Modern Car Reliability

Time to upgrade wife's car and need something reliable to get us to and from Clemson games for many years. She wants a crossover SUV. Everything in the 3-4 year old range looks like it has a turbo, CVT, or both. Afraid of having costly problems with such things. Has anyone here gotten over 200K miles out of a turbo and/or CVT with no problem or less than 100K miles before the whole thing was trash? What make/model?

Stay away from the CVT, IMO. Bought a Rogue with one and transmission died on the interstate just barely over 100k miles. Never again for me.

I did a bit of research on CVTs when my kids got their cars - 2016 and 2019 Corollas. The real problem CVTs were Nissan; apparently their supplier didn't quite have things figured out. Toyota and Honda use a different supplier and I don't think there have been significant issues. I would follow the recommended maintenence on them.
As for turbos: Again, it may be hard to avoid them, but I know they are more reliable then they were back in the day. HOWEVER, Mazda did (or does) have a problem with their turbo overheating and cracking an adjacent engine component (valve covers?) on one of their SUVs. You might wanna research that on Mazda forums.

The Rav4 has a CVT. Haven’t seen problems with it on my daughters car. Reliance on the parking brake always gives me pause. I had a turbo on a ‘05 Subaru. Never again. We just bought a new Cadillac XT5. They are moving that platform to a 4 cylinder turbo, but we were able to still get a V6 on an option package. Had a 2020 XT5 and liked it alot, so made the update before Cadillac goes completely EV.

Check out used Mazda CX-5's. Nice crossover with better cargo space than similar styles, and they don't use CVT transmissions. Safety features are pretty solid for toting around the Mrs.

Owned his own business for 30+ years. Here is the advice he gave me about 7 years ago.
1. Stay away from CVT. He sees way too many of them in his shop. (I was seriously thinking about buying a Nissan Rogue.)
2. His advice to me was to buy either a Honda or a Toyota. Said they were easily the most reliable cars on the market. Here are a few of his quips about them: Mechanics hate Hondas and Toyotas. They never break down. You may do something and kill one, but they won't die of old age.
Personal testimony. My wife and I only owned Toyotas from 1975 to around 1992. We switched to Hondas then because Toyota quit making a Corolla station wagon. Since then we have owned 2 C-RVs and 2 Accords. I loved my Toyotas, and I love my Hondas. Right now our "new car" is a C-RV with 120,000 miles on it. Our "old car" is a 2006 Accord with 170,000 miles on it. Both are running well. We have no intention of replacing either of them.

I work for a turbo OEM. Turbocharger technology is a mature technology which is common on many/most vehicles for a good reason. I have a hundred K on a 2014 model with no issues as they should last the life of the engine assuming standard maintenance. CVT is common on Toyota and Honda with few issues. Some don’t like how they operate but has zero to do with reliability. Not sure of your budget but a midsize Acura or Lexus SUV a few years old is a great ride and decent deal. I like the site www.cargurus.com for searching and the US News site for checking reliability on a specific make/year/model

Agree turbos are pretty reliable at this point. I think the problem for a lot of people is they require more “standard maintenance” than NA motors.

I had a turbo and never again

For one, they add stress to the engine. They are hard on EGR valves and to get replace one, you need to take the turbo out. And of course there is the intercooler which typically sits right on top of the engine.
My current vehicle is an Acura RDX. It’s 6 cylinder engine outperforms and gets better gas mileage than the newer ones with turbo 4s. You can do tricks with a v6 that you can’t with a turbo4 - like shutting off one cylinder bank when not needed.
The only car company I would trust with a turbo is Porsche. And even then the engine compartment gets quite crowded which means more expensive repairs.

Wait a few months if you can, car sales dropped +18% and repo's increased +20% this quarter. The car market is going to be making a correction. Unfortunately, manufacturing is going to Mexico, equating to about a 30% savings on building automobiles for manufacturers. If I had to buy right now I would be looking for a good used car... Avg interest rate on a new vehicle is around 11% if I'm not mistaken.

You can get Mazda SUVs that are non-turbo and non-CVT, such as a 2021 Mazda CX-5. Back in the summer I got a 2018 Ford Escape that's non-turbo and non-CVT. If you get an Escape from that generation make sure you get the base S trim because the non-S trims have a turbo and the engines can develop a coolant intrusion issue that destroys the engine.

If you can find one with less than half a million miles on it you're probably good for another 300K.
A 90s model Honda is also a long lived critter along with the small block Chevy from the '60 and the Dodge slant six of that era.
New cars are like coffee makers. Two or three years you dispose of them so they won't burn your house down.

I bought anF150 2023 that has the 3.5 eco boost engine. I love the truck. I got the Lariat model with a big scree. It has the cruise control that is almost self driving, you have to keep you hands on the steering wheel. It will slow down in traffic if another car gets too close. Anyway, the 3.5 engine is considered one of the best engines ever made. It accelerates the truck in a surprising way.you should drive one to experience what I am talking about.
