The problem with the 8 team playoff is it would bankrupt the fan base. The money for the CFP is coming from TV but a large part of the money for the teams is from ticket sales. I doubt too many folks could pay for 3 rounds of tickets at $475, $250 (I think) and probably $150-$175.
Would you host the 1st round games at the home stadium of the higher seeded team? If so, how would you split the money if 1 stadium held 100k and the other held 50k?
The other thing that isn't being considered...is it fair to ask 18-23 year olds to play 3 elite level games back to back to back? If we are really concerned with player safety, 3 progressively tougher games, after a 13 game season, would be too much.
The better system would be to treat the conference championship games as the quarter finals. You have to win that to be considered for the 4 team playoff. If you aren't the best team in your conference/division, you aren't the best team in the country.

1. Shorten the regular season to 11 games
2. No Conference Championship games
3. Round 1 (8 teams)
4. Round 2 (4 teams)
5. Finals (2 teams)
This way the teams that get to the finals play 14 games, Round 2- 13 games, Round 1- 12 games.
The current season is 13 games for teams that play in a conference championship.

teams can play in a post-season is pretty much a non-starter. Doesn't matter that they could be gimme games - too much $$ affecting too many programs to cut back the regular season today.

You can drop 2 $50 tickets (Citadel and Kent State) for 1 ND/Auburn etc $100 game.
That would force more teams to play more comparable games so that the "eye test" is more objective.

Then you're also penalizing teams like Kent State and the Citadel that play teams like Clemson for a big paycheck to help fund their athletics which gives non-D1 caliber players a chance to play on a big stage near family (in instances of in state schools).
If every team scheduled two good OOC games and two cupcakes (like Clemson) then the system isn't diluted.

there's no way that the big boys will continue to subsidize the smallers. Might be when conferences eventually blow up and teams like Vandy, Kansas, WFU etc decide that they can't keep up in the arms race. Then we will just have a 64 teams playing in 8 conferences. Winners advance to a playoff. Almost like a mini-NFL.
But yes, if every school that played 8 conference games followed the Clemson scheduling model, then it would be easier.

I say treat the game just like another home game. Let the home team make the money as a reward for being one of the top 4. I would also say that the top 4 had to be conference champs that way the sec would not get 2 or 3 home games that are extra. If you play it like a regular home game ticket prices should be less than 100 each if for once they would take the fans into consideration but that will not happen because they are all money hungry. I will say that it cost me less to see the Acc championship game than it does to attend a game against Citadel in death valley and that is great for attendance at the game.
Either drop the conference championships or one game from the regular season.

Auburn made money off us going to Auburn. We made money from Auburn coming to Clemson.
You'd have to figure out some revenue share or the visiting team would actually lose money by playing in the 1st round.

I think a lot of our fans are already bankrupt after the past two years. How long can people do this (go to two bowl games) year after year if we keep this up?

I think we keep the four team playoff system and instead of going to an 8 team playoff system, get rid of what’s become cupcake week and have schools schedule out of conference opponents. I think adding more games would be harsh on players and fans couldn’t afford it anyway.

Again, you'd be penalizing the cupcakes that get a large paycheck for the butt-whooping, as well as getting backups vital experience and actual game film to learn from.

How about a 6-team playoff that includes the 5 power conference champs and one wildcard as determined via committee. The wildcard would be either Notre Dame, the best of the Group of 5 champs, or a non-conference champion from the power 5. The committee would also determine seeding.
This year would look like:
1st round byes: #1 Clemson, #2 Oklahoma
1st round (Play Dec 9th at higher seed stadium): #6 USC vs. #3 Georgia, #5 Ohio State vs. #4 Alabama
2nd round: Highest seeded winner vs. #2 Oklahoma in Rose, Lowest seeded winner vs. #1 Clemson in Sugar
