The Death Penalty should only be for murders that are pre-meditated,
a little harsh for this kind of accident that was not intentional.
Maybe 10 to 20yrs in prison would do the trick.

Maybe life imprison, but no one will get death penalty with DUI or driving what ever.

You have to intentionally wanted to kill to be given anything even close to that

It isn't what is liberal or harsher opinion. It is fact...

The fact is that God's penalty will be more than anything we can come up with, along with his mercy. There is nothing we can do, and no penalty that we can inflict, that will ever bring back those two lives. There is also no mention of whether this guy has a family, who will now lose for his stupidity.

Saw the most ignorant people this 4th of July weekend b***h & moan about an increase in presence of DNR on the water going after BUIs. “They just want to make a dollar off of tickets” and “There are more serious issues for them to be dealing with than a potentially drunk boater” was the general consensus of the complainers.

There’s a young couple who had their lives ahead of them now dead because of drunk boating. How much more of a serious issue can you get? Makes me sick.

Perhaps ironically, DNR was in the process of getting the driver who caused the wreck to stop his boat because he didn't have all his lights working when he ran into the back of the other boat (which did have all its lights working).

For every boater or driver that ends up killing or maiming someone while intoxicated, there are multiple drivers or boaters that were intoxicated and fortunately didn't injure or kill anyone.

The same is true for those arrested for BUI or DUI. Multiple people were boating or driving while intoxicated and managed to avoid being pulled over.

The boater who killed these 2 people made a choice that many others make every day and get away with it.

The choice to drive or operate a boat after drinking is just as selfish and immoral for those who don't get arrested or kill or maim anyone. There is no moral difference. If you engage in this behavior, you are no better than this man who killed these people, just lucky so far.

Laws need to be changed to drastically increase the penalty for driving or boating under the influence, so that there is a major disincentive to engage in this reckless behavior.

A mandatory 30 day jail sentence for BUI/DUI, spending that 30 days with some very unsavory characters, would do a lot to curtail this nonsense that leads to carnage and a wake of destruction that follows the survivors of the dead and the one responsible for the senseless deaths.

I've witnessed first hand what the killing of my brother in law and maiming of my sister in law, done at the hands of a drunk boater, has done. That boater is in prison and that surely has been destructive for him, his wife and family as well.

The status quo is not working. There is not a sufficient deterrent in place to curb driving or operating a boat while drinking.

How many impaired drivers do you think leave Death Valley after a football game?

You're right.

You're exactly right, I just don't know what to do about it.

I think most people who drive excessively dangerously on the road, for example, simply haven't experienced a preventable tragedy. In my experience (in insurance & medicine), tragedy like that changes people's behavior pretty much every single time. DUI's, though, don't always do it. Tickets don't often do it, either.

There was inescapably more enforcement on the lakes all weekend, for sure, & I think that serves an absolutely crucial role, plus you're not wrong about people leaving Death Valley past the legal limit, I just don't know what we can do about any of it other than to discourage it in the people we know & love, & that sucks too because it's obviously not enough.

I like the idea of jail time in a way, I'm just not sure it would work (or be enforceable) either, but maybe in conjunction with meeting families like yours who have lost someone & recognizing the real consequences but without experiencing their own tragedy would also help tremendously.

Sadly though, I think an actual tragedy is often the only thing that will change most of the worst behavior.

You kill a person because you are a useless drunk, you should be hanged and then tried for murder. If found innocent, ooops. About as much punishment as was given to the person or persons murdered who were innocent. I have no use for stupid irresponsible people who break the laws that end up killing or maiming others.

So if someone falsely identified you as a hit and run, fatality causing DUI driver, because you happened to drive the same make and model -- you would be okay with being hung without due process? you would be okay with your wife, mother, children, being summarily executed by the government in the case of a mistaken identification?

To be fair, there's almost no information.

They could have been on a dock at a family home, for all we know, or swimming near it, or fishing.

At 2 AM, yes, it's not exactly uncommon for people to be drinking if they're up so late (especially on a holiday weekend), albeit I have several friends who don't drink at all & are often our designated driver for events like concerts.

Tired of reading, seeing and hearing how some ignorant drunk got behind the wheel and wiped out a family or killed innocent ppl minding and living their own lives. I read above that the deathe penalty was too harsh and should be reserved for those perpetrating in premeditated murder. Well this guy knowing drank, knowing got behind the wheel drunk and knowing understood the consequences of those actions. That's as premeditated as it gets in my eyes. Also letting drunks who drink and drive off with slaps on the wrist only exacerbates the situation. You want to stop it them actually punish those that ruin lives. If these ppl understand they could be terminated by the state I'd have to think that would cut down on these incidents. Then again I'm not a prison is for reform guys either. If you can't live in society without breaking our laws then you shouldn't partake in our society.

The young male victim was the grandson of a childhood friend, and the great-nephew of a close friend. It appears as though he was truly an "All American" kind of guy, who had already begun a career as some form of construction engineer. I do not know anything about the female victim, other than the fact that if she was the girlfriend of the guy, and a Clemson grad, then she was too valuable to lose, also. What a shame that two very promising young folks, the kind that we need in this country right now, have departed, and a felony-committing drunk was left behind!! TOO sad!! R/TLM
