This is how a lot of people grew up in rural SC. Having to work hard to put yourself into a better position can be very rewarding. Call me old school but I believe it builds better character than always getting what you want with Daddy’s money.

i had to put myself through college

because i didnt have a choice. my parents were high school drops out and couldn't afford to to pay any of my bills. I agree there are benefits to be had but i'm not going to put my kids through that.

Same here. Grew up in a rural part of the Lowcountry in pretty humble circumstances. My dad worked at the shipyard in Charleston for over 30 years but had to retire early for health reasons. He tried to pay for my college but the early retirement made him come up short so he paid for part and I took out loans for the rest. I did pay for my kids’ college but didn’t buy them cars when they were in high school and they didn’t have TVs in their bedrooms and all that stuff. They learned that they had to work for a lot of the things they wanted. Both had jobs in high school and college to make their own spending money and are out doing fine on their own today. They didn’t have to come from where I did but I wasn’t going to spoil them either.

Kids today wouldn't believe how recently lots of folks in SC lived without electricity or running water in their homes. I'm only 53, but I knew lots of older people when I was growing up who didn't have either when they were young.

My kids don't even believe that we didn't have internet when I was at Clemson. What if I told them I had never owned a computer when I was their age, or even touched one till I went into the Martin computer lab? I guess they'd think I was jerking their chains.

We've come a long way in a lot of areas...but there are still lots of families in SC living in what most would consider substandard housing.

It was a different time. I am 62 but remember visiting my grandparents house when I was about 6 years old. At that time they lived in rural Edgefield county. They didn't have running water and used a well.
I remember pulling up the well bucket of water and there was a frog in it. I wouldn't
drink the water. Never forget it.

I am not sure who lives there today. The date says that the picture is current, so I will just gp with that.

I look at that house and I see,
-Neatly managed yard
-clean house around the edges
-I am betting it is very clean inside
-that house has been repaired many times, don't think they could pay at one time to remodel, but I am willing to bet it doesn't leak inside.
- when they had growth in the family they did have to add on, maybe a bath or room for a washer dryer on the corner.

I see pride in ownership, and do not think it is a rental now. For about 10K if I am right , that house could be made to look very nice.
