Football Folks - as an OC: "are you running Mesh plays in the Red Zone"?

Mesh plays where either the QB keeps or depending on the DE on outside zone or the 3 tech on inside zone reaction gives to the RB or not.

Not asking you to be Clemson OC. I am asking if you were in general a OC on some level of football; is that a play you would run?

I just don't think I would Tigers fans. The defense can sell-out and just get up field and cause that mesh to possibly cause a turnover. I've seen it too many times.

On the other hand; it makes it very hard for the defense to be right. It puts the D in a big time conflict when executed top to bottom right.

The risk vs. reward to me might be worth it; if I feel confident we can move the football on that opponent. If it had been a struggle to get to let's say the 10 yard line on in; i'm not doing it.

What about you; if you ever had an opportunity to call plays. Is that something you would call?

No mesh play inside the 10 yard line. Maybe if it is closer to the 20, but if it is first and 10 inside the 20 I think I want to pound the ball for a first down.

Assuming you mean the zone read type mesh and not the mesh routes common in air raid concepts? If so, it’s situationally dependent but generally, I don’t love zone read mesh type run plays when you’re that close as LBs aren’t pulled far back enough to put in conflict thereby reducing the offensive advantage that would be more prevalent in a longer field situation.

Wait…wasn’t the game winner against Bama a mesh play?

Fade route to the corner of the end zone with either the TE or one of the new receivers winning a jump ball.

I don’t know why we didn’t run more halfback angle type plays near the goal line. When we had DJ we pretty much knew he was going to be sticking his nose in there on the goal line situations. That went away with Cade and we have since had all types of issues around the goal line.

HB angle is tough to cover unless you know that exact play is coming, it can slip through zone and eats man cov up when executed properly. Easy read as far as if you need a pass play around goal line.

I think we may have lost a bowl game to Nebraska running a mesh type play near goal line. Anyone recall?
