pro, could we see a RB transfer?

Dec 20, 2019, 6:28 PM

It would be stunning if Etienne didn’t leave, but if he doesn’t there’s still no chance Bowman redshirts barring injury. When he lands on campus, he’ll probably be the second most talented back, despite how impressive Lyn-J has been for us. Bowman, to me, is then best running back in the country...Zach Evans is a fantastic prospect but I’m taken aback by Bowman’s highlight reel. I’m guessing, like most freshman, he’ll be a poor pass blocker, so Lyn-J will be RB1 next season, but Bowman’s skill is too good for him not to see the field.

I do think you’re right about a transfer though. That’s a crowded room even if Etienne is gone.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Bowman ain't redshirting. We only get him for 3 years

Dec 21, 2019, 9:02 AM

while walking to Death Valley ( yes the real one before someone snipes) who said he was not happy with his number of carries. But to speculate whether or not he would consider a transfer is not for public discussion as I would never divulge his name since this was a private discussion. And I think any RB would not be happy about their # of touches - maybe even Etienne.
