new exercise programs?? Back when I played, we wore a jacket on our arm between innings and immediately after the game to keep the arm warm, even if it was 100' outside. If you were pitching well and had a shutout or no-hitter going, it didn't matter if you had thrown 200 pitches, you were staying in the game. Nowadays, pitchers get to 100 pitches and they get yanked, no matter what. Then they go over to the sideline and begin exercises with all kinds of gizmos, wraps and equipment on their Pitching arm. If they are worried about arm fatigue, why are they exercising their arm? And they never have it covered to keep it warm. I don't understand all I know about the modern game of baseball but it seems like the wusses have taken it over just like most other areas of Western culture.

Tossing 120+ pitches per game and this was way before Tommy John surgery. It’s definitely interesting how pitchers now are treated gingerly when it comes to number of pitches thrown and how many of these guys are still out for 6+ months every other year. The focus on 100+ mph fast balls instead of pinpoint accuracy on changeups and sliders has to be to blame. It’s almost like our joints, tendons and ligaments haven’t evolved at the same pace as our muscles and bones have.

This is exactly what it is. The human body isn’t made to throw the ball 100 mph or throw 95 mph sliders, etc. At least not for prolonged periods of time. That’s why these guys keep having traumatic arm injuries every few years. It’s like a skill position players in football, they’re going to blow out a knee eventually.

Tell Don Drysdale you're replacing him while he has a no Hitter going. Lots of luck with that.

Yep. Pretty accurate. Shoot years ago you complain of a sore arm a day after throwing 7 to 9 innings, coach would tell you to go long toss. Now they shut you down for a month or two.

They throw harder, puts more stress on the arm.

As a result they can't throw as many pitches.

Nolan Ryan was a genetic anomaly; the fact that he never got hurt is beyond comprehension.
