Despite what ESPN might claim, when your "demise" results
Sep 23, 2022, 8:47 AM

in another 10 win season, rumors of that demise were greatly exaggerated. We had a momentary blip on the radar, but we are on the rise again. The plain Vanilla gloves are off, for the first time this season, and Wake Forest is in for a Rocky Road tomorrow. The long overdue return of Rev. Dodd, the cry of "Gee Haw'd" being heard once again, AND the onsite presence of MyFavOrange and MyFOjr all assure that the Demon Deacons will be exorcised starting at noon tomorrow. It will be glorious.
That is all, we now take you back to your regularly scheduled Friday pursuits.

If Alabama whipped off a few 10-3 seasons and a few other teams took the reign and dominated, they would be talking about Bama's demise. 10-3 is very good. It's just short of elite though.

Huh? How does it seem that way? We are talking about 10-3 seasons. Will you be happy if we go 10-3? It seems that way.

Yeah that 3-0 is good. And? They are still questioning if we are elite. 3-0 is cool. We will see what happens when we play someone. We may end up great and we will see. David Pollack, who is always fair to Clemson, was questioning us on ESPN earlier. He stated he hasn't seen an elite offense. I don't need to show anythjng by the way. I don't waste my time following everything to do with Tiger footballs for the last almost few decades because I don't mean it. I am objective. We will see if we are an elite team this year. Time will tell. We have a lot of potential. We need to step it up, but we just may to that. We will see how it all plays out.

Yes. Anyone that wants to denigrate continuing the second longest 10 win streak in college football history needs to find another hobby. Note - I’m not telling you you aren’t a good fan or find another team. You’re finding no joy even as we are, in fact, an “elite” team. If you aren’t enjoying it now, you never will. Our level of consistency, including last season, is paralleled only by Alabama.

I see National Title contenders as elite. We have been elite for years. Last year we were not. Will we be this year? We shall see. I enjoy it now and I enjoy it every year, even at 10-3. I am a practical person. We were not elite last year. I am hoping we are this year. If we are not so be it. You and I have a different level of how we evaluate elite and good. We were good, but not elite.

We’ll have to agree to disagree since their is no exact objective criteria for elite.
The definition is “a select group that is superior in terms of ability or qualities to the rest of a group or society.”
Being the second best program of the last decade by virtually any measure is elite. Having the longest active win streak is elite. Having the longest active home win streak and 2nd best of all time is elite. Winning 6 of the last 7 conference championships is elite. Having one of only 2 head coaches with more than one national championship is elite. Have the 2nd most consecutive 10 win seasons in college football history is absurdly elite. If you want to refute that these things are elite that’s an awfully strange position for a fan to take. You are actively embracing the rhetoric of those who want tear us down.

It seems there’s some blurring of program and team. I believe we are an elite program and last year’s team was good. This year’s team? That remains to be seen.

I guess I think of elite referring to program over a specific year’s team because how/when can you even make that call in season. If we stick with top 4 - that’s changed as late as week 14 (conference championship weekend). And declares Cincinnati 2021 as elite. To me, elite can’t really be measured in season and is only meaningful as a measure over time. If judging by this season, Georgia is the only team that has shown no vulnerability whatsoever. It doesn’t mean they aren’t going to get railroaded 50-0 in the SEC championship.

I would download the Roar app and listen to it on it. Then you are good almost anywhere that you might go. I listen to it in Ecuador. Florence to MB, you might be able to find one station, but with the app you don't have to worry when a station is going to fade out.

I would not necessarily say that. If you have a great defense, with a decent offense you can still be an elite team.
If our offense would have been mediocre last year and not just flat out terrible, we would have been in the playoffs again. We just had to be middle of the road, but the offense was not good enough to even be at the mediocre level last year unfortunately. Hoping to see some good things today and to keep the improvement going that we have seen so far this year.

10 wins in a 13 game year isn't "elite"
Sep 23, 2022, 10:07 AM
|
|
Ole Miss Utah Clemson Kentucky BYU Oregon Iowa
all had 10 wins and 3+ losses last year
Right, wrong, or indifferent Clemson/Dabo set a bar from 2015-2019/20. Last year could've been a "blip"..........we'll see, but hanging hats on "10-win seasons" as justification for all is "fine and dandy" is sticking your head in the sand. Another record like last year(or worse) and the concerns/questions will continue to grow........same for the next year and the year after that, etc......
They've set a bar and now that has to be sustained in the ever changing landscape of college football if you want to consider Clemson an "ELITE" program.

our standards, and yet we STILL won 10 games. I'll take that as the occasional down year without a doubt.
For comparisons, the two Tommy's, West and Bowden, got to 10 wins exactly ZERO times between them. Ken Hatfield before them only did it once, and that was his first year, with Danny Ford's players.
The fact that you don't consider 10 wins an accomplishment, especially with all the injuries last year, tells me just how much Dabo has gotten us spoiled. No, it wasn't "Elite", but it was way to Heyall better than average!

I said it isn't "elite".
Also, don't care what West or Bowden did.........like I said the STANDARD/BAR has been RAISED.
Yes, injuries played a part last year, but the BULK of our offensive issues still remain and the ONLY 2 issues that have been for the most part "fixed" is: -DJ is LIGHTYEARS improved vs last year -We are relatively healthy vs last year
Our problems at WR, Oline, and playcalling still remain............will they all improve enough to get back to our 0-1 loss seasons????????.............time will tell, but as of NOW discussing WR issues, Oline issues, & Offensive playcalling are COMPLETELY WARRANTED and JUSTIFIED, unless you can't take off the orange glasses and for that I can't help you.

I am not saying that we are where I want to be, but despite the GT game, I would say that the O-line and wide receivers are light years ahead of last year. There will be some growing pains with Miller, just like with Tate last year. The difference is that Miller won the job over better competition. Our plan B or C is better than plan A last year. We have practical depth on the line this year, and I believe that Austin will do more with the talent that we have than Caldwell. And yes we do have talent. Most of line has been 4*'s with as many 5*'s as 3, which is outstanding for ratings on linemen.
As for the wide outs, Antonio Williams gives us a true slot receiver, and I think that Randall will prove to be a third option after Williams and Collins. I don't know if Spector will ever be great, but he is certainly going to be solid. The potential is there for Ngata and maybe he will A) stay healthy and B) live up to it with better competition for the job. We can also throw Will Taylor in, particularly as the season wears on. We were doing all sorts of things to get him the ball last year before he got hurt, but have yet to really use him this year.
Yes, I have Orange colored glasses. I acknowledge it proudly, but they have been tinted with our success in the past and I firmly expect them to get brighter in the future.

While I appreciate your enthusiasm, there has been nothing this season to indicate the program is "on the rise again". Looks like another good, not great, season. Should we be grateful we aren't looking at .500? Of course, but let's not act like we are a contender at this point.

It's a difference when playing weak ACC teams, and playing playoff teams. There are many teams that can win many games in a season, but the story changes when it's time to play for championships. It wouldn't matter if we can win 10 games in the conference we play in, but if you lose in your toughest games, you're no better than your weaker opponents when it was a tough challenge to beat them, and Wake isn't a good team by the standards of what a really good team is!!!
