He is trying to win a Natty. Dabo has a couple and now is taking care of friends, sons of friends, ex-players and relatives instead of a killer winning attitude. $11m/year for a while, why not?

Maybe Brent is serving better than if he recruited some high maintenance 5 star from high school. Maybe the transfers actually are thankful.

Amen JK, this whole transfer portal is the devil stuff is ridiculous. There are many good ways of using the portal to fill temporary gaps in the roster. Recruits don’t always pan out and most coaches like to fill the gaps so they do better than 9-3.

Transfer portal aside I think Venables is focused on winning his football games and not so much on surrounding himself with people he cares about. I think Dabo has taken his eyes off the prize. This isn't how you run a business.

He went on and on about what great people we have, and said that when you have the right people everything else takes care of itself.
He places too much credit on our culture and having good guys around, and too little on making sure those people are also really great at what they do.
I believe it’s possible to have both, but you can’t neglect the football knowledge and experience piece. Unfortunately, Dabo has.

It's possible to care a lot about all of the players on your roster irrespective of how the came to be on your roster. If you're someone who believes coach V is like Dabo and is trying to better young men's lives; then why would you also think that all coaches who engage with the portal are only looking to take advantage of young men?

The Oklahoma situation is the example that Dabo uses when talking about when using the portal would be necessary.
It is irrelevant to Clemson’s situation. A bunch of players went in the Portal when Riley left. Oklahoma had to go into the portal to replace then. Many of the replacements only had one year of eligibility left. Couple that with losing another double digit group to the portal last year and you can’t field a team without going into the portal.
When Dabo decides to hang it up at Ckemson, we will be the biggest portal team in football. We will immediately lose 15-20 kids to the portal. Not our 2 and 3s on the depth chart but half of the 15-20 will be starters. Those kids came to Clemson to play for Dabo. For a couple of years Clemson will be more like todays Colorado approach than todays Clemson approach with respect to the portal.

Same Number of portal losses this year as Jawja and O310 state. The 16 transfers he brought in this year is steady state not a function of the coaching change. Coach has adapted to the current college operating model; Dabo has not.

Or is it possible that people like you (not gonna call YOU a name) misunderstood the nature of my post.
I overestimated the ability of Tnet to grasp nuance so let me spell it out.
Coach V is a good man who cares about his players and seeks to grow them as people and not just players. The fact that he gets some of those players from the portal is irrelevant towards that goal and should not impact how we think of him. Dabo could still do all of the great things he does for our guys even if some of our guys come from the portal.

doesn't mean that use of the transfer portal is inherently wrong. As long as he's clear with everyone he recruits that he's active both in high school and in the transfer portal, and that he isn't promising them that he won't recruit a senior over them if it will make an immediate impact...and as long as, whenever they join his program, he invests in them beyond just "how can I use you to win more games?", then absolutely, I still respect him and think he's in it for the right reasons.

Brent is his own man. He's the head coach and it's his decision. I still am grateful to Brent for building a championship defense at Clemson. Wish him nothing but luck unless he plays us. Also hope he dominates the SEC his first year.

The two years he's been there he is 16-10. Dabo is 20-7. Doesn't seem like the portal made a big difference either way.

He just signed a new contract a few months ago that runs through the 2029 season. He's not going to be fired this year. His buyout would be ridiculous.

I live in Oklahoma, and I can tell you, if he doesn't win 10 he at least will be on a very very hot seat. Most people I talk to are not happy with him.
