It's not worth worrying about the linebacker core when we

Aug 16, 2015, 1:14 PM

have such a good secondary behind it. I for one don't think it will be very easy to throw the football against our defense because of how experienced and large and skilled our secondary players including cornerbacks and safeties are I'm looking forward to seeing how well they perform and it should more than make up for some questions about depth in the linebacker core.

WE TOO DEEP.

I just don't want to see us look like swiss cheese against the run, allowing teams to sustain long drives.

You rely on linebackers in defending the run, not so much the secondary. And teams do run, and if you can't stop it, they'll keep doing it. The ones left are really good, just need them to stay healthy. You can't judge the secondary or expect them in the least bit to make up for linebackers, linebackers have a very important job.

Jayron Kearse and Alexander are aggressive and like to tackle, but it's not a good sign if they are making a lot of open field tackles

are we talking the vaunted 3-1-7 defense?

If I'm being cynical, this seems like coachspeak to me. We're fine at LB.

Right now we've got, as proven commodities, Goodson, Boulware, O'Daniel, and Blanks. You know what you're getting with Goodson - a meat-and-potatoes, A-to-C-gap run stuffer. He ain't sexy but he's solid. Boulware and O'Daniel will be vying for All-ACC honors; Blanks had two knee surgeries but he's healthy according to most everyone and he was a freshman All-American. Jalen Williams is getting everybody's attention, and Chad Smith was an early-enrollee high-end 4 - almost a 5-star - who could have written his ticket to any college in the country. Kendall Joseph might as well have been in Witness Protection, coming from Belton, SC, but he was one of those local camp guys we knew everything about; from a bigger school, with more recruiting pub, he likely would have been a 4-star guy. And of course, we have everybody's recruiting favs, the Davis brothers, who have been certified to be upright and vertical and they do indeed have pulses and can do something more than impersonate traffic cones. Allegedly.

So that's nine healthy linebackers on scholarship. A touch thin, granted, especially when you start thinking about special teams, but not exactly what would constitute an "emergency".

Personally I think there's a bit of salesmanship going on there from Venables...maybe for his own benefit, maybe for the benefit of undecided recruits who may or may not be "soft commits" to Clemson. But while the LB position may not be as ridiculously stacked as say, the WR group, or (cough), the defensive tackles - that group is sick, people, and just how sick people don't realize yet - but slapping a Glaring Red Alert on the LB corps is not exactly accurate either.

I guess "thin" is relative.

AGREE!! Brent Venables was talking to recruits! Especially the one who decommited recently

Blanks is a nickel-back, not a linebacker. Any one gets injured or suspended for a (bogus) targeting call against a run-first team we need to use 3 linebackers to stop, and we are likely trotting out a freshman and/or someone with negligible experience. On top of that, Joseph has not been able to practice because of his nagging injuries. It is not a good situation.

You do know that the D line and LB's make life a lot easier on the DB's. Without good play from those two life can be very bad for the DB's
