If you are a blue chip defensive lineman, why would you go to Georgia when they have already received 5+ DL pledges, and are still stacked from the previous year’s recruiting class? I understand if a lifelong fan or dream school, but there is a significant chance of being buried on the depth chart. The road to the NFL starts with playing time.

$$$$$ And it keeps them from going to the competition. Sad waste. Most won't see playing time.

At Clemson, you can NOT get paid, and still not see the field .. see RB rotation***

You will see some hit the portal come spring after they get an idea of where they will fall on the depth chart.

UGA has lost under utilized DL players to the portal that became super stars elsewhere.
Jermaine Johnson (transferred to FSU for his Jr. year) comes to mind. J.Johnson racked up double digit sacks for the Noles in 2021 and went in the NFL first round in the 2022 draft.

Now, we ain't deep enough, IMO. There is too huge a drop off from starters to reserves. That needs to change so that we can substitute freely with very little, if any, drop off in performance.

Money and pride. Once a player realizes they aren’t going to receive significant playing time, they’ll transfer.

Most of our kids are from Georgia. It's an honor to play for the flagship school in a great football state. That's why we recruit so well, including DL group. South Carolina has terrible high school sports; pee wee league compared to Georgia. That's where Clemson needs to focus their attention.
