I know right, saban showed last night that just bc a guy has more experience doesn't give you the best chance to win! Clemson prob should have done that in the sugar bowl and see if HJ could have given a boost to the offense. I really hope they let the best man play bc uga and bama showed just bc you have a good established qb doesn't mean the freshmen or younger guy behind him isn't better and I know it's not always the case but if KB can't improve his downfield throwing we are wasting all of that we talent we have. I love KB but love clemson football more and want the best man out there and if it happens to be KB then hey let's rock n roll but if not then next man up! Go Tigers trust our coaching staff to make the right move this offseason w.e that might be! Go tigers!!

I understand the frustration from this game, however in watching the two of them play I never have thought that Hunter Johnson gave us a better chance to win than Kelly Bryant. I do think he is a better option than Zerrick Cooper. That is not to say that he can’t be the man, he just wasn’t ready to be it this year. The most popular player on any team is the back up QB. If we lose a game then the blame goes on the starter and that the outcome would have been different if the backup had played. Bama would have eaten HJ alive plain and simple.

Truthfully how would we know? HJ never played with the first team, never got the benefit of reps the starting QB got week after week, and was never given a real opportunity to be the man or prove he could be the man. KB did a great job this year but (even though many do not want to admit it) he is limited in his abilities as a QB for the type system we normally run. Everyone, including the coaches, always put forth he knows the playbook and system the best and therefor gives us the best chance to win. Of course he had a better grasp on the playbook and was more confident in it, it was his 3rd year in the system but let’s be realistic here. Do you not think our playbook was limited this year because he in not a good passer period? The whole system was adjusted to make it more run heavy to benefit his skill set because the coaches know he can’t pass consistently. We just didn’t run into a D that could shut down what we do running the ball with KB until Bama, none of the other teams we played had the talent to shut down the run like that.
That will be the case next year as well, only FSU has the talent to potentially shut down our run game in the regular season and that will depend on how well Taggert does next year with the team. That will not be the case when we make the playoffs, there will be a Bama or a UGA or another elite team that has the ability to make us one dimensional. We have to have a QB that has the ability to stretch the field with the intermediate and long balls and keep their D from selling out on the run because they simply don’t believe our QB can beat them with his arm. (Unless we magically find an elite OL full of first round NFL picks for next year)
I’m mot saying any of this to bash on KB because I think he is a great Tiger. He and the team did better this year than I expected., i was and am ecstatic that we won the 3rd straight ACC championship, made the 3rd straight CFP., and won 12 games this year. I just think that will be the ceiling with KB next year as well and perhaps I am greedy but I want more. I want a real chance to win in the CFP every time we make it. Plus he will not make the league as a QB and with his god given athleticism, size, and speed keeping him in a position where we know he won’t make the league is a disservice to him.

What about Syracuse? They had over half a game. In scrimmages they got chances with number one from time to time. The best qb this year was Kelly B.

From the sound of it KB and ZC got most of the first team reps in practice that week. HJ wasn't given a fair shot in that game. If HJ started the whole 2nd half I think we win that game. Instead we watched ZC take most of the snaps and look lost doing so. If HJ was given the opportunity to get into a rhythm he would have won that game for us.

Let me preface by saying that I think the coaches screwed up, because I don’t. But, it is certainly not fair to say Hunter Johnson wouldn’t have made a difference when clearly he could have. The times that he was put in the game and the first string was in there he looked good, however; most of the time he was but in when 3 and 4 string offense line, receivers, Rb etc were in the game

I agree. 'Bama's defense was relentless. Hunter, Kelly, Tucker, Zerrick.....even DW4 all would have trouble generating much facing that kind of sustained pressure. 'Bama's rookie did well last night because his line actually blocked. Clemson's Oline took the evening off last week.

Sometimes folks practice better than they play. Most reports on the QB’s have been qualified by practice performance. Game day presence is almost an undefinable character, but you know it when you see it. Watson definitely had that quality and based on the rapid check downs and quick release, HJ does as well. Still with that said we are fortunate to have one of the best coaching staffs in the country and regardless of who plays I am All In!

HJ’s last game experience consisted of him misreading a blitz and failing to throw the ball to his hot receiver.

You, me and a thousand others have already said this and the end will be the same bc Bama got up this morning as the new National Champions. Talk about my guts grinding from the thought of it is a severe understatement, but it is what it is. Hopefully a lot was learned that we can move forward with bc no fan, no coach, no nothing about sports is perfect, and once we do perfect it, it will become boring. I just want to see us to do our best and keep expecting our best to come forward. Goooo Tiger FB, the best in the world for ME!!!!

So your guts were grinding because in a completely unrelated game a team made a change and that automatically means if we made a change we would have won?
Worrying or stressing over what ifs is a dangerous road my friend, and one that doesn't need to be traveled because there is nothing you can do about it now but move on.

Don't try to put your words in my mouth bc my words were HJ wasn't given the chance to change the out come. Actually HJ may not have made a shred of difference what so ever. What I'm saying and mean is, we will never know bc he didn't get a chance when what we were doing sure as as h&ll wasn't working either. To me personally, that was like trying to start the car knowing it was out of gas, but you keep trying until you kill the D a m n battery. Now if somebody brings you some gas, and nobody has any F-ing jumper cables!!! No efforts were made to fix it before it was to late!!!! So none of it makes a shred of difference bc Bama is again the NC!!!

Coaches did not learn their lesson with Cole Stout in Athens in 2014. Should have started Watson that game. Lost the game.
Still hard headed 4 years later and not willing to make a change at QB when it is necessary.

You do know that Watson became the starter in game 3. It’s not like the coaching staff went all season and then inserted him in the second half of the bowl game. There is more to being the starting QB than just physical talent.

So we should have started Watson and we wouldn't have lost even though the game was tied at 21 at half?
You're also banking on unproven players to come in and magically win a game because it happened somewhere else?
Makes sense.

The coaches have a hard time when there isnt a clear number one. KB did much better than most thought and had a great season. Hunter looks like a better QB even in his limited playing time. It was a good thing to not throw him in there too much this year. HJ will bethe best QB coming out of spring, just like he was clearly the better back-up QB this year...lets hope the coaches figure it out quicker this time, as opposed to waiting for a significant loss to make a change

KB is now the third best QB on the roster -- not going to make it to the CFP with him leading the offense. One or two of these guys will transfer out, start Johnson or Lawrence, put Bryant at slot receiver where you can use his speed and maybe the occasional jet sweep reverse pass. KB isn't the answer no matter how bad he wants to be Cam Newton.

You do realize we made it to the CFP this past year right? Also remind me of what happened when we put in those great backups after KB went down with an injury?
I understand you don’t like KB for whatever reason and think you know more than the coaches but don’t be stupid.

as far as ceiling and ability as a passer, KB might be the 4th or 5th guy on the roster. He was the best option this season because he knew the playbook the best but you can't tell me that HJ wouldn't have performed better than KB in that game had he started all season and developed as a passer. HJ was a 5* for a reason. Being able to make reads pre and post snap are what separates an elite QB from a good QB. HJ might have that elite quality...we know for a fact that KB doesn't.

If you think the Syracuse game was lost because of a backup QB or that the team made the CFP because of its starting QB you are sadly mistaken. The truth is the defense made up for the offense this year (specifically the average QB play). Bryant can run, no question, but he can't throw - that's not an opinion that's fact based on understanding the game. Take advantage of his legs, let him take Ray Ray's place, return punts, be a receiver, or switch to DB. But you don't win National Championships with him at QB.

I tend to agree that KB has the inside track based on his performance this season; however, if Trevor or another QB steps up, KB is still a tremendous value. His athleticism can be used at receiver or D-back. Would this not be a more reasonable spot for his talent in the NFL? Regardless, he certainly won't be on the sidelines.

Did you forget the ACCCG already? He was certainly the answer against Miami.
Kelly Bryant was the best QB this season, but he’s close to his ceiling. Hunter Johnson and Trevor Lawrence are only getting started. They may be better than Bryant, but they haven’t EARNED it yet.

Miami and Alabama are two different animals and it showed. Bryant was good enough to lead the team there, but he couldn't finish. There are some serious holes in Bryant's game. Those holes are exposed against big boy teams like Alabama. No, Miami isn't a big boy team. Miami would get led to slaughter by the likes of Alabama, Georgia or Oklahoma.
Bryant seems to panic in the pocket and makes really poor decisions. He is a one read guy and if that option isn't there, he gets flustered. He doesn't have the calm pocket presence or the moxy that Watson had. Watson would have lead Clemson through a steel wall on sheer will alone. Bryant isn't that kind of leader. That's something you either have or you don't.
Johnson and Lawrence have that "it" factor. I'm not saying that Johnson would have changed the outcome of the Sugar bowl. I can't even say that he would have performed better. I can say that Johnson would have been more of a threat in the vertical aspect of the game for the Tigers.
Sometimes the last option is really your best option. We saw that last night. If you want to win the big showdown, you have to be willing to throw everything you have including a dirty wash bucket if you have to. That's just what Saban was willing to do. That's why Saban wears the crown of coaches.

I agree. I have no faith that the coaches will start anybody but KB.
Did you see the championship game last night? Another example about how far our coaches have to go. Alabama down 2 touchdowns at the half. As it was reported, who changes quarterbacks (a freshman who has played very little the entire year) at halftime of the final game of the season? And wins? This wasn't the buy-a-victory game against Mercer the week before the Iron Bowl, when you're trying to rest your starters. This was the game with everything on the line, and Alabama was down two scores.
Alabama fought back to win thanks to the play of six freshmen on offense, including quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Clemson coaches would never have done this. JH was not playing that bad i thought, at least better than KB. But Saban knew he had to make a change. I really hope the Clemson coaches were watching the game and learned something.

You don’t want to give your QBs a head case by constantly yanking them like Brian Kelly or Steve Spurrier, either.
Until the Sugar Bowl, KB had won every game he had been healthy for. The ACCCG was the best game of his career. I don’t know what more KB could have done to earn the trust of the coaches.

Against an overrated Miami team which was evident in the final score.

Couldn't agree more. Love the job KB did for us this year, but you still have to make throws to win in the playoff.
Jalen Hurts was 0-2 in championship games because he couldn't make throws.
I'm not hanging the Alabama loss on KB, but had he been able to connect on just a few more throws....
Next year should be epic. Just off this year, what's coming back, and the talent coming in?
You have to think that Alabama & Clemson are favored to make the playoff. Georgia will be tough, but unless they are a close loss in the SEC championship game, the committee won't have 2 teams from the same conference again.
We will be heavy favorites to win the ACC. Georgia & Alabama battle for the SEC. OSU, Penn State, and maybe Michigan (w/ Shea Patterson) from Big 10. Who else?

I agree with you that coaches can be stubborn and play it safe way too long. KB wasn't able to breath after the snap. He didn't have time to make even one read. I believe DW or any QB would have had equal troubles in that game. QB play wasn't our biggest problem!

Best is a general term that the coachest use to determine their starters. The truth is that players may be best at some of the skills, but not others. Knowing the playbook is important, but so is passing accuracy, ability to read a D, improvise and throw on the move, agility to break tackles, and more. How do you grade all that? Are some weighted more?
Comparing last night's game with our game vs bama is misleading at best. We were killed at the point of attack, no running game, no time for mid to long passes, etc. GA's Fromm was effective and nearly beat bama, but a couple of Freshman mistakes cost the dogs.
Best may be the standard, but best is not static and hard to measure.

Fromm was rattled at the end. Alabama got fired back up and had him running for his life towards the end. Alabama looked tired and resigned for a little while but when they changed qbs and he made a couple of good throws and a td that defense found new life

I hope someone learned from the natty.
When something has not worked by halftime and you are behind it MAY be time to reexamine your strategy. Someone who can pass and get you back in the game MIGHT just work----even if he is a freshman!

what is truly mind boggling is how clemson ever won 40 games in 3 years with the band of idiots we have running the program. dont you agree. if only they would listen to the goobers on a website we would never lose a game. the coaches are afterall only with the team 100% of the time. how does that qualify them into making decisions like playing time and such.

Maybe they will cross-train them as a Safety or the OL.

Good. You don’t recruit 5* and expect them to sit and watch. KB did us great this year, but that was probably his window. Saying these guys aren’t ready isn’t good enough. You gotta get them ready. Coach em up and let’s go get it back.

I like the idea of finding another position for KB if there is a better alternative at QB. He's a great runner, knows the playbook, and would always be a threat in the wildcat. If he can catch and block that opens lots of windows. This should be an interesting spring for sure.

Learn from the best, and that’s what Saban is. I was praying that all our coaches were in a room watching the man work. He was not scared to pull the trigger. (Remember the 2016 Natty onside kick?) Go with the talent. I love Dabo. Love the man. But I know for a FACT Dabo would not have made that switch last night. GO TIGERS!

With Van Smith gone I'd really REALLY love to see Kelly Bryant play Safety with Isaiah Simmons. That would give us 2 6'2 corners in Mullen and Terrell with Fields there for the slot. And 2 6'3+ safeties over the top with Muse coming in to play Dorian's backer position. Speed and size for days would be a terror for other offenses.

David what style of offense are we running next year? The one which fits only Bryant or the one that Watson ran and fits the other qbs style? I remember Dabo and the Watson Stoudt situation. Bryant is much better than Stoudt but his inconsistency on the longer passing routes is obvious. Alabama capitalized on that fact. I expect Lawrence or Johnson to earn that starting job and not be blocked by loyalty to upper class men. Look what a freshman did for Alabama last night.

I do hope it's true. I want the one who performs best on the field in our games to be the guy in the huddle. Hopefully we have done the good work of separating out leaders and character prior to signing. Punish if they mess up, but let's always put the best players on the field.
