He always seemed to do well in practice at Clemson. Then seemed to come unglued during the game. So far he has done well enough to be the starting QB at Oregon State. Wondering if the same things happens there during game time . I hope he does well. He’s made a valiant effort and I admire his tenacity to keep fighting !

I can tell you, he is a bit nervous about DJ particularly after his performance in the Spring game.
Ben Gulbranson and freshman Aidan Chiles are two solid QBs at Oregon State. In fact, Gulbranson started the final eight games for Oregon State last season and led the Beavers to a 7-1 record during that stretch, including a 30-3 victory over Florida in the Las Vegas Bowl.
My co-worker seems to think that DJ will be on a pretty short leash.

deal with a gold buyer. The plane was empty, so the pilot let me sit with him in the cockpit. Turns out he was Oregon state fan, but not an alum. He told me about the time DJ was on one of his flights. When some of the other passengers noticed, they started chanting "BIG BEAVERS RULE!" but DJ didn't join in. The pilot said it was really disappointing and you could hear a pin drop throughout the rest of the flight, even after touchdown and during disembarking. Because of that, he felt like DJ wasn't a good fit for the program and was really worried how that might translate to on-the-field play.

I hope he fails miserably for 2 reasons:
1. The crap he talked this past summer 2. I'm a Clemson fan first. If he succeeds I promise it will be used heavily against us in recruiting.

I agree with your last statement. If DJ miraculously becomes a super passer, they will lay it at the coach's feet and the Clemson program as a whole. Good thing is we are set at QB for a few years.

Yep it will pretty much tell the tale of him having bad QB coaching at Clemson but hopefully that has changed with Garret Reilly going forward at least.

So you think recruits will believe Streeter is the reason he could not hit an open receiver 10 yards from the LOS? Yikes

He embarrassed Clemson football and took us from a top 2 program, to one that NOBODY respects or believes in anymore. It all started the moment he came on campus and then was cemented the day he became starter. It’s never been the same since.

bowlhunter® 2) Give me Cade and Riley every day over DJ and OC at Or. State. DJ may/should improve. DJ is an understated practice & scrimmage guru with high anxiety and yips during the games. IMO a healthy Cade and this season will remove all doubt.

Bowlhunter, I agree with you on your point 2 but the reality is that DJ did not fail because of bad coaching and Clemson should not be blamed for his failures. At worst, it was a bad evaluation on our part to even bring him in. The allure of getting one of the two best QBs out of high school was just too much to ignore.
It was a risk to take a pure pocket passer and try and teach him to adapt to an RPO system. We certainly weren't going to change our offense to fit him so we had to try and help him adjust to our offense. It was a gamble that did not pay off. Now, I think one of two things is going to happen. As he goes back to a system that resembles more of what he ran in High School he could be more comfortable enough to perform better. Again, that reflects more on the offensive scheme and not better or worse coaching. Just a scheme that could be a better fit for what he does well.
If all of his demons are still there then he will fail under that system as well. But, if he starts looking like the QB we thought he could be, then you'd have to say the fit is just simply better for him. Either way, it is not a reflection on Clemson because what fits him best was not the offense we wanted to run and he simply never adapted to what we needed him to be.
My gut tells me, he may perform a little better initially but his challenges between the ears and lack of confidence will come back to haunt him at some point in the season.

SLWCU. Well said. He wasn't the QB for the system Clemson was running. The coaches made a mistake bringing him to Clemson. It happens. I wish him well.

Great post. It is also difficult to measure how much his first game and the No.1 guy against Georgia did to his psyche. The way he was gotten after by the Dawgs defense, mistakes by our receivers, etc. seem to have made him permanently gun shy. If we had won that game, or even if he had a good game, it might have been a different story.
Also the end of the Notre Dame game, the year before when they blitzed him in overtime, pretty much drew up the blueprint how to shake him up and keep him from being effective.

No, because we developed him and thought enough of him to stay loyal to the very end.
Also, we have a new coordinator/QB coach that speaks for himself!

I do find it kind of rich how on the one hand DJ keeps talking about how "simple" and not very creative our offense was compared to what he runs now, but conveniently fails to mention that we had to keep "dumbing down" our playbook for him to something he could actually run without mentally falling apart.

He’ll do better simply because the defenses chasing him now are worse. Oregon State’s oline is quite good also. That said, he still won’t have the year Cade will have and so any “recruiting negativity” will be drowned out by our CFP appearance and possible championship.

Not me other than in passing, no pun intended. No offensive scheme or OC is to blame for DJ throwing balls into the ground or spraying it high and wide to a wide open receiver. No scheme or OC is responsible for pitching the ball to a Pitt defender for a TD.
So DJ was a great practice player under Streeter but sucked in the games. It's on DJ. He just was not accurate or mobile.
I wish him well but am glad he is gone.

My favorite thing about DJ leaving has been hearing Plyler do an about-face. I remember all year last year he stood up for DJU and the decision making/play calling. Basically saying that we were winning, even if winning ugly. So you couldn't knock the results. I've noticed this summer he has been more and more open about saying DJ and the playcalling just wasn't cutting it.

I feel bad for DJ and hope he does well at Oregon State. With 2 decent quarterbacks behind him there I think the coaches agreed to let him start this year but as previously stated he will be on a short leash. If he plays lousy he will be pulled out faster than we ever pulled him out! I place as much blame on the Clemson coaches as I do on DJ for recruiting a player that doesn’t fit our offense and then leaving him in games when he should have been pulled out.

Doesn't fit our offense? DJ was supposed to be a pro style QB. A Pro style QB will suck equally bad in a pro style if he can't hit wide open receivers and if he can't read progressions.

For some reason I watched one series of us against NC State last year on Youtube and that one series pretty much summed up the entire first year. It was "three and out". First play was a run that gained maybe 4 yards. Second play was a little flare pass to Shippley out of the backfield behind the line of scrimmage. The ball was behind Ship, so he had to turn around, lost his momentum, and was tackled for no gain. Had he gotten it in stride there would have been at least a four or five yard gain. On 3rd down a receiver from the left of the formation burst past the line backers across the middle and DJ threw it about 5 yards beyond his reach ...... wide open.

Oregon St is mainly a running team with a need to pass as an option. First, dju has to make a correct read for the run..... we saw how that worked for us..... then hit a receiver when needed...... again, we saw how that worked for us. So...... not very confident that the football career is the best choice.

You are correct. Last year they averaged 40 rushes and 25 passes per game. They have another deep backfield and OL this year so all the tools are there to succeed. It will be interesting to see how DJ performs.
I too believe he should go back and pick up baseball because that is his best chance to become a pro. This year will be a revealing season and probably set the stage for that decision.

I suspect you went to very few practices and would have little tangible information...he had some ok games and the stunk up the whole stadium. Don't think he processed things very well...that's not good for any offense...everyone had figured out how to thwart dj, we would have lost the acc champ game to the tarholes if DJ had stayed! Still wish him well, just not at Clemson!

Sure to be landblasted, but my opinion of DJ is, he was highly overrated, never progressed, and will never progress. He doesn't seem to have the neuroprocessor to make the snap decisions necessary at the college, much less the professional level at quarterback. I believe this will quickly become once again apparent at Oregon State. The difference now is, Oregon State has a proven backup, who they will not hesitate to call upon when DJ fails. So, they better be prepared for some Big Dave backlash.
