The electricity doesn’t provide the heat, it just ignites the pellets and drives the fan.
If you use an electric charcoal lighter and have a temperature controller on a big green egg or other charcoal cooker you’ve basically got the exact same process. (And if you use lighter fluid, you’re an idiot and I can’t help you)
I use charcoal pellets and wood chips in mine so the combustion chemistry is identical to a regular charcoal offset. If you just use wood pellets the flue gas is identical to a stick burner.
If you’re going to be a purist about it, then you better have nothing fancier than a burn barrel and a hole in the ground with a grate over it or at most a cinder block pit.
If you hate modern convenience, when are you yanking out your furnace and building fireplaces in every room?
Why not get rid of electric lights and hang oil lamps instead.
