Instead you describe actions.
For instance journalists don't refer to someone with schizophrenia as a schizophrenic. We may do that some in everyday language but it's not the standard for journalism because a person is more than an illness.
Likewise a person who crosses the border without authorization is more than just the action of crossing the border illegally.
Labeling the person often sounds like an emotional and negative assessment of the person's value as a person. And I think that's true here as well.
