our basketball woes extends beyond coaching and into the priority that the AD gives these two programs (men's & women's). Brownell may or may not be the problem, but if we're not funding the program or giving it the priority that we give other programs, we'll not see the results that we have in other programs, no matter who the coach is (or coaches are). Personally, I don't think Brownell has shown the consistency or shows any positive trends worth giving him more money or more time, but success in any program extends beyond that and must start with a strong and consistent commitment from the AD, and for some reason, we've not seen that. Other than the upgrades to Littlejohn, I just haven't seen it.
I feel most sorry for these athletes who come to a school like Clemson, with a strong national reputation for athletic excellence, and who get treated like the stepchild to the other programs. They deserve the same level of commitment - both in funding and in staffing - as football gets and like soccer, baseball, and others see. There's literally no excuse not to. We're in the best basketball league in the nation. We have some of the best athletic facilities in the nation. We're one of the best colleges in the nation. There's absolutely no excuse for us to be this consistently mediocre. None whatsoever. We can change coaches, but without a change in attitude and priority in the AD, nothing will truly change for Clemson basketball.
Not arguing, but specifically, can you tell me how our basketball programs are not being funded compared to other ACC teams? Outside of hiring a big name coach and paying him a ton of money. What would you like to see get done to make it a priority?
I think coaches use to be paid for their recruiting as much as anything in college sports. Going forward, I believe coaches will have less of an effect and NIL will be the dominate factor. College athletics have changed completely in the last 12 months. We are just beginning to see it. Why pay coaches $9MM contracts if the boosters can pay NIL contracts to get recruits to commit. How did A&M just sign the top class in football? Jimbo or NIL?
