I graduated with a double major in English and Religion from Charleston Southern. Minored in Psych.
I work in Technology.
It was a hobby of mine.
You're probably looking for State/Fed jobs in sociology. And that's fine. But don't be afraid of doing something that's not in your major. Getting a degree is not so much about "Did you major in what you're going to do?' so much as it's about doing something difficult that most people don't.
That's not going to make a lot of sense. But, regardless, it's the truth.
Get a job in something that you actually like doing. Or just get a job. Life has a way of directing you that probably doesn't jive with what you'd planned when you were 20 years old. Just roll with it.

Good advice from Fluxus.
Had a friend with a Secondary Ed degree. Never worked a day in a school. Worked his way up in a plant. Now in charge of the plant.

My degree is in Poly Sci. Never worked in that field but thought me how to think. Worked in manufacturing my entire career. Started at the bottom and worked my way up the ladder.
Like the above poster said, get a job doing something you love. Put your heart and soul into it, be willing to make sacrifices, and become the go-to guy/gal. It'll eventually pay off.
Good luck.

Judge, I've always worked for my dad after college and he's retiring at the end of 2018, so I'm gonna have to actually use my degree for something. Just need some good recommendations for jobs and I appreciate any input.

Are areas of business that relate to sociology as well as marketing.
There are a lot of ways to earn a living so start paying attention to everything you see or do or read about, then think about all the businesses that directly or indirectly touch these areas.
I know a guy who sells laundry machines to colleges (only) and makes about $150K a year, some guys drive trucks and pick up outdated pharmaceuticals from CVS, Walgreens, etc and make about $125K.
See the world thru a business opportunity lens and you will be amazed at what is out there.

All my sociology major friends started out with DSS, whether as office workers, case managers, or in food distribution or licensing. Eventually they have ended up with private agencies such as Miracle Hill, or in real estate or banking. Look at local governments, private and public agencies. For example, Greenvillecounty.org lists a couple of full-time positions at the special needs camp and a community center. Even if that's not what you have in mind, reading those very detailed job descriptions may give you other ideas. Good luck!

If you really want to do something related to sociology you probably will need a Masters - if you are thinking of state jobs a very satisfying career in terms of helping people is a psychiatric social worker. You'll need a Masters for that.
Now for me - I came out of college and took a job as a purchasing agent for a wholesale distributor. After a few years of that I moved into sales with them. Then I changed jobs into the technology industry. That's where I spent my entire career - I'm retired now. I moved from sales to sales management and then into global VP sales roles. I was CEO of two companies.
I often said that I used my sociology background more than business background.
My advice is to shoot high - you can achieve far more than you may imagine. Good luck!

I drive a tugboat .
I have absolutely no advice for you , unless sociology or whatevs steers you into the marine transportation field . If so , hit mup on the tmales .
Good luck and think fast , your future may not be what you wanted but it WILL not wait for you to figure that out . .

What did you do for your father?
No offense but this is what bugs be about most of the liberal arts degrees. Few of them have actual destinations, it's just a fancy piece of paper that was quite costly.
The economy is quite good so jobs should be easy to find. I got an engineering degree and have been in construction a few years and do pretty well. Our entry level position "project engineer" makes $60k + good benefits. I work for a general contractor and we don't physically do any of the work. You don't need to be genius or know a ton about construction to get into it. If that sounds interesting to you I would give it a thought. Entry level salary could be a low as 35k a year at some GC's but if you're in a decent sized city you should have some options.

Sounds like you need to ask yourself two critical questions. First what do you like doing that brings a measure of fulfillment? Second who do I know so I can network? Your degrees should point you toward PR, Chamber of Commerce, Communications or some type of public service job as possibilities.
If you earned a graduate degree you could teach. Hope this helps you focus. Update your resume ASAP. Be creative in looking for a job. Above all ask for opportunities.

Look for an industrial HR job. You can work your way up. Get your certification in HR and can move up to Manager at the plant level. Eventually you can get a Corp. Position and make the big bucks.

departments have a lot of people in them with your educational background. HR Generalist is one of the entry level job titles.
You can always add in HR certifications and specializations to your resume as you go along.
Corporate HR or Corporate Communications is a nice goal.

My wife was is a sociology grad that was working her way up in HR before kids came along. Consider HR, and don’t get pregnant.
Also, consider corporate training positions.

Getting a useless degree like sociology back in the day is totally different now.
Get a masters or go back to school and get something useful.

Two more thoughts:
It sounds like you are doing the right thing by starting your search six months before you have to make a move. You may want to take a couple of business classes while you're looking, at least a basic Accounting, Econ, or Marketing. You can do that online or at a tech school/community college if that works best with your schedule, but any of those courses would tell a prospective employer you are motivated to continue learning new job skills.
Also, if you are in SC, the hotel industry is huge not only in Charleston and the Grand Strand, but also in Greenville. You typically have to put in a year or two at the front desk, but then there are all kinds of management & marketing jobs to move into.

It doesn't have to be strictly related to your field of study.
You have an under-graduate degree from a well-respected university.
That alone will get you past the first level of resume selection for about 80% of the jobs out there.
I graduated in Secondary Education with a History concentration and then I had a successful 30+ year career in university administration.
Granted, you won't suddenly get hired in the engineering field with a sociology degree, but you will get attention for a lot of good jobs just because you had the grit to finish college and get your degree.
So, put together a good resume, start looking into the job market, and apply for things that you think you might like to do.
You'll get some interviews, and when you do, you will have to sell yourself.
Good luck!!!

Do you like the outdoors? Land surveying has a great future. Lots of options. You'll need 12 hours of surveying hours with your 4 year degree and 4 years experience but salary could be better than engineer. I've had history majors, biology majors and arts majors as well as architecture and CE majors work for me and go that route.

My son has a sociology degree from Clemson (2011). Started out working in sales. Got an opportunity to work for a company that owns and builds apartment complexes. Began to get to get in on the building side some, and that expanded some because he got along well with people on planning commissions, contractors, etc. Started to pick up certifications in concrete, plumbing, etc., eventually leading to him getting his contractors license. He is now a project manager for a large company that builds and develops residential communities. Makes substantially more than his mom and I ever did as public educators. If you’re smart, willing to work and study, and can get along with people well, you’ll do fine. Best of luck to you!

Go to SavannahRiverNuclearSolutions.com and click on careers. Follow instruction for “Brass Ring”. Periodically check external postings for new exempt, non-exempt and SOP positions. Don’t be afraid to apply for a non-exempt position too. Get your foot in the door. Hundreds of additional opportunities after you get on too. They hire several hundred people every year. Good luck.
