Who is/was our best recruit in the modern era?

The Dabo era that is.

Class of ‘71. Went through “rat season” and glad I did.

No way to judge. So many would have been very, very good but not great if they

true. 4 and 16 did some great things but they needed w/r and rb. Spiller was the one who got Dabo on the map recruiting wise. Some great D guys like Wilkins.

Deshaun lit up bama with an oline that only had one nfl guy on it and he was a freshman (hearn). He also only had renfrow (freshman), artavis scott, and charone peak to throw to.

Good qbs dont need amazing wr's to perform well.

What about Gallman, Mike Williams, Leggett?***

Agree on the TB10. Oregon, tOSU, Clemson, VT to choose from.. can't find the long article discussing but there is a great write up somewhere I read about the sincerity of pitch from Dabo.

Trevor #1 slightly over DW..

8

Aug 15, 2024, 10:20 AM

because he was a higher profile prospect coming out of hs plus he won the CFP as a true freshman. Nevermind the modern era, the history of the program... those 2 QBs are by far the best recruits in the history of the program. You can suggest someone else but you'll still be wrong.

I'll go with either of these 2 as greatest : DW4 or TL16

CJ Spiller has to be mentioned in discussion along with Sammy Watkins, Tajh Boyd, Nuk, Christain, Dex.

Sammy Watkins, because if we did not get him we might not be where we are now. Other than Sammy, obviously Trevor is the best because you cannot be better than #1 in the draft.

Christian Wilkins.

Started as a true FR at DT and played great. Then started each of the rest of his time at Clemson, played great.

Moved to starting DE (I get mixed up whether in 2016 or 2017) due to depth / ready-to-play starter quality issues at DE. CW42 played tremendously despite being ‘out of position.’

Never missed time due to injury.

Could have gone pro after Jr year as high draft pick, but stayed for Sr year.

He was on all three teams that played in national championship game; we won two of those. We were in CFP each of his 4 years with us.

xxxxxxxxx

Mitch Hyatt is my number two all time great if the Dabo era.

Mitch started at LT each of his four years with us, including true FR year. He won the Jacob’s Blocking Trophy twice. He played tremendous football his entire time with us at arguably the most important OL position … especially so for a pass heavy offense with a right handed QB.

We had no other ready-to-go LT in 2015 after preseason projected starter Isiah Battle got, uh, lost in the weeds. Mitch played tremendously all season; we’d have never gotten to the playoffs any of the 2015, 2016, or 2017 seasons without him.

To my recollection, never got hurt.

CJ Spiller.

Launched Dabo's career as a master recruiter and program builder. Him showing the loyalty he did and sticking around for the 2009 season, our first ever ACC division winning season and Dabo's first as permanent head coach, helped further propel Dabo's mystique and staying power. IMO as highly rated a recruit as he was, at his position, and the blue bloods at the time that Dabo had to overcome - for him to commit, stick around, and have the success he had here really raised the bar in terms of what Clemson was capable of under Swinney. And the rest is history.

Why no love for ETN? I know he was an under the radar as a late pickup, but he arguably has some of the best career stats for a running back in college football.

I thought about TE9.

But, if I understood the question right, the OP was referring to big time name "coming in"! TE9 made a big name for himself after he arrived.

I took it as just a recruit who chose Clemson and contributed mightily. Hence, you see Boyd offered up. He certainly wasn’t a 5* with tons of hype before he arrived, so I’d put TE9 in the same category.

Here's a curveball but hear me out. Tahj Boyd. Tahj set the mold for what a Clemson QB should be under Dabo and took the program to the next level allowing Deshaun and Trevor to take the team to nattys. I bet Dabo would agree.

Christian Wilkins

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My choices (can't narrow it down and in no particular order):

1

Aug 16, 2024, 8:16 AM

1. Christian Wilkins - the heart and soul of the team during his tenure; great leader
2. Tahj Boyd- QB we needed at the right time
3. Deshaun Watson/Trevor Lawrence - back-to-back generational QBs and leaders
4. Hunter Renfrow - humble leader and dependable work horse
5. Travis Etienne/CJ Spiller/James Davis - humble leaders and dependable work horses
