New Story: Transfers show Clemson a victim of its own success

Transfers show Clemson a victim of its own success

I woke up Friday morning to a text telling me that defensive tackle Scott Pagano spoke with the Clemson coaches Thursday and made the decision to transfer to another school. The first though that popped into my head? Success claims another one.

Losing Scott will take a little bit away from our depth on the line. But even though the tide goes out the ocean is still deep!

OK now, that's a profound quote. In fact so good that I've been googling it and can't find it anywhere. Is that an original line or did you borrow it, Are you a writer?

P.S. I'm not being sarcastic.

I think that the coaches do a great job of getting all these players like Pagano into games. At most schools, playing behind a Wilkins,Lawrence etc, he would get little playing time. That is how you develop depth and depth wins championships! Good luck Mr. Pagano. Any interest that you get from the NFL will be because of your time in Tigertown.

The best players want to play at the next level. They don't necessarily love the school or the colors the way we do.

Hate to see these guys go, but it's the way it is.

At least Dabo doesn't make players cry on signing day (talking about you little Nikki).

Hopefully a similar type player, but Pinckney was rated higher coming out of high school.

Rivals ranked Pinckney as the 16th best DT in the nation - number 196 overall.

Rivals didn't rank Jarrett in the top 300.

I love Clemson. But I received my masters degree elsewhere. In addition to his diploma he leaves with rings for a national championship, major bowl wins and two ACC championships.

Clemson has become a warehouse of NFL talent, and has made these guys more than in our pass think about playing in the NFL more than anytime in our history bc they can get there from Clemson more now than anytime in our history. And this was Dabo's plan when he got the job as HC at Clemson, and he knew when Clemson FB became a one of college FB power house teams, that we would see better players than we had back then leave Clemson for more playing time. Those players that are leaving held down a spot until someone better come along to take it over. I'm OK with that, bc someone better did take over. HS recruits are getting better and better, and that better will be trying to take the job from an already great player. It won't be over 30 years before we win another National Championship bc we are recruiting championship players!!!

If he would have left before signing day we could have used it but remember he was one of the very few seniors we had on this team. If we used it this year then next year would have been one less and next year will be a small class. If no one leaves early we will have about 9 spots open and Pagano was one of them so in reality it does not matter, other than the fact I wish he had stayed.

Re: New Story: Transfers show Clemson a victim of its own success

Victim: .....a person who is cheated, fooled, or hurt by another....(Merriam-Webster)

It's a ridiculous notion that Clemson Football is a "victim" of any of these kids (some who have graduated) leaving for any reason. When your program is losing kids who were highly recruited at one time because they seek more playing time, it shows the strength of your program and the quality of the players across the board. Hardly a bad thing and certainly not victimized.

DH touched on this in the article, but to use "victim" is not accurate in the least. Come on Tnet writers, you should be better than this. Give us some better content, not just stuff to get clicks.......

He may get a few more snaps, but what great school does he think he can go to for more playing time? What does he think all the big-time recruits do at programs like Bamer? It's better to get 1/2 the snaps at Clemson vs a full load at let's say...BYU where he won't ever be on TV. The NFL combine is where he could have made his mark after next season and a second Natty!
Hate to lose his leadership and toughness.

I have no doubt Wilkins and Lawrence are solid starters.
And Huggins are Pinckney (Robinson) are viable backups.

David Hood...

Feb 19, 2017, 10:15 AM

David Hood, I think there's also another story here (and you may already be on it). With the departure of DW, we obviously lost the undisputed team leader. I don't know the leadership roles these three seniors played on the team but they were all veterans who logged playing time. What does this leave us now? 9 returning seniors? I assume Wilkins will step into DW's team leader role. At the very least we're not just young but also lack team leadership with the early departures and transfers. Who will step into that role? Talent is still there but who will lead and how will it affect the team? I would think that is at the forefront of Dabo's mind.

We ask these same questions every year, and a leader emerges every year. Our coaches know who can be the next great leader, and they will push them to take on a leadership role!!!

Yes some will either transfer or play another position. However it says volumes that all these QB's are signing with Clemson knowing the other talent is coming.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I understand most of these transfers.....

Feb 19, 2017, 11:17 AM

But....I hate to see it. Each one of these guys are part of the reason why I love Clemson Tiger football. Because of that love, I want the team to have the opportunity to be as successful as possible. It is also because of that love that I want these players to be as successful as possible and make it to the NFL if that is their goal.

If they think transferring would be best for them to showcase their talent....the love I have for the players makes me wish them the best. I just hope that the decision ends up being the best for them and that they don't have any regrets.

Good luck to all the transfers!

Re: I understand most of these transfers.....

Feb 19, 2017, 12:07 PM

I want what's best for Clemson and the Players. When a team has the talent that Clemson has, Clemson back ups can make it in the NFL. If the back ups will go in and play like a starter, NFL scouts will notice them as well as a starter....

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

C'mon, he's the 1st DT coming in off the bench

Feb 19, 2017, 2:42 PM

And what happens if #1 or #2 gets banged up during the season or dare I say preseason? Plus, his family lives in Central now. It's nonsensical to think he would not get drafted or have a shot at the NFL if he stays. Plus he claims he "LOOOVES" Clemson...

He was a fan favorite. Call me selfish or whatever you want, but I just don't understand his decision in the least. Personally, I see it as a mistake.

Re: New Story: Transfers show Clemson a victim of its own success

Feb 19, 2017, 3:30 PM

Typically what happened with USC years back and other programs that make it to the top it seems. Other than Alabama.

Of course there is this parity talk as well.

USC also had some coaching changes but if I recall things started slipping away in Pete's last year.

But when you get to a level of recruiting and winning, you can't sign all of the top talent (run out of room or 5 star guys don't want to compete with other 5 star guys) and then the likes of Ortre Smith go to the Coots and then another player goes to the Coots (guys the Coots would never get and wanted to come to Clemson but we ran out of room and had too much talent in front of them) and then a player will end up at UNC or Va Tech and then those programs slowly get better due to our left overs so to speak. Eventually there will be transfers as well and then when you have 5 Stars recruited the year before, the next year it will be tough to sign another 5 star at that position (exception so far is WR for us) and then that guy goes to a program elsewhere. It is tough to stay on top. Alabama is only one I've seen sustain it for so long.

FSU was dominant and Florida was dominant but then Clemson started coming into Florida and getting difference makers in CJ Spiller and Sammy and others. Those stars normally would be at FSU or Florida. But take away just a couple players from each program and that makes a big impact and levels the playing field a bit.

I guess the reason Bama has been so successful is from running guys off. It is about the only way.

Go Tigers
