Clemson is a Secular State School

On the topic of alcohol sales, “family atmosphere” etc it is importantly to note that Clemson is a secular state school, and it has always been a public universities without any kind of religious affiliation.

People act like Clemson is just like Bob Jones or Liberty in terms of culture and that is simply not true. Our legendary football coach is a devoutly religious man and he instills a lot of his faith in his football program but that in no way makes Clemson a religiously affiliated school!

Alcohol has been a part of campus social life for more than 50 years and drinking in some form or fashion already occurs at most every athletic event.

Clemson is not too pure for the world…Clemson is of the world and it is time we join it with alcohol sales at athletic events!

We consume alcohol in the parking lot b/4 and after..

Thus no sales in the stadium are needed especially while the blood runneth Orange.

It is secular as you stated but in the secular way to make $..now to pay for players to play ball.

Seems they are getting paid pretty dang good already in other ways and more $ are coming this year..

So why sell & drink beer in the stadium after 80+ years of not needing to.

LBB are you saying in all your years that you have never seen someone with a flask at DV, Little John or DKS?

I’m sure, I’ve been to a lot fewer games than you but I have seen it at almost everyone. People drink in the stadiums, it is just not sold to them….the school might as well get some of that revenue because people are drinking in the stadiums anyway!

This is a lame argument. Most people who sneak liquor into the stadium will continue to do so if beer is sold in the stadium. Either because they don’t want to pay high prices for beer or because they prefer liquor. There will be a lot of people like myself who tend to follow rules and don’t drink inside the stadium who will drink beer in the stadium if it is allowed. I really don’t care if they sell beer or not, but some of the arguments put forth here are just nonsensical.

Some schools sell liquor in the club seats. They have bars. Some other schools have it to where if you’re in club or higher, you bring your liquor in before the season starts and then a server unlocks your locker and makes your drinks with it and then puts it back in your locker.

Right on the money, as usual, Rhett. I don't know that I have any philosophical reason for or against, but rather it seems like we have done OK for the past 100 years or so without it. Some change is good, but I see this as neither a change for the worse or better, so why do it. If anything, I would guess it would be for the worse. Honestly, I don't see it having any effect on those who like to get snockered at football games anyway. If it is strictly for more revenue, then I say find another source.

Some people will still smuggle in their own because they don't want to pay stadium prices. The Atlanta stadium has plenty of alcohol options, but my daughter came home from that game with tales of Dawgs who had their beverages in ziploc bags to get past security.

I'll confess to doing the same with M&M's, but that doesn't get too messy if the ziploc fails.

Certainly seems like the intelligent thing to do; especially in light of the fact that we know for certain that the consumption of alcohol kills brain cells and causes cancer. Let's do all we can do to shorten the lives of our fans, and position them to be arrested, or killed, for drunk driving as they leave the games. I mean, hey, we've got plenty more fans. We won't miss the few that the alcohol will kill! (Sarcasm much) You must be a Democrat! It's not a matter of moral conviction. It's a matter of common sense and liability! You bring it, and you consume it, and you get killed; Clemson University has no liability. Clemson University provides it, and doesn't "police it" (and there's no way they can), and Clemson University is liable. Why? Go Tigers!

Totally agree. I’ve been to most ACC schools for football, drank beer in their stadiums and never saw fan bases getting out of hand. I did see security, just like at Clemson games, so I’m not sure why the naysayers think Clemson will be the exception? I say enhance the experience for the paying customer, respect the fan base (we are not in China or Russia) and make the needed $$$.

I was at the Wake game. Two Clemson fans, one older and the other younger, had too much to drink in the stadium. Both fell in the stands. Traveling to bowl and playoff games, I always see some fans that drank too much in the stadium.

Yes, I know people bring it in, but I'd rather it not be sold. With that said, I think it is only a matter of time before it happens and to me, it is simply revenue based.

I go to watch the football game and not to drink. I sit in a great section. Yes, you can call security, but right now, it isn't something that I think about.

Ah, the 50s, a time when...

- White males were in such control that women weren't supposed to work and when they did, they made 40% less than males.

- A time when the Good Old Days Syndrome meant pre-Civil War times, e.g. - Daughters of the Confederacy erecting monuments of Civil War leaders.

- A time when schools, busses, neighborhoods, public facilities, and even water fountains were segregated.

- A time when people of color would get beaten and/or arrested if they tried to venture out of their neighborhood.

- A time when smallpox was still around.

- A time when 33,000+ Americans died in the Korean War.

- A time when East Germany was idolizing communism.

- A time when Russians were pining for Stalin (recently revived by Putin, one of the puppet masters for your leader now).

Time to wake up, people.

It’s great to see Clemson keeping up with the times and enhance the game day experience for a majority of fans who pay a lot of money but are treated like children. I believe the naysayers have an irrational fear of loosing the “family environment” once beer sales start, but if the family environment exists during the tailgate (with most consuming plenty of alcohol). How does it disappear upon entering the stadium? The naysayers don’t give Clemson fans any credit. I believe the alcohol consumption will be moderated with fans not getting “over served” prior to entering DV or having to run out and slam a few at half time. I’m thinking beer sales will actually minimize drunken behavior and of course make a few million sorely needed dollars on top of trusting beer drinkers to act like the Clemson Men and Women we are.

I don't really care if people drink... responsibly, but here is why I'm against selling beer in the stadium.

Back in the late 60's or early 70's, my father, mother, and I (around 10yrs old) attended an Atlanta Braves game. Behind us sat 4 men who began drinking immediately. After several innings and several beers, it was one of the men's turn to get up and go get the beer. When he returned, he proceeded to dump all of the beer over himself and on the three of us in front of him and he thought it was very funny. I admire my dad because it took all he had, but he restrained himself from beating the crap out of that guy. Things like this should not happen to people who come out and pay money to enjoy a game. My father never again attended a Braves game. You might be able to see where I can only see the downside to this situation.

Now I'm sure people will say that the vendors will be responsible and not sell to those who have had too many. A drunk can always find someone to get his drink. I know, I've been there.

That's just my opinion.

Everything is not related to religion. Clemson has a reputation for treating opposing teams and fans graciously. Just last year, recruits and their families talked about the great atmosphere at DKS. I worry about that changing if people get drunk inside the facilities. Hopefully, there will be a limit on how many beers a person can buy.
