New Story: Turnovers must be fixed before showdown with Florida State

Turnovers must be fixed before showdown with Florida State

Clemson’s off week came at the perfect time. The players and coaches talked about the upcoming off week even before the N.C. State game, and you could almost feel it early in that contest: This team needed a break. Full Story »

Penalties,

Oct 25, 2016, 7:41 AM

for Louisville(13) and NC State(11) helped a little bit to offset our turnovers, but we won't have the home crowd to help with the penalties this week!

It's also imperative that Jay starts every play

with a snap. Also, our OL has to block on not just running plays, but passing plays, too. Deshaun will need to hand the ball to the running back on running plays and throw it to one of our WRs, or TE, or RB on passing plays. THEN, whoever he throws it to should CATCH it. That's important, too.

And don't get me started on the defense! So much running and tackling must happen on that side, too.

These are opponent-adjusted stats for OLs... Link:

If you notice, Clemson's OL is ranked 8th in rushing and 6th in passing; averaged, they are the best (opponent-adjusted).

Thanks for the link. This is really interesting and a refreshing look at the performance of our offensive line. I've always felt the have to be doing something right, the way we have been moving the ball up and down the field. It isn't the O-line's fault there have been so many turnovers stopping scores.

Seriously?

Did you seriously respond to my post with a serious post about our OL putting up serious stats?

A big TU to you, Sir.

Perfect response to a "Captain Obvious" article. Daniel Shirley usually writes something of value, but this piece was simply regurgitated trifle that has been on TNet all week long.

My goodness - if it is "news" it has to be new...

I am almost to the point that I don't want ball carriers to

fight for extra yards. In other words, once you're wrapped up, go down. If you're a receiver and catch the ball in traffic, just go down. The offense is good enough to overcome the loss of a few "opportunity yards."

I think there is something to this extra effort thing. It's great to try harder! Unlike golf, you can do that in football and it helps you do better. It's also good to spread the ball around, but the guys are competitive, and want to make touches count. I don't know how, or if, you want to decrease 2d effort, even in an attempt to minimize turnovers. The guys understand the importance of this next one, and they know what to correct. I'll bet we'll see a difference!

Re: I am almost to the point that I don't want ball carriers to

Agree...Our HC, staff and players knows that these elements of the game needs to be corrected. You can't over emphasize it to the point the players play tight and robotically vs. loose and instinctive. I know we as fans cannot take many games like L'ville, NCS and the likes but I don't think we will have to this second have of the stretch, if our team plays like we know they are capable of playing. They believe and so do I. Tiger's game! Go Tigers!

That's why I said "almost to the point."***

Agreed with, but at the same time football is all about gaining yards. Most of our guys having been doing this for many years. I would think it would be very hard to just turn it off.

I have a hypothesis

Oct 25, 2016, 10:12 AM

It started with MW7's droppsies early in the season - our guys are trying too hard. We're good. We know we're good. And the pressure of wanting to show out is leading to drops and fumbles. Obviously some fumble have been from strips and knockout blows, but many are from lack of concentration and trying too hard.

As in tennis: Dropped passes = Unforced errors

Oct 25, 2016, 12:20 PM

I believe these are almost as bad as a turnover because it's killed a bunch of drives this year with the, "what if he had caught that one" has occurred many times. Honestly though, as many drops the WRs have had, not many are talking about the 'crooked' throws coming from DW4. He is being hounded on a consistent basis & is rarely getting his feet set, but his throws are more of the Tahj Boyd variety this year: a little low, high, behind, etc. the receivers--not too many dropping into the bread basket as the old saying goes. All this reflects on the O-line despite the related post saying their stats are ranked highly. The 'Hawgs need to be prepared to get down & dirty in Tally this weekend if Tigers are to win because FSU has a ton of raw talent despite some issues of their own...it could be 7-0 versus 0-7 and it would still be a cage match with the Criminoles.
