enthusiast.Back in the day, meaning way, way back (1950’s) we used car grease with a single line under each eye. The object was to reduce the sun’s glare when catching a fly ball. Originally only outfielders did it but, because it looked cool, infielders started doing it. I was a decent Little League, Pony League, and high school second baseman. I painted my face for every game (looked cool). I cannot recall one play I made only because of it. Okay. Today, even when playing in overcast conditions, or even domed stadiums, most baseball and softball players paint half their faces. Not saying there is not a reason, just asking why.

To help reduce the glare from reflection of light coming from the sun or lights.

And most, not all, wear sunglasses backwards on the back of their head. Again, even raining or a dome. Guess it's just the cool thing to do.

I'd guess anymore it's used more as warpaint than any purpose.

broke Ruth’s record. No arm guard, no ankle guard, no sliding gloves in his back pocket, and no batting gloves. Watch the replay.. He reached down, rubbed some dirt on his hands then took his stance.
