Is Cagle in this relief role all year?

This didn’t just happen. This is a thought out plan by Rittman and Jamieson. Have your ace available to pitch in every game you play and in every high leverage situation. I don’t hate it. In fact, in situations where I have 5 non-must-win games in 4 days, I actually think this is a great strategy!
I do have to think that this won’t be the case all year. I think she probably starts against Mizzou tomorrow. I definitely don’t see it being useful when we have a mid-week game against USCk or UGA¥ I want Cagle starting those for sure!

She was spent at the end of last season. I think this is a strategy to save her for later in the season. Go Tigers!!!

Plus, McCubbin is coming along nicely. Millie needs to trust her offspeed more and come inside more with the fast ball.

So that we don't end up burning down Cagle by year's end. We know she's a workhorse but can't afford her losing steam late in the season.

It also takes pressure off of the starter. If you have a bad day Cagle can relieve you.

Cagle is in your back pocket in these early games. We have to have more than Val to get us to the promised land.
What a good few games so far.

I'm not sure why he didn't start the freshman against mizz st first game knowing they'd be weaker than liberty. Then mills against liberty and cub against Indiana. Honestly, cub looks better than mills. Something up with her. She didn't pitch particularly well at the end of last season... seems to have peaked. Jmho and it IS just 4 games.
Rittman had to know that mizzou was the toughest team we'd face. Interesting points if that's what in fact the strategy is.
Not to hijack or change your thread, but we seem to have the same hitting problems as the last 2 years. No power past the 4 hole. I'm not impressed with Alex hitting or fielding at ss. Thought for sure we could have either brought in a phenom or have recruited and developed better. Either that or they can't coach what a ss has to be. Her bio on our main page doesn't add up. Wish we'd have gotten one from Washington or Oklahoma. But just 4 games and early observations.

crushing it.
Alex Brown did have some questionable fielding situations. Not just gettin’ eaten up or booting the ball, twice she failed to charge a ball and the runner beat the throw. Her D is something I’ll be critiquing, but I’ll hold off on her offense. Brown hit .399 last year and .434 in league play. She has earned the benefit of the doubt.
As for our power in the bottom of the lineup, I’m sure you’ll agree Logoleo, Moore, and Davis will all hit double-digit HRs by the end of the season, and that’s more pop than most teams’ 5-6-7.

I politely disagree that Cagle was overused last year

and needs to be kept fresh early in the season. She can rest during the Tiger Invitational with the likes of Longwood, Mercer, and Fordham. Against top 25 competition early in the season, I want her pitching every inning she can.
Last season, Cagle through the exact number of innings as FSU’s Kathryn Sandercock, and they don’t even crack the top 25 of innings pitched.
I think back to Cagle’s sophomore year where she threw 12% more innings than last year and still started all 4 games in the Alabama regional. If she was fresh enough then, I think she’s good. Monica Abbott of Tennessee threw double the innings on season as Cagle threw last year; I think she’s good.
Without FSU and VaTech on the schedule, these chances at quality wins early in the season are even more crucial to getting a top-8 seed. Rittman has stated that the WCWS is the goal, and they don’t shy away from talking about it as a team. Well, we need a top-8 seed to increase the chances of obtaining that goal dramatically. To get the top-8 seed, you need quality wins; to get quality wins, we need Cagle taking the ball when she can.

My guess is it less about keeping VC fresh and more about the development of the other pitchers. This will serve us well both down the stretch this year and next year when VC has moved on.

I agree. I think Rittman knows that he has to develop pitchers, not only for this year but in following years. They are not going to get better sitting on the bench watching Valerie.

The score in games we have in hand. Rittman has bigger goals than winning an early season kickoff tourney and he’s gonna need as many reliable arms as possible to get to OKC.

I would imagine it has more to do with playing 5 games in 4 days more than anything.
