cave. Recently there have been a couple of good threads concerning beers and bourbons that have given me some great ideas on some of the spirits with which I should restock my bar.
Can some of you connoisseurs please give me some advice on rums, vodkas, gins, red wines, etc?

Vodka is simple. Tito’s. Best value and frankly, I prefer it to some of the Watered down high priced options like Grey goose and Belvedere.
Red wine, depends on your pallet. I’m a lover of Cab, Pinot Noir and sometimes Malbec. For cab’s and Pinot, I recommend anything from Columbia Crest. Washington label and an excellent value.
Rum, not much of a rum guy but hard to go wrong with capt.

Myers Rum Dark is a standard bearer, very difficult to beat. Cruzan is a solid mixer too.

If you like Tito's give Western Son a try. 10x distilled (versus 6x for Tito's), also made in TX, but it's about 20% cheaper. It's very good. Probably won't be cheaper than Tito's for long. And, I'm a huge Tito's fan... just recently got turned on to Western Son and figured I throw it out there.

... you should try Deep Eddy's. It's also distilled in Austin, TX... by the brother of the owner of Tito's. I actually like it a little better, and it's $8 less than Tito's (for a "handle"), and about every other month, they knock off another $5. The brewmaster initially made the flavored Vodkas for Titos. If you like an orange flavored vodka, you need to try the Deep Eddy's Orange.

obviously not everyone has the same likes or dislikes.don't consider one choice better than another,just different.these are my choices:bourbon:blantons and bookers.don't care for straight ,scotch.liqueur:drambuie,disaronno,jim beam vanilla and redstag.cognac:always vsop ierre ferrand in particular.hennessy gives me a headache.hope this helps and enjoy your restocked bar no matter what.

Bourbon
Eagle Rare is the best bang for the buck. Also like Basil Hayden which kind of reminds me of a scotch in taste.
Red wines.
I like a strong red wine. Like one that goes good with steak. Usually Chianti and Tuscans have excellent wines at decent prices. Also like cabs.

Macallan 12 is my preferred, but my "everyday" Scotch is Famous Grouse. It is a blend of two single malts, Macallan and Highland. While the Macallan is known for its smoothness, the Highland brings a smokiness to the palate. It also lowers the cost!!!! Famous Grouse costs between $30-40 for 1.75L.

I've had most all of them, for under $50 per handle, Seagrams is your best bet, especially the 100 proof. Bourbon & Scotch, different game, the difference in price, and brands is very noticeable

for years, but on a trip to Texas some years ago, I noticed most of my kin drinking Weller's.
Tried and liked it. And by the way those folks think "cutting" the whiskey, as they say, is sissy drinking...it's drunk straight up, no mixers and usually no ice.
I, also, like to keep Malibu and Bicardi's on hand for the rum drinkers, and most any brand of Vodka, as it's always cut...and few notice any difference. lol.

Larceny or Four Roses on hand for bourbon....Highland Park 12 for scotch...Tito's for vodka (but will definitely check out the Western Son tip!). My palate isn't sophisticated enough to discern differences, the exception being the Highland Park...love it...12, 15, 18...all good.

absolutely agree about sissy drinking.you can buy soapstone cubes(ebay),freeze them,and chill without diluting.you still get to experience the subtle nuances.have learned that to fully enjoy what you're drinking you have to master the fine art of sipping slowly.tell your kin that drinking straight is often referred to as drinking neat.only way to go.

You may have to go to Atlanta to buy them, depending on where you live. Leopold Brothers, Nolet’s, Monkey 47 and Sipsmith are my go to brands. Monkey 47 is more of a sipper not a mixer (and super expensive compared to the others).

I second Monkey 47, and Nolet’s. Never had the other two, but I will put them on my list. In my area I have to special order all of those gins. If you want something a little more accessible try Hendricks or Tanqueray Ten. Should be able to get those at pretty much any Liquor store.

My favs in order. Do not mix any of these. The flavors is just fine neat (no ice) in a glass.
#1 Red Harbor - Rather new. Couple of guys who went to school in the upstate researched recipes from the 1800s to formulate their product. Made just north of Charleston. #2 Zaya A little sweeter. Description: Zaya Gran Reserva Rum is a blend of three to five rums sourced from Trinidad and Tobago. Double-distilled from pure sugar cane in copper pot stills, the rums are aged in whiskey and bourbon oak barriques (225-liter barrels) for a minimum of 12 years. Zaya rum is distilled by Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala.
#3 Ron Zacapa Centenario. Description: Ron Zacapa Centenario is a premium rum produced in Guatemala by Rum Creation and Products, a subsidiary of Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, and distributed and marketed by Diageo. Zacapa Centenario was created in 1976 to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the foundation of Zacapa, a town in eastern Guatemala.

Gin probably has more variability than most liquors as the makers use different botanicals and infuse the gin. Hendricks makes the top of many reviews but I personally don't like it as it has a cucumber taste. I'm also not a fan of Bombay Sapphire as I find it too harsh.
I don't think you can go wrong with Tangueray. It's very good and while it may not be every gin drinker's favorite, I don't know a gin drinker that doesn't like it.

Dugatiger's favorites are:
Makers Mark Bourbon, Bombay Sapphire Gin, Tito's Vodka, Jose' Quervo Tequila, Black Crown Royal blended, Black Grouse Scotch (if you like it more authentic, get "Smokey Black). I'm not much of a rum drinker, but I do like the Captain Morgan Black Rum in some umbrella drinks at the beach.
I generally get Clos du Bois Pinot Noir and Cabernet in red wines, and Decoy Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are favorites, albeit they are a little pricey for some. There are good Kendel Jackson and other vintages that are very good, as well.
While these are my favorites, there are many great choices out there that are at both ends of the pricing spectrum.

My current bar is very simple. 18 year old Glenfiddich, Jamison's, Tullemore Dew, (I like Irish whiskey, so sue me) Courvoisier VSOP, and Wild Turkey Boubon. As far as wines, I prefer Rose over others(not that abomination White Zinfandel that some people try to pass off as Rose) because as a light pink it can go with any food and therefore none of that "white with this, red with that" BS.
