They are just honestly trying to find the four best teams in the country for a playoff. They don't have a preseason poll which influences the following polls to the point of embarrassment.

I'm not betting a year's worth of posting on it but according to everything I saw unfold during the formation of the playoff committee and the process they are all sworn to uphold I'd give the playoff system a 98% chance of being fair and honest.

There are two more issues with the AP poll.

The majority of their readers are local and like to hear goodness about the local team. Anyone who thinks writers don't have an agenda when it comes to voting is just plain nieve.
An example is Cootlumbia paper and any other fish wrap in the country. They spend the entire season convincing themselves that what their readers want is what is right. They vote some higher than is honest and others down lower than is honest.
All their information and comparisons come from ESPiN.

Va tech, Duke, Miami, Pitt, UNC, could all get ole miss and it would not be a shock, at all .
Espn hopped on them after they got by Texas last year, when Texas got thumped by BYU and fired their coach.
Ole miss a top 10 is 100% hype, middle of the pack team in if in acc.
