BCS expert: Tigers need to become Oregon fans

The path to a BCS bowl game for Clemson is plain and simple, according to CBS Sports’ BCS/Bracketology expert Jerry Palm. Full Story »

This also tells all these folks that were dead against Clemson leaving the acc a while back that they were DEAD WRONG. They were DEAD WRONG about all Clemson has to do in the acc is win to make it to the NC. In the now system, and in the play off system. Clemson will not ever get close to playing in a NC game while beating up on a DEAD acc. Dabo would have to schedule everyone of our ooc games against power teams from other conferences other than the usual warm up games with cup cakes. Clemson/FSU couldn't afford to play those type of games like the sec, pac teams, or the Big teams do b/c the acc is considered a cup cake. If an sec or the other good conference wanted to play a better than usual cup cake, just pick an acc team for a bigger cup cake. Some of our fans plain and simple can not see the forest b/c of a few trees are in their way. Look around those few trees, the forest is there. And that big ole forest sure as H&LL isn't the acc. The acc is just the shrub bushes that they some how see as the forest.

Sure, we might have a harder time than most getting into the playoff, but that drive up to Wake Forest is so short I don't even have to rent a hotel room.

Not to mention how crazy it is to recruit in the mid-west instead of right here. This is an abnormally bad year in the ACC, no doubt about it. Things change though if we beat the coots and the noles beat the gators. And just maybe the the other bowl-eligible ACC teams will win. We have a great opportunity to make a statement. Remember, the Ducks, in my opinion have an excellent chance to win out!!!

It's much easier to go undefeated in the ACC than

any other conference. Undefeated in the ACC might not get you in the top 2, but it probably would get you in the top 4. Undefeated would at least keep you ahead of 2 loss teams from the big conferences.

Remember.... Regardless of how bad the ACC may look some years, we do have our seat at the table (the Orange Bowl), for a good many years. If FSU and The Tigers win out, and Oregon wins out, we have 2 ACC teams in BCS bowls this year so its up to Clemson and FSU to take care of business and earn getting there. And if we get there, WIN!!!!

.. that a BCS bowl is very possible without actually being conference champs, I must say that our defense (or lack thereof) makes me very concerned that we will allow an embarrassing amount of points again to one of those K-State/Oregon/Oklahoma offenses that put up points in flashes. I really hope we get Georgia somehow.

of conference games. The ACC games of Duke, Wake, Virginia are our cupcake games.

We should only schedule one Wofford or Furman per year and add another tougher opponent. Take the path of Fresno State and tell the other schools "if you want come to us, then we will come to you"

at some point we just have to do it.

When you speak of "cupcake" teams in the ACC, do you mean teams like Ole Miss, Miss State, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Tennessee or do you mean Washington, Washington State, Colorado, Arizona State, Arizona, Utah, Cal? Those are power houses of teams!

badge-donor-10yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Front Page Story: BCS expert: Tigers need to become Oregon fans

Nov 16, 2012, 10:04 AM

The rub is --- that every team in the ACC is like that with the exception of Clemson, FSU and (usually) Virginia Tech.

Most of the "cupcake" teams you listed would be competitive with our middle teams (UNC, Georgia Tech, NC State).

It's been proven in bowl games and OOC play for several years now. Vandy whooping up on Wake? Tennessee embarrassing NC State's vaunted defense? It wasn't long ago that Clemson was the ACC runner up and we were down to Kentucky in the 3rd quarter of the Music City Bowl.

According to that the PAC 12 is in the same shape as acc is. Nobody knew auburn would be as bad as they are. Next yr should not be an issue but GA is light yrs ahead of auburn and will probably be preseason top 5. Of course, we will have to win that game

Our season scapegoat comes from the SEC, not ACC

Nov 16, 2012, 7:15 AM [ in reply to Re: Front Page Story: BCS expert: Tigers need to become Oregon fans ]

Remember that supposedly tough season opener this year?

That wasn't against an ACC team. And every week that Auburn steps onto the field, our SOS suffers just a little bit more.

Were the roles reversed, and FSU having to cheer for Oregon to get a BCS berth, they'd be cursing the Mountaineers for backing out and leaving a BCS-sized hole in their schedule.

This year it wasn't the ACC that messed us up ... though a strong VTech would have certainly helped both of us. We planned for that dip in conference quality.

No, it doesn't prove anything as "dead wrong". It proves in

Nov 16, 2012, 7:16 AM [ in reply to Re: Front Page Story: BCS expert: Tigers need to become Oregon fans ]

this ONE YEAR Clemson may not make it in the final 4 playoff with one loss. ONE YEAR. That is not statistically significant enough to prove anything.

In this particular year, there will be other one loss teams who wouldn't make a theoretical 4 team playoff. Just like there will be in any year utilizing such a small pool of teams. It could be one loss teams from any conference.

In this particular year, our schedule looks worse than it normally would because VT and Auburn are uncharacteristically down. That type of thing is cyclical and not indicative of any "dead wrong" conclusions.

Plus, some bowls are still picking based on regional and/or name matchups. That will go away to some extent when playoffs are implemented

Too, several teams ahead of us could still lose. Saying we could not possibly make a 4 team playoff this year is premature.

Next year could be an entirely different animal. Win while playing UGA, VT, FSU, and uSC, for instance, and the scenario plays out differently.

Every year will play out differently, and nothing that happened this year allows a conclusion that a one loss Clemson team can never make a 4 team playoff. Nevermind the fact a 4 team playoff is merely a short-term trial. The number of teams WILL grow as it should...simply because of the things I mentioned here - 4 teams is not enough.

Overall, to put it bluntly, you are wrong to assume this one single year proves anything about other folks being "DEAD WRONG". Sorry, but your statements about being "dead wrong" are dead wrong.

Have you seen Alabama's schedule???

Nov 16, 2012, 8:53 AM [ in reply to Re: Front Page Story: BCS expert: Tigers need to become Oregon fans ]

Look at theirs and then knock ours.

To start the season, we expected to play FOUR top 25 teams, if not Five. (FSU, VTech, SCAR being top 10) And many of us predicted 2 to 4 losses this year based on that.
Auburn
FSU
Vtech
SCAR
possible NC State
and possibly GTech.

In most years, that line up would be difficult.

But look at Alabama. TWO rated teams, and they lost one, and should have lost both. TAMU was ranked #15, and Ala drops 3 spots... AND because Ala is so high and mighty, TAMU gets to jump into the top 10??? Yet ALA is the same as us with one loss, yet still rated #4..... It is not so much the schedule as it is the people voting... Not just the computer polls that hurt, but human polls too.

Human polls: Florida has to block a punt and run it back for a TD with 2 secs left on the clock against ULL! Yet they stay put at #7. We slaughter MD, and fall a spot. ????????? I still can't get past that logic.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Have you seen Alabama's schedule???

Nov 16, 2012, 1:29 PM

At the end of the day all we can do is WIN games! You win games, both the games that you are suppose to win and the games that nobody expects you to win then you end up in the NC game. That's how we did it in 1981, that's how we will do it again.

The BCS is a joke. I still think that anyone who really thinks that Alabama is the 2011-12 champions b/c they beat LSU in the NC game is kidding themselves. Champions don't loose at home! Flat out, you want to wear the championship belt, you better take care of business in your own house. Bama lost on their real home field and LSU lost in New Orleans (essentially home field). In my honest opinion they should leave the record books blank for last year.

This SEC love affair is no different that the FSU love fest that we had to deal with in the 1990's and the ND bias that has existed forever.

Growing up, I didn't even know Oregon had a football team, everything coming out of the Pacific had USC or UCLA all over it. If Oregon can be a national power, you bet your sweet A$$ that Clemson will be back there one day. IF THEY WIN GAMES. That's all that matters!

Forget all the other BS, stop squawking about it on the message boards. If they line up and hit the other guy in the mouth harder than they get hit, and score more points that the other team every week, they go to the NC.

The same is true for South Carolina too. If they win every game they get to crow. If they screw up and get their head cut off, they get eaten for dinner. We have to win games, and we have to live on the edge which means we will have to play some very hard teams on our OOC schedule.

Play to a standard! Step on somebody's neck!

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, i think you are dead wrong. Even with just a 4

Nov 16, 2012, 8:55 AM [ in reply to Re: Front Page Story: BCS expert: Tigers need to become Oregon fans ]

team playoff, an undefeated Clemson team from the ACC will get into the playoffs EVERY time. Even this year, playing our worst schedule in memory, we would be no lower than 4th right now had we beaten FSU, and any upsets ahead of us would've just moved us up further.

Therefore, all we need to do is win.

Re: Front Page Story: BCS expert: Tigers need to become Oregon fans

Nov 16, 2012, 10:44 AM [ in reply to Re: Front Page Story: BCS expert: Tigers need to become Oregon fans ]

No All Orange, remaining in the ACC was the best move. The only good move out of the ACC would be to the SEC and that move was not available. The minimal financial difference would be less than the increased travel expenses.

We know that a 1 loss ACC team will have a hard time making it into the final 4, which is the current benchmark, but we also know that an undefeated ACC champ will make it. That would be true for both Clemson and FSU in an extraordinarily weak ACC, so it would be true in a normal year when the ACC is at least marginally stronger than it is this season.

In fact, this season, the ACC may get 2 BCS teams because the Pac 12 doesn't have another eligible team. How would Clemson benefit by being in the Big 12? The answer is that we would not be better off in the Big 12.

Nov 16, 2012, 3:55 PM [ in reply to Re: Front Page Story: BCS expert: Tigers need to become Oregon fans ]

I want to say this. I got one TU and one TD on my above post. Hey mr.TD, when you feel like what I have to say is aimed directly at you, you are wrong. My Motive isn't to single out anyone that cares or love our Clemson Tigers. I'm speaking in general as the whole of different opinions from my own as in should we or shouldn't we leave the ACC. I say we should because the acc is not for Clemson. It's not for Clemson b/c wants to win FB championships. Swofford has made sure that he doesn't want or care for the acc competing for FB championships over Basketball. But if anything that I said stand true with you personally and has hurt your feeling. Well then just TD away b/c that TU/TD option doesn't make me any less a great Tiger fan that only wants what is best for Clemson as long as we are a FB school chasing our gold's of being champions in FB. If we would have been undefeated playing against all these BB schools, we would still be considered that same as now. And that is our SOS isn't strong enough for Clemson to play for a NC. I didn't make the acc FB so weak, Swofford and the acc B O T's did that all by their self. So sorry if the truth hurts your feeling. I hate changing something that I've been with all my life also. But some time for the betterment, we have to change. IMO, I believe it's past that time that Clemson should think strongly about changing the conference that we play in. But only if we can get an invite to a strong FB conference.

Fact of the matter is with the talent coming out of these southeast high schools and the overall depth in high school recruiting these days. All we have to wait on is the filtering out of these sorry coaches in the ACC. The talent is there I don't care what anybody says. I give it two years and the ACC will be much improved. I'm not saying as good as the ESECPN or the PAC-12. Lol it's just that I can't see the ACC getting any worse.

us going no matter what if we win out because no BCS bowl is taking a PAC 12 or BIG 12 team if they don't have to because they want to sell tickets and those teams don't travel. Even if Oregon loses ND would move into the title game and give up an at-large.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, he seemed to make a weird assumption here.

Nov 16, 2012, 9:00 AM

It sounds like he was assuming (or maybe overlooking something) that Oregon would still be in the title game despite losing, and that the team that beats them (either Stanford or Oregon St) would then finish 10-2 and be an appealing replacement pick for the Rose Bowl when Oregon plays for the title though.

That's almost certainly wrong though, because if Oregon loses they are likely out of the title game (they would fall back to at least 4th), and will be playing in the Rose Bowl. The Fiesta would get the only replacement pick in that situation since ND has no affiliation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No he's not, and it isn't that hard to figure out

Nov 16, 2012, 9:11 AM

A 1 loss Oregon team is going to a BCS bowl no matter what. If they don't win the conference then the PAC-12 winner will go and the PAC-12 gets 2 teams probably knocking us down or out.

The 4 At-larges would be
An SEC Team
ND
Oregon
then we get lumped in with a bunch of other teams.

I like our chances with "a bunch of other teams". We have 2

2) Dynamic offense

Nov 16, 2012, 9:47 AM

Obviously the Sugar Bowl thinks that the Big 12 will bring tons of fans or they wouldn't have agreed to that massive payout for the "Champions Bowl."

The Fiesta Bowl also loves OU to come out there.

They are the wild card when it comes to the intangibles. Plus if Clemson and FSU win their last games, it will solidify the Big 12 as the top conference.

Nov 16, 2012, 9:49 AM [ in reply to Wouldn't ND move into the NC game freeing up an at-large?*** ]

5 bowls = 10 teams

6 conference qualifiers
4 at-large

ND always takes up 1 of the 4 at-large spots. They don't replace a conference champ.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You are assuming a 1-loss Oregon team wouldn't win

the conference. Oregon State already has 2 Pac 12 losses, so Oregon could beat Stanford, lose to Oregon St, and still win the conference.

I admit that i was thinking Stanford had 2 conference losses as well, instead of 1 and another to ND. If Stanford beats them and plays for the conference title though, then Oregon would get an at-large.

No need to be a jerk and say "it isn't that hard to figure out" though.

We have to win out if we're going to a BCS game.

And yes, Oklahoma is a more attractive team than Clemson, so even if we do win out we still might not get there.

Nov 16, 2012, 1:10 PM

That's really what it comes down to. If oregon doesn't make the national championship, but still wins the conference then we would still almost certainly get in. If Oregon loses the Pac-12 and gets in as an at-large, then we would be fighting for one last spot (probably with Oklahoma).

National Champ - K-State vs. Notre Dame
Rose - Pac-12 Champ vs. Nebraska
Fiesta - Oregon vs. SEC At-Large
Sugar - SEC Champ vs. Clemson/Oklahoma
Orange - FSU vs. Louisville

Re: I'm pulling for anybody ahead of Clemson to lose

Nov 16, 2012, 3:23 PM

Do you know how many highly unlikely things would have to happen for that to come to fruition? First, we would need losses by at least 2 of the unbeaten teams. That could easily happen, but probably won't.

Second, we would need all the SEC teams ahead of us to lose at least once and I don't see either 1-6 Missouri or Sam Houston St. beating the Aggies. So that means that Auburn has to beat Alabama. I'd give Sam Houston State a better chance against aTm.

Let's forget about aTm and just assume we jump them with wins over NC State and usc-e. Then we need FSU to beat Fla and GaT to beat UGa, then we need UGa to beat Alabama. That actually seems more likely than Sam Houston State beating aTm. Okay, so if Bama wins the SEC, then we need all the undefeated teams to lose and we probably need Oregon to lose twice. Maybe Stanford could beat them this weekend and Oregon State to finish up the season.

We might also need Wake and/or BC to beat Notre Dame, preferably both, but either would help us in the computers and drop ND. Oh yeah, we also need FSU to lose the ACC CG or lose to Maryland this weekend.
