Dabo could have hired a reputable OL coach

May 13, 2022, 8:23 PM

with experience in developing OL for the next level. Austin may turn out ok but he has NO credentials of developing OL especially for the NFL. The OL has been the biggest pitfall during his tenure. He left RC around longer than he should and then he replaces him with a Clemson culture guy with barely any experience.

If you are a big time OL recruit what would you think regarding Clemsons OL development history and current coaching?

Dabo is stubborn and it costs him. He wants show everyone he can do it his way.

The offense Clemson runs isn't necessarily conducive to getting the type of lineman that schools like Alabama and Georgia have recruited in years past. It's not really just Dabo being stubborn.

A good friend of min is an elite Oline coach at another program., and he said Dabo would not even take his calls when the job came up.

Coach Swinney could’ve hired a reputable offensive coordinator like Ralph Friedgen, but he hired Chad Morris. Coach Swinney could’ve hired a reputable replacement for CM, but he replaced him with J. Scott and Tony Elliott.

May 13, 2022, 8:37 PM [ in reply to Re: Dabo could have hired a reputable OL coach ]

The OL has been lackluster during the majority of his tenure. OL don’t get better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And yet he’s been a fixture in the CFP with two titles ...

May 13, 2022, 8:56 PM

And he’s done all that with your “lackluster” OL ...

You have to be a special kind of brain dead to keep pushing all this stuff before it even happens.

In 2-3 years if Clemson sucks come back and say you told us so.

For now you just sound like a jealous SCAR fan.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Almost every regular season game we have lost in the last 10 years

May 14, 2022, 12:56 AM

Can be directly attributed to poor play by the OL.

The single weakest position at Clemson since the Danny Ford era has been the OL.

With a decent not dominant but just above average OL Clemson would be unstoppable. We would be in the championship game almost every year.

The fact that you people can’t see serious issues staring you in the face never ceases to amaze.

There are six or eight programs around the country that every year even when as a team they suck they put offensive line players into the NFL. Boston College, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M, and a handful of others. Even when they suck they have a really good OL. That’s because of coaching. This has been our weakness, our Achilles’ heel, and Dabo has done nothing to fix it.

We wouldn’t need a superstar quarterback to win championships if we had an above average OL.

This is a perfect example of where we could get almost any coach in the country, but Dabo refuses. This is a perfect example of where the portal would help our program, but Dabo refuses.

If you truly love Clemson and Clemson football you would want us to have the best coach at every position. The best players at every position. We have the highest paid coaching staff in the country. But it has significant weaknesses. Primarily the OL. It’s the biggest weakness on our team every year!

Any business any team any organization that had a blatantly weak point for a decade would go out and fix that problem. It’s a fiduciary duty. Fans like you are not helping the program with your blind loyalty to Dabo. He’s not Jesus. He’s not perfect. Everyone deserves constructive criticism. Everyone has Blindspot‘s and weaknesses.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And yet, what I said still totally applies ...

May 14, 2022, 3:19 AM

Can’t believe you actually took the time to write all of that.

Are you kidding? That has to be the most tone deaf bunch of BS I’ve ever read.

We have actually won TWO national titles and have been a fixture in the CFP. Who cares if you feel the OL was inferior while all that GREAT STUFF was happening.

Instead of worrying about what might have been or what could be, try concentrating on the GREAT THINGS that actually happened.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No. People like you are tone deaf.

May 16, 2022, 2:43 AM

1. We could’ve won more with a better OL.
2. We won in spite of our bad OL not because of it.
3. The game has changed in the last three years. Wake up!
4. Look at all of the OL players predicted to come to Clemson over the last couple of years that end up going somewhere else. Including to the teams I mentioned.

May 16, 2022, 2:18 PM [ in reply to Almost every regular season game we have lost in the last 10 years ]

I do agree with you and the OP that the Offensive Line has been our position area with the greatest opportunity to improve. I've posted on this several times, in fact.

As for Coach being stubborn, he may be. I can understand that perspective. Frankly though, just in my opinion, he can be as stubborn as he wants because so far its worked pretty good. Dabo also strikes me as the guy that has no problem admitting fault when it's blatant and necessary to address.

All that said, I do disagree where you said Dabo has done nothing to improve the OL. I also understand the comment could also be a bit of a hyperbole.

This stuff irritates me too, especially because I do agree the OL has cost us several games we should have won (or gotten closer in our loss). BUT-we do know [Dabo is] a perfectionist. So while I have not personally observed any visible signs of improvement on the OL the last couple years, I am positive he is working on it. Heck for all I know it drives him mad, but he is always looking at a bigger picture with lots of info we are not privy to.

Obviously he can't come out and bash RC or Austin, that would be terrible for OL recruiting (which we do need some better results with players panning out).

Do I wish we hired a more established/proven OL coach and developer? Yes, I do personally. I wanted the splash and some sense that things immediately were getting better. But again, I'll have to trust Coach since he knows more than I ever will (and its his job which he has had lots of success).

I think we all want the best program we can be, with all the best players at all the positions. Critical analysis is never a bad thing (nor an O-Line that can block and keep our QB clean).

Until we see what Coach Austin can or cannot do, I think it's imperative we support him and the O-line. It may take some time, and it may suck, but I do think Coach knows best (more often than not).

How did Travis ETN‘s last year go? Pretty sure it would’ve gone far better with even a mediocre OL.

How did last year go? You think we would’ve had more success with a better OL? Little bit better OL and we could’ve run the ball and been 13–0 and in the playoffs again.

I appreciate what Dabo has done. But We could’ve been much better, especially the last few years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And his way has worked. Proof is in the record. Coach Dabo will make it happen. Remember “ the y don’t want little old Clemson beating the Big names” Danny proved that in the 70s early 80s.

I’ll respectfully point out that often an executive will promote someone he personally knows above those with seemingly more impressive credentials. Realize the importance of that knowledge.

I believe Dabo’s strength is that he knows the people associated with the program well. He knows players at Clemson camps to past players. Remember how he recognized Grady Jarrett’s talent when few did. He often has a young relative on the team, giving him the mood of the team, I imagine. Knowing someone personally, watching them through challenges as a player or lower-level coach, is tremendously valuable in predicting their performance in an important position. Foreseeing leadership ability in a coach of any kind is a factor not to overlook.

You CANNOT be a Clemson fan. With ALL of the success that this program has ENJOYED. You have the gall to be critical of coaches. Pls negate yourself to another fan base. May I suggest the Clucks. Then you can be a reputable fan for them.

Seriously?

Other than Jesus everyone has things that can be better that they can improve. Dabo and Clemson‘s football program is far from perfect.

I’ll promise you there are a lot of Alabama fans that criticize Nick Saban. I’d be willing to bet you have criticized him. And he’s considered the greatest football coach in college football history.

I think Bobby Bowden is because he did not have the benefit of the BCS or the college football playoff that we have now because he would be easily the head coach with the most national championships.

Clearly that stubborn Dabo has done it his way with two national titles.

I almost wish I’d never found this site sometimes. Never have I ever seen so many whiners and ingrates. Bring back Tommy Bowden and his average records
