Other than being my dad (different Frank Howard, great story) I met him back in 1982-1983 in the old training room in Jervey. If you ever talked to him in person then you know others have similar stories. He was a treasure to Clemson University, and those of us who actually spoke with him understand. Other schools don't have the pleasure of having a Frank Howard, or John Heisman, or Danny Ford, or Dabo Swinney. Few schools have the pleasure of ever employing these types of men. I have had the pleasure of speaking with Coaches Frank, Danny, and Dabo, and will again at every opportunity. Go Tigers!!!

I met coaches Ford, Hatfield and West. Coach Ford is awesome! Met him twice-once in the old Winn Dixie parking lot and again outside of a restaurant just off 85. Really nice man talked for a few moments both times. Hatfield in Clemson House cafeteria. He just stared at me when I said good morning to him. He wasn't my favorite by any means. Coach West I met at Todd & Moore at an autograph session I think in 94 or 95. He asked me what high school I went to like he was gonna recruit me or something. I told him I graduated Clemson in 92 and we both laughed although I wished at the time I still had eligibility left.

He was my dad’s line coach when he played at Clemson. Met him in our motel room when he stopped by to see my dad (while I was still asleep) I remember walking down the hall of the motel and us passing Tree Rollins and Coach told him to palm the ceiling and he did I thought it was amazing since I had never seen anyone that tall. Great man and was a dear friend of my dads through the years.

Very cool... I met Tree at Airport High School around 1976 when the Clemson basketball team came to play the teachers. It wasn't much of a game, but I remember (I was about 14) standing next to Tree and coming up to his hip. Stan Rome and a few others I can't remember were there also.

Coach on far right (in jacket) is my uncle, Robert Morgan Jones. He was defensive end coach under Coach Howard and also golf coach for thirty years. I attended many games in my pre-high school years and met all the coaches several times. Coach Jones was also a Brigadier General in Army reserve after WW2. A #### of a guy and a pleasure to meet and socialize with.

Met him with my dad and grandfather. He told my dad, "You smoke and I chew, you don't blow your smoke on me and I wont spit on you." I was very young at the time and dont remember it much.

Met Tommy Bowden at a FCA event. I too was at Clemson in the 80’s. My wife met dabo’s wife a few years ago when we were taking our kids to the basketball camp. My son played basketball with dabo when he showed up at the camp. My son still talks about that..

I don’t recall any exact conversation with him but back in 1965 when I was a freshman, students were allowed to walk right up to the team during practice. I remember standing right behind him during several practices and was quite entertained by his interactions with players- especially the ones who messed up a play.

I never actually met him, but I was at several of our home games when he was still walking up and down the sidelines during home games at Clemson. Honestly back then I was a little intimidated by the cranky looking old man that was hollering at our players during the game.

Was in the city post office with my roommate the summer of 81 and he came up behind us as we were checking out the short shorts of two co-eds. As his big ol hand grabbed our shoulders he said, Boyz you better get while you'er young, you better get it while you'er young. We laughed about that all summer and fall.

I had the pleasure of going to his office in Jervey, he was retired at this point, to ask him to sign my Block C paddle. He said, "Son are you football? " I said no sir, baseball. He grinned and said, "Baseball! Bunk up right here at my desk so I can wear you out with this paddle! " I was getting ready to lean on the desk until he signed my paddle and handed it back to me. I was a little nervous for a few minutes. And I still have the paddle.

Met him and talked to him several times as a student who wrote for The Tiger student newspaper.
One of a kind and a Clemson Legend. He was as friendly and folksy as they come. His players loved him and he was tough as nails on them.

On one football weekend before the game, I stepped into one of the nearby buildings near Death Valley to find a restroom. As I was entering, I noticed an elderly man trying to get the heavy door open. I helped the gentleman through the door only to realize that this was THE Coach Frank Howard! He was looking for the restroom, too. We both did our business, and then had a 15-minute conversation. The entire time, I was thinking of how remarkable it was that I was talking to Coach Howard, and also that there was no one around to help this elderly Clemson legend. I think that he died the next year.

Back in the early '70s, Frank Howard spoke to our Jaycees group in Charlotte. I got there early and after introducing myself as a Clemson grad, we spoke for about 30 minutes, His funniest line had to do with him stepping down as head football coach. He said it was for health reasons. He followed up with, "The alumni were sick of me!" Always a funny guy!

speak to him occasionally while on the Cheerleading Team and as Editor of "The Tiger."
A funny story: there is an old B&W photo of me exiting the library pond, soaking wet after a pep rally in the amphitheater, for in those days students would toss the male team members into the pond. Dean Walter Cox and Coach Howard were standing nearby, and as I walked toward them, they both laughed and Coach grunted, "Boy, if you stand sideways, nobody'll see you 'cause you's skinny as a toothpick!" We laughed. Some years later, both were in Columbia for some event, which I happened to attend, and I bade my respects to both. Howard immediately joked, "Boy, you's still skinny as a toothpick!" I was stunned he remembered that encounter years before, but the three of us had another big laugh.
One other surprise, while serving as "The Tiger" Editor: we had received numerous student complaints about the on campus bookstore, which was under Howard's control, so we investigated, and I wrote a lead editorial with criticisms and suggestions. Two days after its publication I received a handwritten note from Howard acknowledging the complaints and a promise for immediate changes. And he moved immediately to put them in effect. Both hours and days were extended, additional speedy checkouts were added, additional supplies of popular items were added, and higher levels of courtesy to students were adopted. I sent him a thank you note later on, and the paper acknowledged the efforts. I was impressed with his professionalism handling the manner, as well as his demeanor afterwards, for he actually complimented us on the way we handled the matter in the paper.
Lastly, I don't mind admitting that when he died, I shed a tear, for I knew his dedication to Clemson, and I knew he was simply a good man.

I never met Coach Howard but I did meet Dabo. I was at a Clemson IPTAY meeting in Spartanburg and was relieving Myself at a urinal and Dabo walked up beside Me. As we were both Finishing up, another Guy asked Dabo for His autograph. Dabo immediately said " I can't now, I have My Hands full". The Guy turned red and walked out! Dabo turned to me and smiled. True Story!

Week of South Carolina game in 88 I think. Another student and I were showing a visiting friend around campus and went by the stadium and jervey. Coach Howard still kept an office there at the time. Asked the lady up front if coach Howard was in and she took us back to his office. We spent about 30 minutes listening to him tell stories, he had no idea who we were. Very cool experience.

all student-athletes shared the same training/weight room in Jervey. Occasionally Coach Howard would randomly pop in for a visit. Everything would come to a complete stop as everyone would listen to him spin a yarn or two. It was always entertaining for those fortunate enough to be there during one of those times.

Met Coach Howard at Jervey in 76 when I was in 6th grade.
Also met him in 1992 or 93 at a party thrown for Senator Thurman at Danny Ford's lake house. Coach Howard was hilarious in his roast of Thurman. One of his jokes was, "My daughter is newborn unit nurse at the hospital in Florence. I told her I was going to see Senator Thurman today. She said, good. Please tell him his future wife was born here last night."

As a kid, back in the early 90's, we'd go over to Jervey and go inside and look at all the pictures of former athletes on the walls in those long hallways....One time I was using the restroom in that hallway and Coach Howard walked in. He said "looks like we have the same idea, huh, young man?" I'll never forget it.

Used to see Coach Howard at basketball games and got to chat a couple of times.
Went to the same church as Coach Ford and they frequently sat behind me. Danny never sang when we all stood up for the songs. Go figure. I'd say Hi or Good Morning to him but that was that. Tried to treat him like a normal guy and not go all football fan on him on a Sunday morning at church.
Met Coach Hatfield once. Very nice guy.
Have also had the pleasure of meeting the late great Jim Phillips as well as the current and great Tim Bourret.

The Friday of spring break 1971 my brother Gregg and I had to stay in Clemson on Friday night in order to attend an engagement party in Greenville on Saturday night. He and I went to the old Clemson house barbershop to get a haircut that Friday afternoon. When we got there, the only people in the barbershop were Frank Howard and the barber and Coach Howard was having his haircut. After we sat down coach, Howard spoke to us and we made introductions. He then proceeded to tell us story after story after story about his coaching career. You cannot imagine what that was like. My favorite Was that he told us he would send a quart of liquor to the base commander at Fort Jackson so that a running back station at Fort Jackson could meet them on game days during World War II to play football for Clemson. There were many many many more stories, but that was the most colorful.. He was indeed a wonderful man who loved his players and his fellow man.

Yes, met Frank in Chesnee SC when Danny Ford brought him over for a talk during a BBQ in which we also invited Chicken fans. A few actually showed up. There was this one midget of a gamecock fan who was over 30 years old that Frank ask when he was going to grow up. He asked those attendees if they had rather be a chicken or a tiger. Fun time for all.

I never met Frank but I grew up going to games, always at 1:00, and seeing him with his old hat on. Back in those days, we always had the TV highlight show and remember Frank with his southern drawl saying things like Gore up the middle for four but of course he said it as fo. There was only one Frank Howard and we were lucky to have him as both a coach and representative of Clemson.

Yes I did in the 60’s with my folks. Too young to recall conversation, but I knew he was the coach and I remembered his cool crusty voice.

I met him when I was a Freshmen in 1972 I sat just up one row from him at a Clemson soccer game. He asked me if I knew anything about soccer?
I told him all I knew if we got the ball in that goal we get a point. If the ball goes in the other goal, they get the point.
Back in those days Clemson used to look for players all over the world. Very few of the soccer players were US citizens. But we were always #1.

Oh yeah , met him on a few occasions.. one time during the event of fall practice "meet the players"on Fan appreciation day in Mid August, mostly during the late 70's and during the 80's, when Danny Ford was coaching , I remember he told my younger brother he would make a good tackle one day, he was about 10 yrs old , so I'm guessing 1980... Located about where tiger walk is located now, Frank Howard sitting on the tailgate of a Ford pickup truck... Things and times were so much more simpler then.... Go Tigers!!💪💪

Growing up in Clemson (1955-1977) I met Coach Howard many times. He was bigger than life and part of the fabric of the community. It was not uncommon to run into him when we went to the Clemson House for Sunday lunches and such. Part of the reason that it was special growing up there. Running into Coach Howard and knowing folks like Banks McFadden will always be treasured memories.

I was 6 years old. The summer camp I was signed up for had closed down and we hadn’t gotten the notice. As a fall back, Dad took us the the Clemson House. Dad called Coach Howard and we spent quite a while listening to Dad and Coach Howard tell stories and laugh.
Dad was on the 48 undefeated team and spoke with him frequently. I would see now and then at football games when he and Dad would connect.

I had the pleasure of meeting/talking with Coach Howard on several occasions. I wasn't that close to the Coach but he knew me through my father's business.
As a student, my friends were astounded one Sunday at the Holiday Inn Brunch when Coach Howard came up to our table. To shorten the story, three of us were medium build and one was jumbo-sized. After acknowledging me, he asked all the guys at the table what we ordered for lunch. The three of us gave our answer and he responded with: "Uh huh, that sounded mighty tasty". Our larger friend told Coach Howard what he ordered and before he could finish, the Bashful Baron blurted out: "AND A BAIL OF HAY!".
... bashful, he was not. Colorful, yes !

January 1, 1982, he was sitting at a table by himself at the hotel in Miami that was celebration central after the national championship. Sat down and talked , well, listened for a while! What a treasure!

I believe it was common for Coach Howard to ride a golf cart around the tailgating areas back in the day. I got the pleasure of meeting him one Saturday while he was making his rounds. My grandfather played for him at Clemson when he was an assistant under Neely.
I also had the pleasure of meeting Coach Wilhelm in Jervey one weekend when my Dad and I were up for some Clemson sporting event that weekend. Both had awesome personalities.

there used to be a designated location where students catch a ride. Frank Howard gave me a ride to greenville in 1969 just after we beat wake forest. he drove a Cadillac and he had a spittoon on the floorboard between us. he talked and told stories the entire ride. it was a great experience.

I met, and got to speak with Dabo for about 5 to 10 minutes at some big get together down around Atlanta after his first or second year as HC at Clemson. I think it was an IPTAY event or something. It's really funny looking back at it. No one was at the table talking to him really, so he didn't need to rush us off or anything, and we just got to chat with him for a while. Not surprising, he was a very personable, outgoing guy, and it was very obvious even back then that he was passionate about Clemson and had the potential to really take Clemson far. He was still unproven back in those days, and it's funny to look how far we've come and how much fame he has now.
I got to meet and speak with Danny Ford at a homebuilding convention in Columbia once. Also super personable. I looked at him as the peak of Clemson coaching for a long time, it was cool to have a chance to talk with him.
Never did get to meet Frank Howard though. I think I was just too young.
