What do you attribute to the rise in autism? Now approximately 1:35 kids.

Are you confident that these people did not exist? Or is it possible these kids/individuals were kept out of the public because of both shame/embarrassment, and because previously resources did not exist to help them in public schools.

I remember some time back, a family member, an old timer telling me “back in the day your child would have gotten it beaten out of him.”

Old timers attributed autism, adhd and other behavioral issues to the child needing ### beatings.

Autism is better diagnosed now than it was just a few years ago.

Just as other issues are better diagnosed now. Some people can’t understand that.

1 in 35 kids is a little crazy. Being able to recognize and diagnose certainly attributed to the increase in autism rates. That being said, I don’t know of any other disability that affects so many children.
I certainly think our diet is not good and the amount of harmful ingredients in most foods is unhealthy. Along with air quality, microplastics, too much fluoride in water and staring at screens all day, we have plenty of negative factors affecting our health. Wether those contribute to a rise in autism, I don’t know.

Yeah I haven’t seen anything that proves a correlation between vaccines and autism rates.
I do think vaccines can be harmful. Especially if given too young. Both of my children are vaxxed. We don’t do the flu or Covid shots though.

I was not talking about your responses to Jimmy, my reply was to the OP as the time stamps on the posts indicate. As usual, you Trumpers totally miss the point. So lets review, late last week you submit an OP talking about Gus being a beta and your "theories" about autism. Your OP was roundly denounced by many at that time as being clueless and in poor taste(which it totally was). You then wait a few days and post an OP that says "Calling the kid beta was wrong" in which you kinda apologize and then state "I will be taking a break. You all are going insane" which reinforced the "kinda apology" while also still blaming the parents for autistic children(totally ridiculous). Now you return a few days later with this gem of an OP. Hence my question as a "normal human" .... WTFugg? You have taken a beating on this issue and yet you come back for more even when you said "I will be taking a break". Are you a non-autistic man of your word .... or not? Simple!

Honestly, humans have spent the better part of a century cheating mother nature, and honestly winning, for the most part.

Very few people realize that the reason humans lived (on AVERAGE) like 28-30 years forever, until the past century, has very little to do with keeping people alive longer, but mostly from preventing kids from dying. All of medical science has contributed to adults living perhaps 10 years longer, into old age. The big boost in average life expectancy is children NOT DYING, and this is directly due to vaccines stopping polio, mumps, rubella, measles, smallpox, tetanus, and many other childhood killers.

500 years ago, or 250 years ago, if you made it to your 20th birthday, your odds of living to 60yo is similar to today. BUT, your odds were literally 50/50 of making it to 20yo. This is why people had 6, 8, 10+ kids. They expected half to die before adulthood. Today no one expects children to die. We think they're the healthier than adults, and that's just not the case historically. And this is why they are targeted for vaccines, because keeping them alive has the greatest impact on life expectancy.

Over time, generations, 50-100 years, this leads to an older and older overall population, as the need to have kids shrinks, and people live longer and most make it to adulthood. And we're at that point where population will decline in the future as the older people die off, and very few adults are having children on the same scale as in the past, as odds are now far greater they will reach adulthood themselves.

Autism is just an outgrowth of this. We have thrown a stick in the spokes of the wheels of natural selection for a very long time now. It's likely a once rare condition that has become more pronounced as kids with it were probably selected in the past to die with it more frequently, before vaccines and modern healthcare. Some disease likely selected for autistic children in the past. Could have been measles, mumps, smallpox, no one knows because those diseases don't exist in any real numbers today. And like was said earlier, we may have just gotten better at detecting and diagnosing it.

I think a lot of what you have said is very true

5

Aug 28, 2024, 5:26 PM

That said, I think that diagnosing and awareness of the issue has dramatically increased. We have more data now, and ability to share it. We dont have files in a cabiet we have online health records that can be accessed by providers, teachers, and parents, etc. My mother was a teacher in one of those BHE/D classrooms in the 90s, 2000s, and later. And the class size was about 10~15 for a middle school of about 800-900 kids. Unfortunately, a lot of these kids that were in those classes came from low income situations where their families could not provide a better solution for them. It was what was available to mostly low income parents that battled these challenges. Also, the kids assigned to that class had a lot of the physical indicators that were more easily diagnosed/ spotted.

I am currently trying to help my son who is learning to work with his mental health challenge. I have spent 4 hours just this week talking to insurance providers and care teams to help make sure the resources are in place to help him. My wife has spent another 6~8 hours just this week working with his care team at school and professional healthcare providers. This did not exist when my mother started her teaching career. It did get more involved during later part of her 30 years in the school system. I think this is a good thing because there are a lot of kids that fall on the spectrum, and their struggles are not so easily recognized. But the more data is collected, the easier it is to spot and to start trying to get involved and help. But if I had to guess, if my son went to middle school in the early 90s, he would have suffered through in school suspension before being expelled. He would not have been placed in my mothers class. He scored to high on all of the tests (95% ). No physical visible genetic traits. He does not present those things. But there are physical movements, tendencies and traits that once you know what to look for, you start to really see. But to continue on with the example of if my son was raised 30 years ago, I likely would have intervened right before explosion and found an alternate home school option. There would have been even more frustration inside the family because of the lack of info regarding "why cant my kid get it". I dont understand what we are doing wrong/ etc. But my family would have tried to handle it internally as best we could because we would have the financial resource to do it (no need for mom to work). Thats not as easy today.

So with more knowledge of the topic, a increase in pressure from parents to keep their kids in the school system for financial reasons, the number of kids has gone up. I think the kids have always been there. It just comes down to we know more now than we did back then. I think we also as a society tolerate it more now than we did back then. Speaking of those mortality rates, I cant imagine how many kids who suffered from a minor mental issue were beaten to death by their parents for discipline issues. A best seller book, I think it was little house on the parie, there was a chapter in that story that told about a neighbor's kids that was just out right defiant. The father in the book alluded that if he was my kid, I would wear his but out to get him in line. I wonder how many of those kids were just struggling with the fact that they dont have the same brain filters that 90% of us have. They dont mean to be rude. Its just the way their brain is wired to communicate.

Anyway, I just wanted to contribute to the conversation. I know I have a lot to learn. I am hopeful that others that read take a second to take in some info. It may help you have some understanding if you are on the outside looking in at a situation that involves mental health issues.

Of course life expectancy in Africa is below 60yo. And that's mostly, again, from children dying at far higher numbers.

Actually, there has been studies on it but now most lean towards autistic kids use smartphones excessively to make up for their deficit in social communication. In other words, the screen time isn’t causing the autism.

And having an autistic son who was diagnosed LONG before he ever had cell phone or tablet access, this is what I believe. He is now hooked on his cell phone but it’s how he communicates more effectively.

Re: Cata and Jimmy

1

Aug 28, 2024, 7:30 PM [ in reply to Re: Cata and Jimmy ]

I am no expert but I can understand why some draw a conclusion. If you watched my son and how he interacts with you when he is on a device, we have seen outburst that would make crack addict going through a withdraw seem tame. Some kids with other forms of Autism no issue.

What is interesting though is that for some kids, say with the hyper focus type ADHD challenge, screen information is just firing at a faster rate which is calming for them from a sensory point of view. My son struggles with this. transitioning Especially from screens is hard. But it’s also the interface that causes him the most enjoyment. It’s like us watching our favorite team about to win a championship. 5 seconds to go and the wife turns the tv off, and you don’t have playback. $&#%{. We learn how to mature to where we don’t kill each other. That filter is just not there for some kids. And rage is going to always be the outcome.

It’s been one of the harder things we work with my son in. we put limits on screen time to help him and trying to teach him how to manage. He might be one of the few kids that does not have a cell phone at school.

I think screen time in regards to social media is more concerning in regards to depression and possible bullying. This has been hard for me to take in. I never experienced a lot of bullying growing up. my daughter sees it a lot. And she is a social butterfly. But girls can be down right mean and cruel to each other. Boys can to, but girls take it to another level.

Of course autism has existed before screen time. But the full spectrum of ASD is not understood. Researchers are looking at possible contributing factors in the rise of cases. Screen time in early development has been considered as a possible contributor. No one is saying it is THE cause. It’s not a crack pot theory. What in the last 50 years has changed that would have dramatically increased the diagnosis in the 1970s, and a continually increasing trend?

Yes, diagnosis has improved, genetics plays a role but what about the parents that have an autistic child with no genetic markers? I don't believe it's vaccines and it's not alcohol.

Something is causing the autistic rate to increase over 5000% since the 1970s:

0.5/1000 in 1970s
1/1000 in 1980s
1.9/1000 in 1999
7.4/1000 in 2008
14.7/1000 in 2017
22.7/1000 in 2021
27.8/1000 in 2023

Being the grandfather of a functioning autistic grandson, currently in college, I still have a lot of questions and have my suspicions but will reserve my opinion until more studies are done.

This would Back-up Jimmy's assertion that we are getting better, or lowering standards as mentioned by another for a positive diagnosis, among many other things. If it were something environmental, I would not expect a slow climb, but a spike. And you could say that was between '99 and 2008 something happened?. Not saying there isn't a correlation, but we did not start watching TV in the 2000's. And this does not refute or prove anything.

The Maccarana song caused Autism, it correlates with your data. it got stuck inside people's heads and caused this awful affliction. Until Tardawg can provide a study telling us this is not the case, then it is true.

If you make a claim, YOU are responsible for proving it when challenged. This is simple logic taught in schools. You know this.

I don't buy that screen time causes autism either. I believe it can possibly trigger symptoms similar to autism that can be corrected and/or possibly be a catalyst to accelerate symptoms for a child already with autism, but not cause it. I ain't buying the Maccarena either.

We likely haven't seen that much of an increase but have gotten better at diagnosing. Imagine how our society treated most autism cases in the 1950s or how they were dismissed. The medical community continues to improve and diagnose cases.

But if you want me to just make an unfounded guess, I would say taking a hard look at the food we ingest today could be a factor.

Please tell me you're not a "vaccines cause autism" person, although that would be on-brand.

I mean, Jesus, people, the guy who first came up with that intentionally fabricated his study in 1998. It was quickly debunked. Idiot celebrities like Jenny McCarthy helped keep the myth alive in the 2000s, and then she would later come back and say her kid wasn't actually autistic.

It's not a shocker given how poorly many people's critical thinking skills are. They think their kid develops autism after their shots, but they fail to realize that this is the age autism is usually diagnosed.

It would be like doing a shot of whiskey cures the common cold just because your symptoms just happened to go away the next day.

That's not how things work, and it's a shame our doctors and medical community have to battle such foolishness.

Vaccines do not cause autism. Period. And not one of you--not a single one of you--can provide a medical expert or scientist who can refute that. You'll instead find some idiot soccer mom with a blog who pretends she knows #### she doesn't.

Doctors aren't that good to increase diagnosis 1000% in 50 years. Show me the link that says Doctors diagnosis has identified plus 1000% dianosis since the 1970s and I'll admit I'm wrong. While your at it, tell us why the U.S. rate of autism is double the U.K., Canada and Australia since the 1970s?

"Doctors aren't that good to increase diagnosis 1000% in 50 years" is not a statement that can or should be taken as a given.
