He's only about 15-16. You'd obviously prefer someone with a harder fastball, but there's a lot of pitchers in college baseball that make you look silly and their gas is 85-86. He's a lefty so he's probably one of those "crafty lefties" like a Tom Glavine, Mark Buerhle, Cliff Lee, etc.

Has anyone seen this kid pitch? He's a lefty but he must be

throwing some nasty stuff if he tops out at 78 and still got Clemson's attention.
Possibly at 6' and 150lbs he's seen as having plenty of time to grow and develop a little velocity..

Ryan is a good friend of mine, and he's the real deal. Got some serious talent and will only get better these next two years! Also a great kid, very solid character. Good pickup for the tigers!

I love the scouting report on him.
He has command of his fastball to the arm side of the plate with good movement down & away.
He throws his change up from the same slot, with the same arm action, and the same angle of movement, only the change will die at the plate. But it will look like his fastball.
His has good balance & a repeatable delivery, but it seems as though he throws a lot of body motion & arm action at you which is very annoying for a hitter. He brings his leg up high & finishes with his arm way out front. This creates added deception for a hitter.
It also says that his slider is cutter like. That means it's harder, flatter, & more difficult to pick up than a normal slider because you can't see the dot spin as well from a traditional slider.
What all of this means is that all of his pitches look the same coming out of his hand.
Because he has good balance & a repeatable motion he probably starts all of his pitches just slightly to the arm side of the middle of the plate, and all he does is change the grip & hand angle depending on what pitch he throws.
He can live outside & when hitters lean out he can bust them in & jam them with his cutter/slider.
He's a feel pitcher, & if he can command his changeup he will drive hitters crazy, because if you can throw 1 of 3 pitches for strike 1 you can get ahead while also keeping hitters guessing.
You're typically only going to face hitters 3 times a game, 4 at most, & if hitters never know what to expect it's hard for them to get your timing like it would be for a more traditional pitcher.
He will probably have to develop a wind up because he's not really what you want coming out of the bullpen because he doesn't have swing & miss stuff, but if he matures & develops he's the kind of guy you love to have as a Saturday starter sandwiched in between two plus arms.
The your best arm Friday night & the other team has to mentally prepare for that, then have to turn around & be patient against a guy like this?... very annoying
And if by chance you get to Omaha guys like this thrive in that ballpark.
??
Go Tigers!
