Question about gas availability.
May 11, 2021, 8:31 AM
|
|
Tomorrow my wife and I are heading out on our "first post-covid vacation." Taking a 2+ week road trip, visiting friends, national parks and state parks.
We will be driving through upstate SC on Thursday. (Going rom Statesboro GA to Marion. From there heading up blue ridge parkway to Shenandoah NP.
Are we gonna be able to buy gas? I'm reading a few horror stories (no las, 2 hour lines, etc.) but I'm also reading that prices are up but gas is still readily available.
Help an old man, and a Nole, out - please. What is the gas situation in SC?
Thanks.

There were long lines and empty pumps in parts of Greenville and Laurens County, SC last night. I can't speak for the other areas.

Here in WNC/Asheville, we are tapped out it seems. My wife just went looking and not one of the local gas stations had fuel available - or at least all bagged up. Lines were around the block last night so who-knows. Panicking folks made it worse.

Brett,
I live on the GA side of lower state SC. This is the first I’ve heard of a gas shortage. We are only 50min to an hour from Statesboro. There is plenty of gas and diesel fuel here if that helps

First I've heard about a shortage, but most of the gas that I buy, I buy it from one of the two Sam's locations here in cootlumbia, and I just filled up on Sunday after taking my wife to Outback for mothers day... Have a great vacation!!!!

Long story short, the DarkSide hackers from Russia have the main pipeline shut down. Until they get those main pipeline stations in Georgia restored - which could be a few days or a few weeks, depending on how well those Russkie ransomware jackholes did the job - we're going to have shortages.
They ain't saying, because I don't think they know. It could be tomorrow. It could be a month. And it's going to effect the entire Southeast region from everywhere South of Maryland, apparently.

Well, the DarkSide guys are crooks, officially not connected to either Fancy Bear or Cozy Bear, the hacker arms of the SRB and GRU, the two Russian intelligence agencies that have been hacking up a storm here in the West.
The thing is, though, those two agencies developed a lot of very sophisticated toolkits that have been popping up a lot downstream in the Net, or modded versions of those, and there's not really a hard line between the Russian state agencies, the government, the Russian mob, and the Russian oligarchy...it all sort of...blends together. Basically, Russia is a bent Kleptacracy, and it all sort of runs together, and it wouldn't be a shock if the DarkSide guys either had the tacit permission of the Russian government, or if it actually was some of the same guys, taking their talents private for fun and profit.
And some of those Russian coders are just amazing anyhow. There's one guy called Boris Vorontsov - who is of course in no way connected to either DarkSide or Cozy Bear/Fancy Bear, Good Heavens No - who almost casually does graphics modifications for Western games. I mean, I know better, but his stuff makes games so @$^$ing pretty I just can't help it, so I use enbdev's stuff even though I know I'm probably helping launch denial-of-service bot attacks on banks in Singapore or some such too, his stuff is just that amazing. Boris is just amazingly rude, but the dude is a no-kidding genius, he's just like: Your Game Sux. Here. I Fix. Now Better. Eff You. (I have his patches on all my games.)
They just have a...culture, over there.

Thanks to all who have answered.
We will spend the night in Statesboro, GA and fill up there. It's about 270 miles from there to Marion, NC, so we can make it there with no problem. The next night we'll be heading up Blue Ridge Parkway and into VA.
Seems like those days (Friday and Saturday) may be the most difficult. Hopefully, the problem will be solved by then.
I'll keep an eye out as we go through SC and try to fill up before we get to Marion. I will need to find one spot somewhere between Marion and Shenandoah NP to fill up.

You will not find gas in blue ridge parkway. Either rent a Tesla or bring lots of gas cans. People have panic bought all the supply across all of western NC

I can only tell you what historically has happened

In the upstate due to these media frenzies.
For 3 days the lines will be long.. the shelves bare... on the 4th day you will be able to get what you need easily.. ...and on the 6th, 7th, 8th days...and on and on... until the next panic.
Media makes money on this stuff so they have a reason to create panic.
But.. the general public should understand supply chains. ...there is always finished goods in transit, in process, and in saftey stock.
There are always raw materials to make finished goods in route, in process, and in saftey stock.

Well, according to the New York Times, you guys are full of crap.
They say there are no shortages and no long lines, and nationally the price has only “spiked” half a penny. They do acknowledge that production is currently off line, and that Colonial has not given a projected restart date. But they do not envision any new crises [that they haven’t caused based on fraudulent reporting].
In my work travels yesterday from Augusta to Greenwood and Newberry, prices were up .18-.25 from normal. Lines began when people got off from school and work.
Today between Augusta and Athens, GA, prices are up even more.

My point being, once again the NYT doesn’t have the sense to look out the window before doing a weather report. I don’t know what experts give them their information, but they sure can’t help you find gasoline.

So what I have hear and I don't know if I am right. That it is only affecting the east coast. So it depends on where you are going.

Well, my daughter called from Conway, SC and said it is extremely hard to find fuel in the Myrtle Beach area and most of the time it is Premium. It is also Biker Week in the Grand Strand. Just a heads up.

I’m not expecting too many problems in the Lowcountry and especially around Charleston, because we get our gas from tanker ships. That’s also why we pay higher gas prices. As you move inland from the coast gas prices get cheaper because that gas comes from pipelines.
My parents live in Orangeburg county, up on Lake Marion in the Eutawville area, and they have gas stations that have already closed because they are out of gas.

A guy named Patrick de Haan @GasBuddyGuy has been tracking the factual data...roughly 70% of metro area gas stations in upstate SC, Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham, Norfolk/Portsmouth are OUT OF GAS.
That includes 17% of all stations in GA, 17% in SC and 28% in NC as of 11 am this morning.
Best bet is to get gas before you need it at stations in between metro areas. You may need to venture a little ways past the exit ramp. Be prepared to pay more.
The Biden Regime has now authorized the sale of dirtier, less refined gas in the MD/DC/PA markets in order to ‘ease the strain.’ Not making this up. That’s gonna hurt their credibility for awhile (a day or so.)

You will be going by Roanoke, VA. A lot of the stations are out. Also, you will have to detour just before you get to Roanoke because part of the Parkway fell off the mountain. The highway department finally got around to installing decent detour signs, but you still need to be on the lookout for them or you could easily miss them.
