A tribute to my Dad

My Dad was a Wofford graduate from Union County, SC, but he was the man who made me a Tiger fan. His younger brother Rob graduated from Clemson in engineering, and the Duncans have always been Clemson people. Dad loved Danny Ford, and got to enjoy those great years. He would have so enjoyed seeing the heights that Dabo has taken our Tigers to. As we stand on the verge of another season, I would dearly love to be talking with him about our vaunted Tigers’ football prospects in the months to come.
30 years ago today (September 3, 1992) my father died. I’ve missed him every day for almost half my life now. I love you, Dad.
In the dedication of my PhD Thesis, I wrote:
“In Memoriam J. Ligon Duncan, Jr. (1925-1992) Eighth-generation Southern Presbyterian, Ruling Elder, Kind and Beloved Father, Follower of Christ”
To my family, I wrote: “Father did not live to see the end of this toil, and I for one live now with a certain awkward loneliness in this world, but his body awaits the resurrection in the red soil of South Carolina and his soul rejoices even now in the presence of the Savior. We all await the reunion.”
Tell your Dads that you love them today. And, Go Tigers!

My Dad has always been my Hero. All of my life my goal was to become the best man I could be following the lessons in life my Dad has taught me. At age 88 he is still getting around very well. We enjoy shooting together. He still can out shoot me.
Thank you for such a great post!

Football seasons every year bring back so many memories of high school Friday nights and college Saturdays. Miss him very much! I know how you feel! Thanks for reminding me of all the great times we had together.

Beautiful tribute to your dad. My dad taught me everything I know about football when I was in high school in the late 60s. As a majorette, I was allowed to not sit with the band in the second half, so off I went to sit with Dad who explained all the plays and nuances to me. He also occasionally took me to Clemson games which I dearly loved. My husband loves that I love football so much, but I especially love my Clemson Tigers! All thanks to Dad.

Graduated from Clemson in 1947. He too was a southern Presbyterian, was part of the start of the PCA. I've been going to Clemson game since I was a kid because we always had season tickets. I continue that tradition. But think about my dad all the time he loved this time of year!

Thanks for posting. Those of us who were blessed with great dads should never forget how much they impacted our lives.
My dad died on December 26, 1998. He still impacts my life everyday.

father's eyes right now and attempt to convey to him the impact he has had on my life, and how much I love and miss him. Our relationship wasn't always great, certainly not perfect, as he was hard-headed and I was a rebellious punk, but we grew extremely close in his later years, and I have thought about him almost every day since he passed 16 years ago, and realized what a great father he was, and how much I really learned from him about how to be a good father and a good person.

I didn't really know much about my dad, he was a long distance truck driver that was on the road most of my 9 years of life before he died of a massive heart attack. But I feel lonely awkwardness of having a dad, but not knowing or remembering very much about him. The two most important things to me that I've learned about him through the years that makes me like him in some ways, and that was he hated liars, and laziness. I won't call it hate that I feel for those types, but as soon as I learn that someone is that way, I just never have any dealing with them what so ever!!! But I do hope to meet him in heaven, and tell him how much I missed him, and loved him!!!
