According to ESPN 2017 ALABAMA was number #1 defense of all time and 2017 Clemson was #34 and we beat them for the Natty.... How can the best Defense of all time not win it all? Doesn't defense win championships?

to defenses of the past who had to deal mainly with line up run the ball I formation type stuff and the option is crazy..thats why i think the best of all time lists are stupid..should be a list for pre hurry up no huddle era vs the hurry up no huddle era that we are in now

Let me tell you like this, If Jesus, and a dozen of his most valued Angels that played college, and pro FB before before entering the gates Heaven. If they were to come back down to earth, and go on ESECPN to talk about the best college FB defense they had witnessed from Heaven, and if they said that Clemson has had several top 5 defenses for all time, the host of ESECPN would argue with Jesus, and all 12 of his most valued FB knowledgeable Angels that Clemson has never had any better than the 34th ranked defense, ever. And Fineturd would probably tell Jesus, and his dozen Angels that they didn't know jack chit about FB if they believed Clemson has ever had a better than a 34th ranked defense, and he would probably them that 34th was stretching it bc Clemson has an ACC defense where the players were slower, weaker, shorter, and dumber!!!

Year we had KB at QB and lost to them in the Sugar Bowl. End of 2018 season is when we crushed them. My question is how come the 2018 team isn’t recognized as that D was stacked!!!

Because they dominated so bad they didn’t play past halftime and the 2nd, 3rd, 4th teams gave up some cheap points and yards that year.

Clemson had a great defense in 1990 too. I would have guessed we'd see more Tiger entries on such a list.

Absolutely! The 1990 defense would just flat abuse you. The 1981 defense was pretty stout too. This analysis is so pathetic in not realizing the reasons the 2017 D had great numbers was because KB couldn’t run the offense at full speed so we played more cautious and shortened games similar to 2014. When the offense was high flying the D was on the field more and gave many more scoring chances to the other team.

The 1981 Tiger Defense could stop anybody. The Tiger Ds of the late '80s-early '90s were incredible. Oh, and how about the Power Rangers of 2018 that made 'Bammer's offense look ordinary in the Natty?

Amazing the 2014 defense that led the nation in 11 categories, did not make this list. I would have put this defense up against any on the list. In fact this list has no credence without this Defense listed at worst top 3.

The best overall I’ve seen. They played the whole game all season. Also supports the true time some of our other ds starters were not playing in 2017 and 2018 should get more respect on this list

Hard to put them in any order, but 1981, 1990, 2014 and 2018 are my picks as the best Clemson D’s of all time.
Recent bias, but the 2018 team with how the Rangers came back that year (instead of opting for the NFL), first modern team to go 15-0, and the fact they held Bama to 16 points who, let’s not forget, before that game were literally being called the greatest offense and team ever, gets my vote as possibly the greatest ever in college fb. Hard to really pick a #1. Certainly, many would agree, the best D line ever.
Screw stats. That D stops everyone. They stepped up in big games.
We have that D against LSU in ‘20, game over….

Hard to compare to 1981 and 1990.
But 2014 was better than 2017 and 2018 in my opinion.
