Re: Football Recruiting Update: Clemson offers Brent Venables' son

Jun 9, 2015, 6:09 PM

Legit d1 prospect. His name was called on more than half the tackles and deflected passes when Daniel played Easley last year. I would liken him to potentially Ben boulware at this stage in high school.

debate again...

Jun 9, 2015, 6:18 PM

I'd throw him a schollie just to help lock his old man down as our D-coordinator for the next 6 years. It a bonus that he's actually pretty good and will be one of the smarter players on the team footballwise.

Re: Even if the kid had never played football before

I agree this isn't a wasted scholly at all. The kid can play and 6 more years of coach v? Yep sign me up all day

The posters on. Here that think that he was offered so coach V would stay for 6 more years have lost your friggin mine or have never attended a Daniel football game. The kid is a stud !

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not at all

Jun 9, 2015, 6:50 PM [ in reply to Oh good. We can rekindle the idiotic "wasting scholarships" ]

he apparently tore it up at Oklahoma's camp too.

Assuming he keeps getting better through his high school career he's going to be a legitimate recruit with multiple offers.

I'm pretty sure he will attend for free and not count towards the limit as Clemson faculty and staff atleast some I think in the past had it where their children attend for free. Just a thought.

Re: Oh good. We can rekindle the idiotic "wasting scholarships"

I don't think it works that way at Clemson. Some other smaller schools let staff members attend for free, but pretty sure Clemson does not

Re: Oh good. We can rekindle the idiotic "wasting scholarships"

No. Children of Clemson staff do not attend free.

Re: Oh good. We can rekindle the idiotic "wasting scholarships"

Jun 10, 2015, 10:38 AM

Faculty/Staff can take a certain amount of hours per semester for free. I want to say it's 6 hours. Their children have to do it the traditional way.

here is a thought. this board should be shut down. far to many idiots that claim to be clemson fans and way to many coots that claim to be clemson fans. oh wait, what is the difference. first off, i am sure that the ncaa would frown on coaches kids or former players kids "walking on" to play at the school there dad is at. and b, kids want to be part of the "team" and if a coach think that if there is a chance their kid can play a lick he should be given a ship. you idiots think dabo offers every kid whose dad went to clemson a ship. maybe you can use google, a great tool by the way, and check out every former player that has a kid that plays football and see if every one of them were offered by dabo. what is even more mind boggling is even question anything we are doing in recruiting at this time. even the great steve superior has walk ons every year, even with the oversigning and the numbers he runs off. please mods, do something about the idiocy of this board.

Jun 9, 2015, 7:21 PM [ in reply to Oh good. We can rekindle the idiotic "wasting scholarships" ]

Honestly, even if he's a 5-star recruit I hope that he'd "walk on". His dad's going to be pulling in a cool $1.35 million this year, so it'd be great for coach to throw down the $23k for tuition and save another slot for another top-level player.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Oh good. We can rekindle the idiotic "wasting scholarships"

Jun 10, 2015, 10:40 AM

Agreed. His parents can afford to send him to Clemson or anywhere. Let the kids whose parents can't have a chance to send their kid to a great school and not worry about the financial burden.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Oh good. We can rekindle the idiotic "wasting scholarships"

Jun 10, 2015, 2:07 PM

Honestly, it's not just about the fact that they have the means to send him to wherever he wants to go...it's the direct family connection with the program. For example, I don't expect Keyshawn Johnson to foot the bill to keep open a scholarship for the team if his son decides to come to Clemson. I don't expect Venables to do it either. However since he's directly involved with the team, and it would directly benefit him by doing so, it'd be nice.

He's really good? If he has half of Brent's intensity and decent talent, I'll take him.

Re: Football Recruiting Update: Clemson offers Brent Venables' son

Not trying to make a joke or anything here. If the kid can play, let's sign him up.

But could we just increase Venables salary an extra 100k and let the kid walk on so we can have an additional scholarship free?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Some people have this thing called pride

Jun 9, 2015, 7:23 PM

I think you missed his point. How I understood it was, assuming he wants to come to Clemson, why doesn't Clemson give Venables a raise equal to the cost of tuition when his son is here...then he could come onto the team instead of taking up a scholarship.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No missed point

Jun 9, 2015, 8:10 PM

just saying the kid probably wants the pride of competing for and earning a scholarship to play football at Clemson. It's not like we are the gamecocks where they take quantity over quality and weed through a bunch of players each year just to find a few good ones. With the quality of players Clemson has been getting in recent years I don't think we need to worry about working the system for an extra scholarship.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No missed point

Jun 10, 2015, 10:42 AM

You ALWAYS need to consider the number of scholarships being handed out. Especially when we've been giving out questionable scholarships to the sons of coaches & legacies. It's not "working the system". It's being vigilant. If he's good enough to be a 4-star recruit, then he knows he's good enough to be on the team. Nobody refers to a player as a scholarship athlete when referring to their pedigree. At this point, they refer to recruiting stars. If he's a top-level guy, he'll get the national respect he deserves.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No missed point

Jun 10, 2015, 6:11 PM

Ask Grady 3 star. Lineman about that. Stars don't mean as much as people think. 5 stars are normally pre madonnas. Not much difference in a 3 and 4 star unless you are working for rivals

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For every 3 star that turned out good some one

Jun 11, 2015, 7:37 AM

Can show you 10 4 and 5 stars that turned out good.

Stars matter .. the rankings don't.

Good, we'll keep Pops at the school for a while with this if he commits and signs in 2018.

I dont think its necessarily a good idea for a player to play for his dad in college

Jun 9, 2015, 7:17 PM

For both father and son. In college you want to move out and find your own way, be independent. For a coach the line between fathering and coaching would be blurry. And questions about fairness from other players would be an issue. I wouldnt be surprised if he went somewhere else and wouldnt blame him.

I can't believe the morons on the board who apparently can't

Jun 10, 2015, 8:50 AM

read beyond the words "Brent Venables son". How about the part of the article where the kid has already been impressive at an Oklahoma camp, and our camp, against older, more experienced competition? As a RISING SOPHOMORE? I personally think there is a positive to being his first offer. He will remember us as being the first to recognize talent, and this may go a long way towards his final decision, which is still a long way down the road. I wish him all the best, and hope we ultimately get him, from a coaching standpoint he will be ready to go the minute he sets foot on campus.
