Jay Bilas calls this years SEC the most powerful conference ever

I understand the sentiment and I would go so far as say it is a deep and well balanced conference. However, some of the ACC and Big East teams from the 80's and 90's would stand up very well against the top of the SEC.

Premature statement IMO. They have to prove it in the NCAAT. Beating each other just means there is parity, it doesn't mean there is greatness.

8 SEC teams made it. 5 were upset in the first round. Tennessee and Bama had good showings.
(2) Tennessee - elite 8 (3) Kentucky - upset first round (4) Alabama - made final four (4) Auburn - upset first round (6) South Carolina - upset first round (7) Florida - upset first round (8) Miss St - upset first round (9) Texas A&M - won one game

It’s just idiotic. Basketball since the one and done doesn’t have near the talent level it did in the past. Those ACC and Big East teams prior to the changes would smoke these $EC teams.

I was fixing to say the same thing. I really can see it being like last year with a bunch going down in the first or second round.

I would think the most powerful “ever” includes the last 30-40 years.

They are just warming up and got the talking points memo from ESPN HQ for what will be the "basketball game of the century" in the most powerful conference in America this weekend between Alabama and Auburn.

Bilas is not talking about the top teams, he is talking about the conference. The top 10 teams have a 191-51 record which is winning at a .79% clip and 9 of the 10 are ranked. As a Duke great, Bilas would not make a statement like that unless the numbers backed him up.

Just flat out looking at ranked teams I’m sure no conference has had that many teams ranked at one time, but all time? Apples and oranges. The leagues back in the day only had 8-10 teams. Not sure how he is justifying that statement. Curious.

Teams in the portal era cannot stack depth the way they used to. It is senseless to even compare the top teams today to the top teams of even just a few years ago. There is no comparison. The inability for anyone to stack quality depth like they could ten years ago makes it foolish for anyone to suggest that any team or conference is the best ever in this modern era of college football. In February too? Cmon man.

This feels like a year that the SEC won't have a single team in the final 4

Based nothing off a hunch. It just always seems like when the media pumps up teams/conferences to this extent, they fall flat on their face in crunch time
...or, alternatively, i'm way off and the final four will exclusively be SEC teams....here's to hoping not

Bilas knows a little something about basketball but the SEC E.O.Y. winner (along with the others selected) still have to play the NCAAT games where anything can happen.
Go Tigers beat FSU!

The SEC certainly seems really strong this year, but it is too early to know

exactly how good they might be.
I suspect that they will get a bunch of teams in the NCAA Tournament, and then have more than their share of early exits.
I do think their top few teams are really good, but we can say the same for other conferences including the ACC. The question is if their middle of the pack teams are truly as great as the media seems to think.

How about this: we wait until the season is over and pontificate then. I think in order to qualify the SEC would need 9 in the Sweet 16, Five in the Final 8 and 3 in the Final Four. Wear your crown if that happens. I’m sure the seeding will not match them up until necessary.

It's a rule in the seeding to avoid conference matchups in the early rounds.
