I think recruits are learning the basics of supply and demand. Commit early to make sure you get some nil. As other top recruits at your position commit you wait. Then when several of the top recruits commit decommit and get a larger nil deal.

Gus Malzahn's offense is looking for a dual threat QB who leans to the run side when it comes to athletic ability. (I've heard it described as a "good runner, average passer" type player.)
I don't know if Malzahn will be able to implement his offense, either this year with Castellanos or next year with whoever the QB is.
But, Smidgel is not the athletic style QB Norvell and Malzahn will be looking for.
