Paralleling Tiggitys post, have a question for those whove been in Italy

I’m soliciting opinions on this and I think there are several of yall who’ve been-
I’m taking the wife and two older kids to Italy for spring break next year. I’ve never been, and frankly don’t feel right going to Europe and not going to France, but that’s another matter and I guess I want to see what the hype is about.
We’re going to spend 4 nights in Rome, and I’m looking for options for a second city for another 4 nights. Everyone I talk to says Florence, and I’m not opposed to the idea of Florence & day trips from there, but I also like splitting trips between a big busy city and somewhere smaller and laid back. To that end, I was considering somewhere smaller like Montepulciano, Amalfi, Lake Garda, or something along those lines. I don’t mind driving.
Y’all have suggestions for a first timer going there w young kids?

Hadnt thought of that. If dog-sitting is part of the cost, heck, you're halfway to sitting the kids. I need to think of all the ways I can apply this.

It was amazing. We did 3 nights in Rome and then drove up to Volterra to this place. Day tripped all around and did a few tours that picked us up. Place was amazing.

He’s 21, enjoys a Negroni and chasing tail. Which means, you might dig Milan but I don’ know what that means for the missus and the youngins.

Never been to Rome. Been to Milan, Florence, and Venice though. Florence, Venice, then Milan is my preferences in order. Wife would put Venice #1 because she pretends to be a romantic sometimes.

much for anyone depending on how that fits into travel days.
My wife studied abroad in Italy and recommends Positano on the Amalfi Coast. I never made it that far down but did enjoy Sorrento and Capri. All of those are beach-centric and could be hot depending on time of year you go. Spring shouldn't be too bad.
You might look into Sienna. It is big enough to keep you busy for a few days but didn't have the huge city feel of Rome/Florence/Naples. It is also centrally located in Tuscany to allow for day trips.
Italy has just about everything so it will depend on what you and your family like to do (history, food, art, wine, hike, lounge, etc.). It might be too far for your trip, but I would recommend looking into the lake district or mountains in the North. Check out Bolzano to see if it interests you.

Was looking hard at Sienna and some places around it. Three nights in Rome when we first get there and one night there before flying back. We’ll be in Rome for Easter Sunday, I put in a request for the papal mass in St Peters, figured that’s a once in a lifetime sort of thing, esp w the American pope.

Amalfi Coast is pretty special and several nice towns to spend time in. Also, Pompeii is close and is unbelievable. Our grandkids loved it last year.
Another idea is Bergamo/Lake Como.
Florence is fantastic due to museums
Siena/Tuscany a good option

This might be a bit far from Rome, but Verona was great. We had been in Venice (I know it is what it is, but I wouldnt go back), then took the train to Verona. Is where Juliet's house is - would be a 'condo' today - which is right off a very quaint town center square. Adults and kids like seeing it, and might get the kids into Shakespeare. A laid back vibe in town. If you want coast, it's a no-go, and my guess is that there would need to be something between there and Rome to break up the trip, but it is a good experience of Italy away from tons of tourists. It gets tourists, but is overshadowed by go-to places.

But if they are in tow, just do the majors - Rome, Florence. And maybe Lake Garda with its multiple theme parks.

I honestly wouldn’t recommend 4 nights in any city. 4 nights in Rome is a lot! Not that I didn’t like Rome but you can see the Vatican and other things in a day, the coliseum plus whatever else you want in a day, so two full days in Rome (3 nights) is plenty. I did go to a great restaurant there I wood recommend highly, I had a whole sea bass for two bc wife wanted a steak but man was it amazing.
The trip was Milan for one night and 2 days, then a train to Venice for three nights, one of those days we went to Verona and it is a chill small town w a coliseum (built before the one in Rome) and gorgeous wineries close by. Then we went to Rome for 3 nights but basically 2 full days. I really enjoyed Venice but it is custy like Myrtle beach. When I went it was 2021 winter so covid was a huge thing, Venice was deserted and I got to know the city very well. I could right now lead you around Venice.
Honestly if you have a Costco membership look at Costco travel. You get to pick the cities you want, you pick when your trains leave, you pick your hotels you can upgrade to. The best brunch buffet I ever had was in Milan on a Sunday.
Tmale me for any info you want. I’ll ask the wife what the restaurant was in Rome bc it was really good and they had an amazing wine selection. It was not custy, the servers barely spoke English.
I just hate tourist places to eat, I prefer the local spots. This one spot in Verona was amazing for lunch! Also went and saw Juliet’s house there.

Insanely walkable with streets far less congested than Rome. Awesome walking/biking around the wall of the city. Just beautiful.
We also did Siena. Bigger than Lucca, but still great. If you can time it around the Palio (or mid-point when they do the selections but not the actual race), it's wild (not like bacchanalia, just really unique).

Use some of that doctor money for a private tour guide in Rome.

It's well well well well worth the money. We skipped hours worth of lines at the Vatican because we went in with tour guide.
When we were in Rome, we also did a day trip to Castilli Romani, which was great to get out of the city. Also guided by a private tour dude.

where it is well, well worth it. If you can get a tour of the catacombs under the Vatican (below the basement where some of the Popes are buries) I recommend it.
