Call off the dogs, the hunt is over...

May 10, 2023, 10:10 AM

I have found my automobile.

Wait, no, that's a Maserati MC20. I can't afford that. I'm getting this one:

Certified pre-owned 2020 Giulia Ti Sport (now they call it the Veloce - just means limited slip diff, sport suspension, and comically oversized paddle shifters). Warranty is good through 2026, which assuages my anxiety regarding Italian car reliability. It has the best torque converter automatic trans in the biz (ZF 8HP). It's also equipped with saddle leather interior and a 14 speaker Harman Kardon stereo.

I haven't been this excited about a new (to me) car since I bought my RX-8 back in 2007. And like the RX-8, I'm getting a sweet deal because resale value for these go off a cliff. And also like the RX-8, Obed® shall mock me for this acquisition for a minimum of ten years.

Aren't they Chryslers now?

2

May 10, 2023, 10:26 AM

That would be my only concern.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Stellantis is the parent company.

1

May 10, 2023, 10:35 AM

So there may be some cross-pollination. My salesman said he identified some Jeep bits in the Maserati SUVs. The Alfa is like 85% Italian and the rest is the German trans, so I don't think there is much if any Chrysler DNA.

Still, Italians are not renowned for automotive reliability either.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Cool. Does it have the clover leaf on the side?

2

May 10, 2023, 10:29 AM

Hard-core Euro car guys love them some Alfas.

Enjoy.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg2016_nascar_champ.gif flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Unfortunately that's just on the Quadrifoglio.

2

May 10, 2023, 10:38 AM

Hence the four leaf clover: quad. It has the Ferrari-derived 2.9 liter turbo V6. That one's a tad outta my price range. And honestly, I don't think I need a car with a sub-5 second 0-60 time anyway. The 4 banger has 280 hp and 306 lb-ft of torque, which is still plenty of fun.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It really is an outstandingly beautiful car.

Your mechanic is going to really appreciate looking at it.

wheel-mounted or column-mounted?

Column-mounted as God intended.***

Walk me through the logic here then.

1

May 10, 2023, 11:20 AM

I'm certainly less of a car guy than you and Obed and a few others, but do you never have the need or intent to up- or downshift mid-turn? I realize that it's a fraction of a percent of the time that you actually get to drive your car like that, but it sure seems like an F1 driver would scoff at column-mounted shifters (or buttons, which would be even dumber).

Educate me on this. My body is ready.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgbadge-ringofhonor-19b.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's so you don't mix-up your downshift hand with your

2

May 10, 2023, 11:46 AM

upshift hand. I'd guess that F1 steering wheels have fewer degrees of travel, so they're less likely to invert the paddles. F1 drivers rarely take a hand off the wheel, whereas with a street car you might turn the wheel with one hand and flick a paddle with the other.

What's more confusing to me is why you'd have paddle shifters with a torque-converter automatic or especially a CVT. I guess they just think it looks cool.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looking at it, I'm going to assume that you would have to

4

May 10, 2023, 10:44 AM

strap your deer to the hood, and also probably add a trailer hitch in order to move furniture or take garbage cans to the dump. Seems kinda....unwieldy.

1

May 10, 2023, 12:10 PM [ in reply to Funnily enough, the first owner replaced the Giulia with a ]

I've been semi contemplating getting a 'sporty' sedan for commuting since my trucks getting some miles on it now, and that seems to be the consensus.

I really, REALLY want the new Nissan Z even though it isn't a sedan. I think I'd feel bad putting a ton of miles on one though.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No carbon fiber on this one.

2

May 10, 2023, 12:31 PM

And I wish it had the leather dash and upper doors, but it checks every other box for me.

Interior looks like this right cheer:

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Be glad about the dash

2

May 10, 2023, 12:36 PM

Every Stellantis product with the leather dash has glue failure within 3-4 years if the car spends any time in the sun at all. It looks sweet until it starts pulling up and curling.

dolts. That’s a sweet ride and congrats on working hard to obtain a dream. That gets forgotten.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are right about the mocking

2

May 10, 2023, 12:10 PM

IF you had bought that out of warranty. As it sits, that’s a super sweet ride and the warranty has solved the biggest issue that car has (aside from screaming for a manual transmission option). I hope you enjoy it and keep me in the loop on the ownership experience. Really wondering if their reputation is deserved or urban legend.
