To get truly jacked, you basically have to build muscle by eating a caloric surplus for months at a time, and then cut weight by essentially starving yourself. The general hope is that you lose all the fat you gained and keep most of the muscle you gained.
I got down to 194lbs and 13% body fat in August 2023, but didn't like how lean I looked and wanted to have that robust physique that the bigger guys in the gym have. So for about 18 months, I oscillated between eating at maintenance, and then bulking for long periods of time, with some small efforts at "cutting" in the spring of last year that were thrown off by not taking it seriously.
The result in December was that I had tree trunks for thighs, 18-19" biceps and was deadlifting in the 500s, but I had a belly and a chunky face and was sitting at about 229, 35lbs from where I was a year and a half before. The bulk was successful! But you have a choice - permabulk and just be a big thick fella, or shave some of that chunk off and look like an amateur body builder.
2 days before year years, I started my cut. Here are the results. I'm down about 14-16lbs (some is water weight I realize), the vast majority of which is body fat (I've lost 10 lbs of fat as opposed to 3 lbs of muscle per the inBody machine at the gym)

- On average, I burn about 3300 calories per day -- this averages out workout days and rest days. I commit to eating no more than 2500, but most days its around 2300, which puts me on pace for a 7000 cal per week deficit. That's 2 lbs. - I eat about the same amount of protein as my current body weight in grams. So if I weight 213, I aim for about 213 grams of protein a day. A lot of people would argue that this is too much. - I eat a #### ton of carbs - nothing I do can be considered keto. To be able to work out with intensity when you're restricting calories REQUIRES carbs. Also, muscle maintenance requires it. - I can cheat and I do cheat, but never multiple meals in a row, or days in a row. Saturday, I usually splurge and eat ice cream and cookies and ribeyes to keep my sanity.
Anyway, I challenged myself to be discliplined and this week is one of those weeks where it all kinda started to pay off with looking in the mirror and on the scale.
We can also put this on /r/nobodyasked, but based on how this goes I'm gonnna do some fitness coaching on the side so am practicing for that.

No joke, I needed to see a success story like this. I had been doing really well with my workout routine until sickness/holidays/kids threw me off the wagon. This is some extra motivation to get back on it. Good for you!

and your charts shows that you can cut (somewhat healthy) much faster by actually being active and making that activity a part of your life.
IT HAS TO BE PART OF LIFE to work, not a choice.
I was ACE Certified for many years and also got the ACE Cancer Recovery certification too. I didn't do a lot of training, had to for another role, but what you will see, and I even saw it with cancer survivors....they are ALL IN for about 2-3 months and then you never see them again. Or they start seeing gains and think they can do it themselves, but don't realize you are the reason for the gains and that you are their motivation. Never see them again in the gym at all.
Good for you buddy. Keep us up to date.

that have to lose A LOT...if it's a springboard into healthy eating and being active, I think it can be good. I don't believe it should be the ONLY thing, though.
If I hadn't originally gotten down from 260 to 220ish after I quit boozing, I might have never actually made the step to go to that next level. I think anything that helps people get some momentum can be helpful if they have the right coaching.
But yeah, it's not rocket science. But even as much as I know (i.e. 7000 calories = 2 lbs), there have been times the past 6 weeks (like the week of January 20th), where I was just like ###. Patience is definitely key.

Went from 260 down to 215. It's been life-changing. But I've plateaued now for months. Can't break through 212. But, my garage gym is dusty, and that there's the reason. But, I'm much more ready/able to start back at 215 than I was at 260, from a confidence and health perspective. So it's exactly what you said -- a springboard into healthier lifestyle. The people who get in trouble with Semaglutide are the ones who lose the weight, don't change lifestyle, and gain everything back when they're off the drug.
But nobody should hate on Ozempic, or shame people for taking that route. It's truly a life-saver for people, and can put people in a much better place to take the reins on the physical/diet aspect of weight maintenance.
--
Back in my 20s, I went from 250 down to 180 on pure reps, sweat, and macros. Did it in less than a year. But I was single, my roommates were both my workout partner and my dietician, and I could grill chicken and throw on some parmesan cheese, and down that bland ####### without having to worry about other mouths to feed. It was glorious. When we all moved in together nobody had a microwave so we said eff it. Either warm in the oven or eat it cold. We were zeuses.
--
Pic of home gym cause I love it and need to stop decorating it and actually use it.

4 days a week on my lunch break. I used to work out for like 1.5 to 2 hours like 2 or 3 days a week. The biggest thing I think was working out before eating lunch was basically intermittent fasting, which I never understood how anyone could do that. I'm lean and always hungry. But eventually you get used to it. So combine that with the one simple goal of just going anabolic every time you work out, and I've seen some results even though I've never really stopped working out for the last 20 years.
Also think I have a small hernia. Anyone got any advice. It's not a whole tear that's left me unmovable. This will heal on it's own right?

was just with juan plate on each side. And I still managed to feel the crunch on my spine. I sworn it off in favor of the legpress. I'm too old for that shiz. Hit my goal 420Lbs back on 1/3. Probably could have done more, but it was important to hit 420. Next goal is 690.

I learned the hard way to listen to your pain. I am now the proud owned of a mesh repair for my hernia. I can still feel it sometimes when I'm lifting. That's when I stop. I mean the slightest little ping and I'm done. I ain't going there again. Instead of weight, my goal is reps. More reps with less weight. If I'm not working up a sweat doing that, I can add a little more. But then I'm doing less reps again.
Knees started to hurt. I got knee sleeves on both and it helps. But again, stop. I can get back in another day.

Without going into a complete life story:
I started Crossfit when I was in my mid 50's. Insane right? I maybe Rx'ed one or two workouts for about 8 years, but I liked the high intensity and variation in the workout. I also like the coaching. Then I had some health issues, including a hernia because I was stupid enough to chase weight at my age. 285 back squat that sent me to the floor. ouch. Could only get my weight down to 200 lbs, but felt better (hernia aside) than I had in all my years. dropped 2 pant sizes. But the workouts started becoming few and far between.
Then I swapped going to the gym for going to the pub. Gained 50 lbs in a year. Ignored what one trainer told me years ago: You can't out work a bad diet. True dat.
So after a checkup which showed all my numbers as good, I got back in the gym. Started paying attention to what I shoved in my face, cut back considerably on alcohol. Been at it consistently for about 3 weeks now. Going at my pace, but working up a good sweat for about an hour at a time. leaving the heavy lifting to the youngsters but I'm still lifting. Feeling better every day.
Oh, and I'll be 65 this year.

not on purpose. Went to the doc the other day for the sciatica pain and the scale was embarrassing. If I can get this leg pain to go away, I'm going to get back at it, but I just don't think my back and knees can handle any powerlifting anymore. They were barely hanging on before I slowed.
My problem is meal planning working around really busy schedules outside of work. I've got 5 people to meal plan for and some days I just aint got it in me to get that done between running kids back and forth to practice or doctor appointments, etc.
Congrats to you though, that takes alot of discipline and hopefully the fitness coaching will take off for you, there is certainly a market out there for it.

I had been at 156 pounds now after Christmas back up to 161. I count me steps everyday with Samsung Health on phone. Try to get 1000 steps a day. Also calorie intake. Me logs everything he eats. Try to lay off all sugars, butt some prepared food has it. I'm type 2 diabetic. Taking Jardiance and glypicide once daily. Also seeing a endocrinologist doctor for treatment. Its a biotch getting old, butt it's better than six foot under.
