108 Seasons Ago Clemson Football Finished 6-2 in 1917

Clemson returns to a winning season. A 6-2 record certainly beat the 3-6 record from the previous season!

Meanwhile:
Germany sends encoded messages to Mexico to take up arms against the USA if the Americans were to join the war. They promised to return Texas, New Mexico, and California if Mexico would enter into this secret alliance.

Despite Germany’s efforts, the US does join the war in Europe. And Mexico remains a US ally – not a German one.

Germany attempted to persuade Mexico to fight against the US if the US were to enter the war. According to Wikipedia:

“The Zimmermann telegram (or Zimmermann note or Zimmermann cable) was a secret diplomatic communication issued from the German Foreign Office on January 17, 1917, that proposed a military contract between the German Empire and Mexico if the United States entered World War I against Germany. With Germany's aid, Mexico would recover Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. The telegram was intercepted by British intelligence.”

“On April 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson went before a joint session of Congress to request a declaration of war against Germany. Wilson cited Germany’s violation of its pledge to suspend unrestricted submarine warfare in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, as well as its attempts to entice Mexico into an alliance against the United States, as his reasons for declaring war. On April 4, 1917, the U.S. Senate voted in support of the measure to declare war on Germany. The House concurred two days later. The United States later declared war on German ally Austria-Hungary on December 7, 1917.”
